Bob Iger & Willow Bay Buy L.A.’s Angel City Football Club

Willow Bay and her husband, Disney CEO Bob Iger, have made a groundbreaking move in women’s sports. The power couple has acquired a controlling stake in Los Angeles’ Angel City Football Club, propelling the team to new heights.

Willow Bay, dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, and her husband, Disney CEO Bob Iger, are poised to become the new controlling owners of Angel City FC. The deal, which values the team at a record-breaking $250 million, is expected to close soon. With an additional $50 million investment from the couple, Angel City FC solidifies its position as the world’s most valuable women’s sports franchise. News of the Igers’ impending acquisition first surfaced earlier this month.

Bay will take the reins as the sole decision-maker on the Angel City FC board and will also serve as the controlling owner for NWSL purposes. She will represent the team on the NWSL board of governors. The deal is contingent upon standard closing procedures, including NWSL approval. With unanimous backing from the ACFC board, the transaction is expected to finalize within the next two months.

Bay said, “As fans and friends of ACFC, we are thrilled to join this team as owners at this historic moment in sports. ACFC and these incredible athletes have already had a tremendous impact on the NWSL, women’s soccer, and the Los Angeles community. With this investment of resources and capital, we hope to accelerate the growth of the club and the NWSL. Working with the team and board, and the incredible community of ACFC fans, we are committed to advancing the club’s mission of driving equity on and off the field.”

The additional $50 million investment from Bay and Iger will fuel Angel City FC’s mission to be a leading-edge organization both on and off the field. This infusion of capital will support the team’s commitment to its community-focused and equitable foundation.

In a collective statement, the ACFC board of directors said: “Willow and Bob bring unparalleled operational experience, expertise, and passion to ACFC and to the NWSL. They’re lifelong sports fans who have been supporters of ACFC since the team’s founding. They are deeply committed to the Los Angeles community, having been residents, leaders and philanthropists in the city for almost three decades and have a long track record of dedicating their time and resources to support local Los Angeles organizations. We know they are the right partners to lead us into this new era — they are committed to further strengthening ACFC’s position as a preeminent organization and brand in women’s sports and to championing the team’s broader mission, including the advancement of equity for athletes and women-founded businesses. With their leadership, we will continue to harness the industry’s momentum and build on ACFC’s strong foundation of fan and community support.”

Sporting a classic ice cream truck look, the bucket is predominantly blue on the bottom, cream in the middle, and pink on top.

The truck’s face features two gray headlights and a windshield sticker of Mickey driving. A colossal vanilla ice cream cone tops off the design.

Lift the truck’s top to uncover a handy ice cream bowl. Included sundaes come in special containers that fit perfectly inside, keeping things clean and convenient.

The driver’s side is another Mickey masterpiece! A sticker shows him behind the wheel, while two more below – an excited “Oh Boy!” and a triple-scoop ice cream cone – add to the fun. In the back window, Goofy, sporting a bowtie, playfully scoops strawberry ice cream into a bowl already filled with chocolate and vanilla. A striped awning shades him from the sun.

The pink top pops open to reveal an “Ice Cold & Refreshing” sticker, inviting you to indulge. Below Goofy, the truck proudly displays a “3 Pals Ice Cream” logo. Colorful sprinkles dance above the stylish black, white, and blue wheels, completing this sweet ride.

A vanilla ice cream cone spoon is tucked away in the truck’s cab. Plus, the truck comes with a removable blue strap adorned with sprinkles and beloved Disney characters.

The truck’s other side mirrors the blue bottom design, with Mickey once again taking the wheel. But this time, Donald Duck is the star of the back window, tipping his cap and proudly holding a colossal ice cream sundae topped with two chocolate chip cookies. A sticker behind him showcases the same dreamy dessert.

The pink top, identical to the other side, opens to reveal the “Ice Cold & Refreshing” message. Inside the back window, Chip and Dale emerge from tubs of vanilla and strawberry ice cream, while a third tub overflows with chocolate. Each lid, adorned with a white and red “Minnie Handmade Ice Cream” label and a cheerful yellow flower, adds a touch of charm. Below the window, another “Ice Cold & Refreshing” sticker sits above an eye-catching orange license plate.

You can find the ice cream truck bucket at Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor in Disneyland Park and Clarabelle’s Hand-Scooped Ice Cream in Disney California Adventure. It is $31.29 and includes your choice of triple-scoop sundae at time of purchase.

Disney Legend William “Sully” Sullivan Passes Away at 88

Disney Legend William “Sully” Sullivan, who dedicated 38 years to The Walt Disney Company and contributed significantly to Disney Parks in California and Florida, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, at his home in Windermere, Florida. He was 88 years old.

“Few people have contributed as much to Disney theme parks as Bill Sullivan,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences. “His personal connection with Walt Disney and his incredible career spanning multiple decades and several destinations helped pass along Disney heritage to generations of cast members and guests around the world.”

Born on April 18, 1936, in Fullerton, California, Sullivan initially pursued architecture and began his career in the aircraft industry. His path changed on Sunday, July 17, 1955, when he watched the opening ceremonies for Disneyland on ABC-TV. “The following Saturday I went down and applied for a job. Monday I quit Northrop Aircraft, and Tuesday I reported to work as a ticket-taker at the Jungle Cruise,” Sullivan recalled. He was 19 years old.

While working as a Jungle Cruise skipper, Sullivan met his future wife at Waltah Clarke’s Hawaiian Shop, located near the attraction. He progressed from ride operator to operations supervisor at Disneyland, gaining comprehensive knowledge of park operations. “I took a summer job, and I’ve been here ever since,” Sullivan said in an interview before his retirement.

Sullivan’s career included various notable assignments, such as serving on the operations team for the 1960 Winter Olympics in Northern California, where Walt Disney oversaw Pageantry, and assisting with the Disney-designed attractions at the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair.

“Walt was a really warm individual,” Sullivan fondly remembered. “He had a great sense of humor, and he loved people. He was an executive, but not what you perceive as an ‘executive.’ He was a real team guy.”

1920_WDAPL_2016_November_18_TP_0148_Corrected1-409x614-1

Sullivan also managed operations for several high-profile Disney film premieres, including Mary Poppins (1964) and The Happiest Millionaire (1967).

In 1968, Sullivan joined the project management team for the Walt Disney World Resort project near Orlando, Florida. He established the resort’s first security force and developed operational layouts for Main Street, U.S.A.; Fantasyland; and the Transportation and Ticket Center. He later helped set up the company’s first hotel division.

“I moved to Orlando in 1969 and moved the family here the following year,” Sullivan said. “We reached an agreement to manage the Hilton Inn South on International Drive with [Walt Disney World’s first hotel employee] John Curry. It gave us a base of operations to understand the hotel business because we didn’t know anything about it. We also tried our hands at operating laundry facilities and food purchasing. It was really a whole new world for us.”

1920_WDAPL_2016_November_18_TP_0228_R-600x400-1

By the time Walt Disney World opened on October 1, 1971, Sullivan was overseeing operations for Main Street, U.S.A.; Adventureland; and Liberty Square.

Sullivan later served as director of PICO (Project Installation and Coordination Office), coordinating the operational design and installation of equipment at EPCOT Center, and as director of EPCOT Center operations. In 1987, he was named vice president of Magic Kingdom Park, overseeing all aspects of park operations.

After contributing to the opening of Euro Disneyland (now Disneyland Paris) in 1992, Sullivan retired in 1993 after a 38-year career with Disney. “If I had to do it all over,” he said, “I’d do it all again tomorrow.”

1920_WDAPL_D00003_00192_am-600x400-1

Named a Disney Legend in 2005, Sullivan published a memoir in 2015 titled From Jungle Cruise Skipper to Disney Legend: 40 Years of Magical Memories at Disney.

Two windows on Main Street, U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom Park honor Sullivan’s contributions: one, above the Crystal Arts shop, lists him among the charter members of the “Windermere Fraternal Hall,” alongside fellow Walt Disney World opening team leaders Bob Allen, Pete Crimmings, Dick Evans, Bill Hoelscher, and Bob Matheison. The second, above the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor, references Sullivan’s love of hunting and fishing: “Sully’s Safaris & Guide Service / Chief Guide / Bill Sullivan.”

Sullivan is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jacqueline Sullivan; children Laurie (Jeffrey) Wallace, Elizabeth (Paul) Hoffman, Matt (Stacey) Sullivan, and Kathleen (Dave) Riordan; grandchildren Joe Coleman, Jessica (Eric) Gomez, Jake (Tara) Coleman, Briana (Jon Teasley) Hoffman, Kellan (Dahlia) Hoffman, Madeline Hoffman, Zachary Sullivan, Noah Sullivan, Matthew Sullivan, Luc Riordan, Nico Riordan, and Gabriel Riordan; and great-grandchildren Addison Coleman, Logan Coleman, Jackson Teasley, Piper Gomez, and Sadie Gomez; and sister Virginia Gass.

Disneyland Employees Rally for Fair Wages, Chant ‘Shut it Down’ Ahead of Strike Vote

On Disneyland’s 69th anniversary, over 14,000 Disney employees represented by four unions staged a protest outside the Anaheim theme park. The demonstration was a precursor to a planned strike vote, with workers demanding improved wages, enhanced safety measures, and other benefits during contract negotiations.

Union members rallied at the park’s entrance, voicing their concerns and seeking public support for their cause.

Union members amplified their voices using a sound system positioned outside the Disneyland security checkpoint. As guests entered and exited the theme park, they delivered speeches outlining their demands, according to the Orange County Register.

The protest continued on Harbor Boulevard, with union members voicing their demands through chants such as “If we don’t get it, shut it down.” Social media platforms saw several Disneyland visitors sharing videos of the rally.

The Master Services Council, representing 14,000 Disneyland employees across four unions, is set to conduct a strike authorization vote on Friday. Results from the vote are expected to be released by Saturday. The participating unions include Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Local 83, Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West, Teamsters Local 495, and United Food and Commercial Workers Local 324.

“With yesterday’s rally, we continue to be focused on the wellbeing of our guests and cast members. We remain committed to the upcoming meetings on July 22 – 23 and reaching an agreement with Master Services that focuses on what matters most to cast members, positions Disneyland Resort for growth and job creation and enables us to continue delivering incredible guest experiences,” Disneyland officials said in a statement.

Disneyland Resort has previously disclosed that their starting wage rates for various positions span from $19.90 to $25 per hour. Additionally, the resort emphasizes offering a comprehensive benefits package and supplementary resources to support its employees, referred to as cast members.

In May, union representatives took action by filing unfair labor practice charges against Disney on behalf of the 14,000 cast members. These charges allege “unlawful discipline, intimidation, and surveillance” of union members who exercised their right to display union-related items while at work.

The recent strike authorization arrives amidst Disneyland’s peak summer season, following the February announcement of unionization efforts by Disneyland cast members, specifically those employed in the resort’s Characters and Parades departments.

Disney Cast Members haven’t walked off the job since 1984 when there was a 22-day strike.
