Disney hikes Annual Pass prices by up to $50

For the second time in less than a year, Disneyland Resort has hiked prices for annual park passes.

Starting today, theme park-goers will pay between $30 and $50 more than they paid in early 2009 for the same annual passes that can be used at Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure. The hikes range from 11 percent to 26 percent.

The prices for annual passes depend on the number of “blackout” dates. With the cheapest passes, Southern California residents can go to the parks on 170 specific days. The most-expensive passes can be used every day by any buyer. Those Premium pass prices have gone up $90 in the past five years.

Disneyland Resort last increased pass prices on Aug. 1. Suzi Brown, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman, said annual pass prices are usually adjusted once or twice annually. Read about the 2009 price hikes HERE.

Martin has some of the best videos I have ever seen on the internet! The camera angles and the editing are phenomenal! Be sure to check out more of his videos by following the link here or in the Favorite Sites Area.

ROE POEReflections of Earth HD + POE tag from Martins Videos on Vimeo.

Okay… the big one. I set out to create what I hoped would be the definitive edit of this show and feel I have achieved it. Shot from almost 2 dozen angles in full HD see every detail of the show, from the barges being set in the afternoon, to sunset on the lagoon, to evening on the Promonade. See the full show in every detail, from lasers and fireworks to fountain details and earth globe closeups; using multiple composites and keys I`ve captured all at once all the show details the human eye sees that a camera normally can`t. Audio wise is a new stereo clean live pyro mix with source score. And there`s more! After the main show is the 2009 Peace on Earth tag, again in HD and again shot from over a dozen angles with a clean live pyro and source score audio mix.

Disney’s ESPN will soon be in 3D

Walt Disney Co.’s ESPN and Discovery Communications Inc. plan to start 3-D television networks, following the success of 3-D films such as “Avatar.”

ESPN 3-D will start in June and broadcast 85 live events in the first year, the Bristol, Connecticut-based sports network said today in a statement. Discovery, Sony Corp. and Imax Corp. announced a joint venture today to introduce a 3-D channel in 2011.

Television programmers and TV-set makers are increasing 3-D offerings after U.S. box-office sales set a record last year, boosted by films including “Avatar.” Sony and Samsung Electronics Co. have agreed to license technology from RealD, a Beverly Hills, California-based maker of 3-D equipment for cinemas, for new home-entertainment systems.

“This gestating technology at least stands a fighting chance of mainstream acceptance,” Tuna Amobi, an analyst with Standard & Poor’s in New York, said in an e-mail. “A particularly momentous 2009 for 3-D movies has created further consumer awareness of the technology.”

Discovery’s joint venture, which doesn’t have a name yet, will air 3-D shows 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the U.S., according to the statement. Discovery, based in Silver Spring, Maryland, Sony and Imax will own equal stakes in the channel, the companies said. Financial Terms weren’t disclosed.

Discovery, operator of the TLC and Animal Planet networks, will distribute the new channel, which will show movies and programs about natural history, space and science.

New Video File Format Promises to Work on Any Device

Maybe Holywood is wising up a little bit. Five out of six major film studios joined the DECE (Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem), an association of media and technology companies that are trying to make it easier to play movies you buy digitally on any device.

Now The New York Times says the DECE has agreed on a video file format that they hope will make your purchased video library work on devices other than the one you made your purchases on.

The DECE hasn’t announced the name of the format yet, but it won’t restrict who can create a device on which to play it or a store through which to sell it. It’s not DRM-free, mind you; rather, proof that you bought the file will be kept in an online “rights locker,” and any device that’s able to check the locker can play the file. The official announcement is expected this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The DECE will also announce that it has 21 new members, including Cox, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola and — very notably — Netflix. Many of the members will either produce devices that will play files in the new format or offer content using the format through online services. You can guess which one Netflix will likely do, of course.

Here is the portion we are most interested in:

The plan isn’t quite unanimous. There’s one major studio holdout: Disney. It’s backing a competing format called KeyChest. The models aren’t identical, but they share many of the same strengths and weaknesses.

Note that Apple CEO Steve Jobs is Disney’s largest shareholder, and rumors have been popping up that Disney (which owns television network ABC) will join the subscription TV service Apple has been trying to build behind closed doors. Apple — currently the world’s biggest provider of digital video downloads — is conspicuously absent from the DECE.

Disney turns it’s magic on Time Square

logo_DisneyStore

Disney Store will transform an expansive retail space in the heart of New York’s Times Square into a magical state-of-the-art, interactive retail destination set to open in fall 2010. The lease signed with Vornado Realty Trust, negotiated by RCS Real Estate Advisors, and brokered by SRS Real Estate Partners secured the location at 1540 Broadway, between 45th and 46th Street. Inspired by Walt Disney’s legacy of creativity and innovation, the new Disney Store will celebrate Disney’s long-standing history with the city that never sleeps.

Since the debut of Walt Disney’s audio-animatronic figures at the New York World’s Fair in 1964, Disney designers, architects, and engineers have utilized technology to bring new immersive experiences to the city. Continuing the legacy, Disney Store will incorporate technologically advanced displays including an interactive Disney Princess castle to serve as one of many magical centerpieces at the new Times Square location. An all-new children’s theater will feature the latest Disney entertainment, classic animation, and continue Disney’s rich tradition of storytelling.

“Bringing Disney Store to the center of Times Square is a monumental achievement, and we have created a retail experience that complements the energy and innovation that Times Square inspires,” said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores Worldwide. “We’re focused on reinvigorating retail and providing a unique shopping destination to millions of families from all over the world who travel to New York for a magical experience.”

“Disney’s bold move to restore 42nd Street’s greatest landmark theater in the 1990s was the turning point in Times Square’s recent history. We are thrilled that Disney is bringing its creative energies yet again to Times Square with this new Disney Store. An iconic brand is coming again to America’s most iconic place,” said Tim Tompkins, president of Times Square Alliance.

Renovations will begin soon at the Times Square location, designed to showcase a wide assortment of products inspired by iconic Disney characters and key entertainment properties. The newly-designed Disney Store will facilitate interactive play and imagination, host children’s activities, special events, and celebrity appearances. Over the next five years Disney Store plans to strategically balance its retail portfolio, enter new markets, and transform more than 300 locations across the US and Europe to feature the new design.
