Keeping Disneyland’s window displays fresh all year

Keeping Disneyland’s window displays fresh all year

Having worked in retail for a long time I can relate with these guys. Merchandising is hard work but they do a phenomenal job! Here is the article & video from the OC Register:

As the last guest leaves the Disneyland Resort’s theme parks at night, a crew of 10 makes its way out and starts opening up the windows in front of the shops.

The 10 make up the window-decorating crew of the Resort Enhancement team and they’re responsible for keeping the displays in the windows fresh and updated in both theme parks, the hotels and Downtown Disney.

“We want the displays to fit in with the seasons,” said Dawn Keehne, a Resort Enhancement manager.

The team recently worked along Main Street in Disneyland, completely changing out many of the displays from a winter to a spring theme. With all the windows in the park, it can take a week to change them all.

Though the displays are unique, the tools they use are not.

We use all the same tools as most craft people,” said Mark Apepe, lead for the window-decorating team. “Basic tools from drills, hammers and screwdrivers to scissors and a sewing kit.”

Once the seasonal theme is installed, the crew members will add appropriate holiday overlays such as Valentine’s Day.

They will also incorporate the needs of a particular store’s merchandising line, and work with Walt Disney Imagineering and the studio’s animation department.

When they’re not working in the parks, the team is back in a warehouse building located off-property in Anaheim, where they design window displays for other seasons and holidays.

Some of the props used in the displays are antiques or purchased from unique vendors. Because of the unique nature of the displays, the team also manufactures many props and items, from models of the Disney characters to a genie’s lamp.

The Truth Behind “I’m Going to Disneyland!”

The Truth Behind "I'm Going to Disneyland!"

What really happens when NFL quarterbacks take their ritualistic post-Super Bowl vacation? Kurt Warner, for one, thinks Drew Brees had a helluva trip — private jet included.

Death, taxes, and “I’m going to Disneyland” — if there’s one American tradition you can now count on more than Dick Clark ringing in the new year, it’s the Super Bowl MVP looking into a confetti-covered camera and telling you his first championship stop will be an amusement park.

Make no doubt about it: The “Who Dat” hysteria may still be fresh, but Drew Brees already has a Disney commercial and mini-vacation twenty-three years in the making. So how, exactly, did such a cheesy line become unwritten law? And do football players actually, you know, enjoy the trip? We traced the secret history and tracked down a just-retired MVP for the bottom line on “being treated like royalty.”

Current Disneyworld Construction Projects - from WDW Magic

Disney has been really busy trying to refurbish their rides in the so called slow season. It was quite busy when we were there so I hope the unusually heavy volume is not interfering with these refurbs.

WDW Magic is reporting on 3 Disney World Construction projects today.

First one is Peter Pan’s Flight exterior refurbishment. The ride is open but who can miss that scaffolding.

Next is Construction walls starting to come down on the Crystal Palace refurbishment. Which was a big eye sore when we were there a few weeks ago. I am sure it is gonna look good when completed.

Finally Main Street U.S.A railroad station refurbishment. Nothing like walking in the park and seeing this.

Saints' Drew Brees 'Going to Disney World' to Celebrate Victory

So how is New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees celebrating his heroic play in Super Bowl XLIV? In the frenzied moments just after his team claimed the National Football League championship Sunday night in South Florida, he stood in front of a TV camera and shouted five words that have become an almost iconic reaction to milestone achievements: “I’m going to Disney World!”

Brees’s pronouncement, part of the production for one of TV’s most enduring and celebrated commercials, was captured after the Saints’ 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts – a game during which he earned the MVP honor, completing a Super Bowl record-tying 32 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. He was 16-for-17 in the second half, twice leading the Saints from behind. It added up to be a catalyst for the Saints’ first Super Bowl celebration in team history.

On Monday (Feb. 8), Brees was to go to the place where millions of vacationers celebrate their personal milestone moments – Walt Disney World Resort. He was to be joined in the Magic Kingdom by NFL Youth Football players, who will participate with the Saints star in a Super Bowl celebration parade down Main Street, U.S.A.

This latest commercial is the 42nd of a series that began in 1987 following Super Bowl XXI. The first “I’m going to Disney World” commercial, featuring New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms, was regarded as a groundbreaking concept – a produced national commercial involving a current event, airing on major networks within hours of its conclusion. Brees joins a lineup of people from sports and beyond who have celebrated milestone accomplishments in “I’m going to Disney World” commercials.

UPDATE: Drew Brees is scheduled to visit Walt Disney World Monday for a special ticker-tape parade at 11:55 a.m. at Magic Kingdom Park.

Is Google and Disney Heading to China?

Google Inc., the world’s No.1 Internet search company, which threatened to quit China last month over censorship and hacking concerns, was among investors in the Disney-led consortium, the sources said on Monday.

The consortium planned to buy a stake of between 30 and 40 percent in Bus Online for more than $100 million via a purchase of old and new shares to be issued by the company in private placements, said the sources.

“Disney wants to be a strategic partner not just a financial investor in Bus Online as Disney is going to do many things in China — for example, the theme park to be opened in Shanghai,” said one of the sources.

“To Disney, the deal is not just about sharing in the growth of China’s advertising market but more about the promotion of Disney, the brand itself, and this is strategically important to Disney in China.”

In November, Disney’s made a breakthrough deal to build one of its signature theme parks in Shanghai, marking a major advance for Western media and entertainment companies seeking to crack the tough Chinese market.

Senior executives of Disney are expected to fly to Beijing to meet Chinese media regulators to discuss Disney’s long-term development plan in China including the Bus Online deal, said another of the sources.

GOOGLE IN FOCUS

In the wake of its recent problems in China, Google is finalizing a deal that will let the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) help it investigate a corporate espionage attack that may have originated in China.

Beijing has already warned Washington not to make the Google incident political, in addition to other growing sources of friction between the two nations, including Tibet, Taiwan, yuan appreciation and Sino-U.S. trade.

Google was expected to take only a small stake in the Bus Online deal, while Disney aimed to take the greater part, said the sources, adding that no agreement had been signed yet.

The sources briefed on the possible deal declined to be identified as the negotiation process is confidential. Bus Online, headquartered in Shanghai, declined to comment.

A Google spokeswoman said the company could not immediately comment. Disney could not be immediately reached for comment.

Bus Online is China’s No.1 in-bus digital media and advertising company, with revenue of about 314.5 million yuan ($46.07 million) in 2009.

Since 2004, the company has received a total of $80 million from venture capital funds and banks including IDG, Yangtze Fund, China Renaissance Capital Investment and CCB International.

Bus Online is the exclusive partner of state broadcaster CCTV and the official Xinhua news agency for in-bus media content and advertising.

Yum! Brands’ fried chicken restaurant chain KFC would sign a deal with Bus Online to allow the Chinese company to set up screens in KFC’s more than 2,000 outlets across China, said the sources.

Disney expected to provide media content to Bus Online for its partnership with KFC in China on the condition that Disney and Bus Online agreed on the equity stake investment first, they said.

Disney Child Star’s Clothing Line Deemed Too Racy By Some

Disney Child Star's Clothing Line Deemed Too Racy By Some

A line of children’s clothing called Ooh! La La Couture promoted by a young Disney star has come under fire for being too adult, and has even been likened to adult lingerie by some critics.

The Emily Grace Collection is named after 8-year-old “Hannah Montana” star Emily Grace Reaves, who helps design the line.

Her friend Noah Cyrus, 9, has also helped promote the collection in photos and online videos. Noah is Disney superstar Miley Cyrus’ younger sister.

According to the official press release announcing the line in September, the designs feature “versatile styles that can be worn with sweet ballerina slippers, casual sneakers or paired with lace stockings and boots for more of a rock and roll look.”

But the similarity of the clothes to adult lingerie is undeniable, say critics.
