‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ International Trailer

Walt Disney Pictures has released an international trailer for Nicolas Cage’s ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ film. The film is set to release this summer, July 16, 2010. For more information about the movie look below.

Walt Disney Studios, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub, the creators of the “National Treasure” franchise, present THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE — an innovative and epic comedy adventure about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center of an ancient conflict between good and evil.

Balthazar Blake (NICOLAS CAGE) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (ALFRED MOLINA).  Balthazar can’t do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (JAY BARUCHEL), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness.  It’ll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE. The screenplay is by Matt Lopez and Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard from a screen story by Matt Lopez and Larry Konner & Mark Rosenthal.

Article from the Orlando Sentinel:

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office released a 911 call this morning (Wednesday) in the two-bus crash Tuesday that sent eight people to the hospital, one with serious injuries.

A Walt Disney World bus struck the back of an empty — stopped because of an apparent mechanical problem — Waldorf Astoria hotel bus in a right-hand lane near the parking toll plaza outside Epcot.

Disney off the Beaten Path: Spending Eternity at the Happiest Place on Earth

No, don’t be alarmed:  Disney hasn’t gone into the funeral business, although if they did, rest assured there would be takers.   But it just so happens that some die-hard  (I’m keeping the pun) Disney fans have taken matters into their own hands and decided that spending eternity at the happiest place on earth is a great idea.   I discovered this recently when an acquaintance of mine, a huge Disney fan, confided in me that her father’s ashes had been scattered “Somewhere in Disney World.”  When I inquired where, she only assured me that it was in a very private place and not in the parks.  I figured this was a fluke, but when I did some research, I discovered numerous reports about spreading a loved one’s ashes in Disney parks, part of a trend that began in the late 90s and is prevalent enough today that Disney reportedly has special cleaning crews, armed with vacuums capable of picking up dust and bone fragments, for such occasions.

So is it true?  Well, Disney won’t say for sure and really, I can’t blame them.  It’s a rather depressing subject for such a happy place.  Officially, Disney gets a handful of requests a year to scatter a loved-one’s ashes in the parks, which they turn down.  Unofficially, it happens,  just like Flash Mountain (people flashing when the camera takes their photo on Splash Mountain) happens. Disney can’t stop everything and there are only so many cameras.  And really, what’s the harm?   They either wash away in the rain or are cleaned up.  Topping the list in popularity is, not surprisingly, The Haunted Mansion, followed by Pirates of the Caribbean and It’s a Small World.  The latter, presumably, for that pesky mother-in-law you’ve just got to stick it to one last time.

As for my friend, her father had always loved Fort Wilderness and the family had been going there every few years since it opened.  It was a special place where she watched her little brother learn to walk and where her mom didn’t have to cook dinner.  Once, both sets of grandparents were able to join them, the one time they all vacationed together.  And her dad often talked about buying an RV when he retired and staying there during the colder months, but that didn’t happen.  When he got sick, they didn’t plan for his funeral; it was too much for the family to think about.  When he died, not of his disease but suddenly, of complications related to it, the family traded doing something meaningful for simply gertting through it.  It wasn’t until a year after he passed away that her brother got the idea of spreading their dad’s ashes at Disney World.   It first it became a bit of a joke, but the more they talked about it, the more it began to make sense.

I asked my friend if it was odd going back knowing that her dad’s ashes were there.  She said no, that it was comforting.    Knowing that he was at one of his favorite places gave them peace, more so now that all of them are living in different parts of the country.  They’ll  always go back to  Disney World, she explained.   While I may frown at the idea of dusting Pirates with your Great Aunt Alice, I found their story very touching.   I understand why Disney doesn’t allow it, but this story and others like it gave people comfort.  It meant something to them. And for that, I think they can be forgiven for bending the rules a bit.

Disclaimer  Mumbo-Jumbo:  Chip and Co doesn’t endorse breaking any rules at Disney World. We don’t even re-use refillable mugs. Who, us?  We don’t even know what a refillable mug is.

Nuclear plant shutdown saps some of Disney World’s power

Problems at a nuclear power plant on Florida’s Gulf coast have created a bit of a headache for Walt Disney World.

Progress Energy’s nuclear plant in Crystal River has been shut down since late last year, after workers in the midst of a maintenance project discovered a crack in the containment wall that surrounds the facility’s reactor building

That has in turn left Disney World’s semi-autonomous government, the Reedy Creek Improvement District, scrambling. About 10 percent of the district’s power is generated at the nuclear plant, which is about 100 miles northwest of Disney World.

Disneyworld Eye Sore or Fond Memory..You decide

For as long as I can remember when making my rounds in Fantasyland I and countless others have walked by the above picture. Now it is home to stroller parking and usually has a Cast Member directing people away. But where did it come from?

It was called Skyway to Tomorrowland / Fantasyland

The Skyway, one of the original Walt Disney World attractions, present when the park first opened in 1971, was an aerial cable car ride, which took guests between the Fantasyland and TomorrowLand in the Magic Kingdom. The ride lasted about 5 minutes and offered some spectacular views but did present an eye sore in photos and video.

Here is a complete ride video from 1998

While the Tomorrowland station was demolished in 2009 the Fantasyland Station is still alive and well.

For a complete history of this ride check out Yesterland website here.

So what about the Fantasyland Station is it a monument of things gone by? Will it be demolished for something else when the Fantasyland expansion begins?

We will have to see in the upcoming months..

Let me know what you think in the comment section below.

Ask a Disney Question: Does Disney Cruise Lines Play Recent Movies on Board?

Roger B. asks:  I read somewhere that they have a movie theater and I wondered if my family and I would be able to see Alice in Wonderland on our upcoming trip…?

Love the site keep up the great work! I told all my friends about ChipandCo!!

Roger:  Thanks for reading Chip and Co and for spreading the word around.  Yes, you’ll be able to see new movies on DCL ships.

Fun fact:   Disney often premieres new movies on their ships about twelve hours before the movies are released into the theater.

Have a great time on your cruise.

Alien Vs. Pooh: A Bedtime Story For the Little Gamer In Your Life

You probably think you’ve already read all of the adventures of Christopher Robin and Pooh in the 100 Aker Wood.

You’ve read about the the spelling bee, about Tigger’s dreams of Africa and the Harvest Festival. But have you, I wonder, ever read about the time when Aliens came to the wood?

I didn’t think so.

Sit down, dust off the Internet and give this lengthy tale of bothered stomachs, left 4 dead Eeyore and a Tigger doing what Tiggers do best… while driving a power loader.

Ask a Disney Question: What's the Best Value Resort?

Nancy W. writes:  What is the best value resort to stay at while visiting Disney World? Are some better than others or offer more features?

Nancy:  Thanks for your question.  I love staying at the values.  It gets you on site for a reasonable price and gives you most of the perks that someone staying at a deluxe enjoys without the high price, but the rooms, at around 260 square feet, are small and the decor is a bit loud.   Still, if you want a clean, happy place to rest your head at night, the values are the place to do it.  Despite the fact that Pop is closer to Epcot and Hollywood Studios and the All-Stars is closer to Animal Kingdom, there isn’t a huge difference in travel times to and from the parks when going in your own vehicle.   All of the resorts have similar amenities, food courts, self-parking, and multiple kid-friendly pools.  Having said that, I do have my favorite and it’s Pop Century.

I’m a big fan of Pop  for one huge reason:   Unlike the other values, it tends not to get large school groups.  It’s not that I don’t love children; I have three of my own. But I don’t relish being woken up at 2:00 a.m. because a group of rambunctious cheerleaders decided to they need to practice.    Lately, this type of behavior has been a big issue for the All-Stars, generating plenty of complaints on Disney message boards.   Of the three All-Star Resorts, All-Star Sports tends to get the most school groups.

Pop has two other strong points as well.  One, it doesn’t share a bus with any other resorts. At the All-Star Resorts, your bus will stop at all three resorts before it makes the journey to the park, making for crowded buses.  Another strength is Pop’s food court, which routinely ranks the highest of the values in guest satisfaction.

One advantage of the All-Stars has to do with check-in.  While the All-Stars have nearly 6000 rooms, check-in is divided by the three resorts.  Pop has less than 3000 rooms, but all of them check-in in the same lobby.   There are lots of desks and it’s remarkably well-organized, but it can get hectic if you’re visiting during an especially busy time.

Beyond these points, I think it becomes a matter of what your needs are and your personal tastes.   All-Star Music has family suites which are great for larger families or groups, so if you need more room, it may be your best choice.  Younger kids aren’t going to get many of the pop culture references at Pop, so the may be lost on them, although it’s still cheerful and bright, two big pluses for kids.    Kids seem to enjoy All-Star Movies because they can see icons of some their favorite characters, but I figure they’re seeing enough characters in the parks.  Not seeing a gigantic Mr. Potato Head outside their resort room window isn’t going to ruin Junior’s trip, so choose the resort that fits you best.

I hope this helps!

Classic Disneyland Photo - Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse Construction

Artist and designer Kevin Kidney posted photos of the construction of the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse at Disneyland in 1962.

It’s the early part of 1962 and six tons of steel are rapidly becoming the Family Robinson’s island homestead. Had construction stopped right here it still would have  been a very impressive work of minimalist modern art.
