Ask a Disney Question: Closing Dates for Star Tours Refurbishment.

This question come from Stephanie G., who asks “I heard the Star Tours ride at Hollywood Studios is under construction. When is it scheduled to open again?

Stephanie, thanks for reading Chip and Co and for your question.  Star Tours is scheduled to close for refurbishment in October 2010.  It will be reopened in 2011.  There is no official date for the reopening.  We’ll keep everyone posted, but projections are pretty far out at this point, so don’t count on it being open in early 2011.  Star Tours, which debuted in 1987, will be redone in a high definition, Disney Real-D 3D screen, with an improved motion simulator.  It will feature Jar Jar Binks and a podracing scene similar to that shown in the Phantom Menace.

Disney World Presents "Fall" Season of Sights, Sounds, Smells and Very Good Tastes
New treats for the taste buds await Walt Disney World guests this fall – a season that also will feature treats for the ears of music-lovers, treats for the eyes of art-lovers and sports fans, treats that make good “scents” and lots of just plain trick-or-treats.
Fall is traditionally a season of special events at the Vacation Kingdom, and 2010 will be no exception as the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, Night of Joy, Festival of the Masters, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, the Children’s Miracle Network Classic for PGA players and the Old Spice Classic all return – to be joined by an all-new running event.  And to top it off: There will be new dining adventures, new digs for Fido, and a place to make a “new you.”
Here’s a snapshot of what’s in store, beginning with what’s “all new”:
New adventures in dining
During fall 2010, new culinary adventures coming to the Vacation Kingdom include an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria and a Latin chicken restaurant, while a popular Mexican restaurant reopens with a fresh menu and expanded seating:
  • In Italy at Epcot World Showcase, Via Napoli, an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria operated by the Patina Restaurant Group, will feature wood-burning ovens – and will import water from a source that most resembles the water in Naples, Italy, home of some of the world’s best pizza dough.  This 300-seat pizzeria will feature a menu inspired by the famous pizzerias of southern Italy.  The menu also will feature pastas, salads, sandwiches and Italian wines.  The Patina Restaurant Group also operates Tutto Italia Ristorante at the pavilion.
  • At Downtown Disney Marketplace, Pollo Campero, an international Latin chicken quick-service restaurant chain, has partnered with franchisee Levy Campero to deliver a new restaurant concept.  The restaurant will showcase Pollo Campero’s signature Latin chicken (which features the taste of lime and orange juices, red bell peppers and a special blend of Latin herbs and spices) as well as a new fresh concept named Fresh A-Peel (featuring fresh salads, sandwiches, fruits and healthy snacks) plus vegetarian, gluten-free, sugar-free, low-sodium or organic offerings.
  • In Mexico at Epcot World Showcase, an expanded Cantina de San Angel restaurant will feature 400 combined seats with al fresco seating for quick-service meals plus a new, air-conditioned table-service restaurant featuring authentic specialty dishes from Mexico created by the talented culinary team at San Angel Inn, LLC., which has operated the food service at the Mexico pavilion for more than 25 years.
New digs for Fido and Frisky
Slated for a late-summer opening, a full-service luxury pet care facility on Bonnet Creek Parkway across from Disney’s Port Orleans Resort will provide a comfortable home-away-from-home for Fido, Frisky and all their pet pals!
  • The one-of-a-kind facility will be able to accommodate up to 270 dogs in a variety of standard and luxury suites, some with private outdoor patios and play yards.  The separate “Kitty City” pavilion will be able to house up to 30 cats in two- and four-story cat condos.  A special room is also available for the boarding of “pocket pets,” Including pet hamsters and birds.
  • The facility, to be operated by Best Friends Pet Care, will comprise more than 17,000 square feet of air-conditioned indoor space plus 10,000 square feet of covered outdoor runs and play areas.  It will replace the five existing pet care facilities throughout Walt Disney World Resort and will be open to both Walt Disney World Resort guests and visitors staying off-property.
New ‘Re-treats’ for your skin
In time for fall, Givenchy is opening a shop at the France pavilion in Epcot that will be the only retail location in the United States to offer the full line of Givenchy make-up and skin-care products, as well as a large selection of Givenchy fragrances.
New ‘ultimate night out’ for runner
Imagine a foot race that starts at 10 p.m. and finishes, 13.1 miles later, with an exclusive party replete with culinary delights and specialty drinks from around the world.  That’s the scenario for the signature race of the inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend on Oct. 1-2.
  • The half marathon on Oct. 2 caps a schedule that also includes a two-day expo, 5K fun run and kids races – all during the opening two days of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.  The full details and registration are at www.disneywinedinerun.com.
Let the music play!
A star-powered 15-act lineup topped by Casting Crowns, Third Day, mercyme, Chris Tomlin, David Crowder*Band and Family Force 5 will take the stage when Night of Joy returns to Magic Kingdom Sept. 10-11, kicking off the fall season’s special events.  The lineup of Christian artists appearing over the two nights runs the spectrum from Rock, Hip Hop and R&B … to Pop, Adult Contemporary and Gospel – continuing a tradition that has been a hallmark of Night of Joy since 1983 when the event began.
  • Admission to Night of Joy requires a special ticket, with concerts taking place during the evening following Magic Kingdom closing.  Entry also includes the opportunity to enjoy many of the park’s popular attractions.  More information is available at www.nightofjoy.com.
  • At Epcot, the Eat to the Beat! Concert Series will serve up music as an accompaniment to the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.  A lineup of recording artists is scheduled to perform Oct. 1-Nov. 14 at America Gardens Theatre.  Night Ranger, Boyz II Men, Taylor Dayne and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are among the musically diverse acts scheduled to appear on designated dates (lineup is subject to change without notice).  The concerts are included with Epcot admission.  More information will be available online this summer at www.disneyworld.com/foodandwine.
A grand adventure in good tastes continues
When Walt Disney World Resort turned 25 in 1996, it popped the cork on a concept that has grown to become one of the Vacation Kingdom’s signature events: The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.
  • The 2010 festival, presented by Vanity Fair Napkins Oct. 1 through Nov. 14, is celebrating “15 years of delicious discoveries” with a focus on outdoor marketplaces where everyone from neophytes to epicures and aficionados can nibble and sip their way around the Epcot World Showcase promenade and across six continents of food and beverage adventures.
  • While specific details are still in development for the 15th annual festival, expect talented culinarians from across America and around the world to be involved with the marketplaces as well as with specialty dinners, tequila tastings, seminars featuring cooking demonstrations and wine tastings, and the popular Saturday night grand tastings – Party for the Senses.  The festival also will feature the popular Eat to the Beat! concert series each evening.
  • Details about the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival will be available this summer online at www.disneyworld.com/foodandwine.
Hauntingly happy fun is happening
If the headless horseman is romping down Main Street, U.S.A. aboard his steed, ghostly apparitions are flitting among the buildings of Magic Kingdom, Cinderella Castle is draped in eerie hues and the night sky is being painted with bursts of orange and green fireworks, it can only mean one thing: Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is back!
  • Following Magic Kingdom closing on select autumn evenings between Sept. 14 and Nov. 1, the park reopens for this special-ticket event featuring trick-or-treating throughout the park, “Happy HalloWishes” fireworks spectacular, “Mickey’s Boo-to-You Halloween Parade” – including Disney characters and the stars of the Haunted Mansion attraction, and the opportunity to experience popular attractions including, of course, Haunted Mansion.
  • Information about dates and tickets will be available at www.disneyworld.com/halloween.
Picture this …
Approximately 150 award-winning artists who turn clay, wood, metals, oils, watercolors and more into creations that treat the eyes – into things such as paintings, jewelry, sculptures and photographs – will show off their works at the 36th Festival of the Masters presented by Sharpie® Nov. 12-14 at Downtown Disney.
  • One of the Southeast’s most highly regarded juried art festivals, Festival of the Masters features live entertainment and family-friendly activities each day.
  • Admission and parking are complimentary.  For more information, guests may visit www.disneyworld.com/artfestival.
Drama on the links
The 40th chapter of a PGA TOUR tradition will be written Nov. 11-14 when the Children’s Miracle Network Classic takes place on Disney’s Palm and Magnolia golf courses.
  • If the latest chapter follows the script of recent decades, it will be filled with drama, as 21 of the last 28 Classics have been decided either by a playoff or a single stroke in regulation.
  • 2009 was no exception, as Canada’s Stephen Ames parred the second hole of a playoff with George McNeill and Justin Leonard to win the $846,000 winner’s share of a $4.7 million purse.
  • The Classic is the final official-money event of the PGA TOUR season, which means some players in the field likely will be hoping for a paycheck big enough to save their careers on the TOUR.  More information: www.ChildrensMiracleNetworkClassic.com.
Spicing the Thanksgiving feast with basketball
Five years ago a new early-season tournament entered the college basketball universe, with Arkansas beating Marist for the inaugural Old Spice Classic crown at Walt Disney World Resort.  Since then, North Carolina State, Gonzaga and most recently Florida State have claimed the title.
  • This November a new crop of teams will huddle-up at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex with one goal: the 2010 Old Spice Classic championship.  California, Notre Dame, Temple, Texas A&M and Wisconsin – all of which went to the NCAA’s “big dance” this spring – will be joined by Boston College, Georgia and Manhattan for a Thanksgiving weekend basketball feast that will feature 12 games through three days, Nov. 25, 26 and 28.
  • Additional information can be found on the Old Spice Classic Web site at www.OldSpiceClassic.com.  For more information about ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, visit www.DisneySports.com.
They’re going to Disney World!
In TV commercials since 1987, football heroes have beamed and screamed “I’m Going to Disney World!” after they helped their team win a Super Bowl.  In a twist on the storyline, about 2,000 football players from across the country have been shouting the same line each year since 1995 – but with the dream that Super Bowl glory will await at the end of the trip.
  • They are the members of the 64 Pop Warner Little Scholars football teams that converge at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for the Pop Warner Super Bowl each December.  To reach the Pop Warner Super Bowl, teams nationwide will battle their way through local and regional tournaments.  Teams compete in four divisions based on size and age – Jr. Pee Wee (ages 8-10 yrs.), Pee Wee (9-11 yrs.), Jr. Midget (10-12 yrs.) and Midget (11-14 yrs.).
  • In addition to the gridiron action, the spectacle includes hundreds of squads competing in the Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships.  For more information, visit www.PopWarner.com.
Music, art, food & wine, PGA golf and more…in one weekend
During a final fling of fall special-events fun, as Walt Disney World Resort transitions into a winter wonderland, guests can experience one very action-packed weekend Nov. 12-14:
  • The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival
  • The Festival of the Masters art show
  • The Children’s Miracle Network Classic for professional golfers
  • Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.
During Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in Magic Kingdom on select evenings in November and December (including Nov. 12), guests can experience the enchantment of Castle Dream Lights on Cinderella Castle plus two special entertainment extravaganzas, “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade” and the holiday-themed fireworks spectacular, “Holiday Wishes-Celebrate the Spirit of the Season.”  The special after-hours party, which requires a separate admission ticket, also features live Disney character stage shows, character greetings, cookies and cocoa, and even “snow” on Main Street, U.S.A. More details will be available at www.DisneyWorld.com/holidays.

Disney World Recipe – Making a Mango Lassi from the Sanaa Restaurant

Disney World Recipe - Making a Mango Lassi from the Sanaa Restaurant

This sounds like a wonderful drink from the Disney Park Blog that I might try making tonight for a after dinner dessert. I think I have all the ingredients but the mango which I know are in season right now! Enjoy the article

Sometimes a sweet comes along that is beyond delicious. A backbeat of creamy yogurt with high notes of sweet mango make this an unusual and memorable end to a savory meal at Sanaa at Kidani Village at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. (It’s on the “non-alcoholic specialties” menu, but we prefer it for dessert.)

A cross between a smoothie and a milkshake zapped with the tartness of yogurt, the vibrant drink is served in India as an aperitif or as a side with fiery cuisine. But we love it for an offbeat meal closer. Whip up a batch, then stash in the fridge (just whip it again in the blender or whisk just before sipping).

Mango Lassi is just one of the creative tastes at Sanaa (sah-NAH), where the menu showcases tastes of the islands of the Indian Ocean that are all part of Africa. And there’s a feast for the eyes, too, with a savannah with African animals just a few yards from the restaurant and tall windows for viewing. Do you have a favorite Sanaa dish?

Mango Lassi
(Chilled Mango Yogurt Drink) Serves 4
2 cups ripe mango, chopped
Pinch of salt
1 cup chilled whole milk
1 cup whole-milk plain yogurt
2 to 3 teaspoons sugar, optional

  1. If mango has stringy fibers, push through a nylon sieve with the back of a spoon. The remaining mango should not contain any stringy pulp. Refrigerate until cold.
  2. Combine mango, pinch of salt, milk and yogurt in a blender and puree until smooth. Taste and add sugar to taste. If you would like the lassi a bit colder, add about eight ice cubes to the blender. Can be refrigerated up to 24 hours.

9AM – Beverly Hills 90210 Episode #1992-031 – “Necessity is a Mother” – Dylan reacts badly to having his mother back in town and living with him until a dramatic incident helps them to shed some light on their relationship

11AM – One Tree Hill Episode #2008-128 – “Show Me How To Live” – Even though Sam’s feeling closer to her birth mother, Brooke moves forward with plans to adopt her. Peyton’s friends throw her a baby shower.

12PM – One Tree Hill Episode #2008–130 – “Remember Me as a Time of Day” – Amid complications, Peyton gives birth. Lucas thanks Karen for being such a good mom. After Brooke and her mother reconcile, Victoria gives Brooke the company back – only for Brooke to ask her to stay on.

The *NEW* Disney Dream is coming to Port Canaveral

Even as details continue to emerge about Disney Cruise Line’s latest ship, the Dream, work is progressing on millions of dollars in construction and improvements at the ship’s future home base at Port Canaveral.

The company last week announced plans for a new “premier” tier of dining on the Dream, a French-inspired restaurant called Remy.

The top-deck restaurant with seating for 80 will feature gourmet cuisine from Chef Arnaud Lallement from l’Assiette Champenoise, a Michelin two-star restaurant just outside Reims, France, and Chef Scott Hunnel from award-winning Victoria & Albert’s at Walt Disney World.

The 1,250-room ship is due to start sailing out of Port Canaveral in January 2011 and signifies a continuing, and mutually beneficial, relationship between the port and the company.

Port Canaveral is spending about $7.5 million building Disney a 1,000-space parking garage and helping to finance $22 million in upgrades for its custom terminal.

Construction work is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1.

With both projects, the financial impact on Port Canaveral is expected to be minimal.

Revenues from the parking facility will go toward repaying the port’s cost for that project. And Disney is repaying the port for the terminal upgrades.

The terminal expansion and the new parking garage are part of deal inked between Port Canaveral and Disney that keeps the cruise line sailing from Brevard County the next 15 years.

In 2012, Disney’s other new ship, the Fantasy, is scheduled to arrive at Port Canaveral.

A Beautiful Place to Trade - Disney Pin Celebration 2010

The Disney Park Blog discusses with us this years Disney Pin Celebration 2010 and the theme behind this years event:

Nestled deep in the heart of Trading Valley just off Route 498, you will find the eclectic little town of Trade City, USA. The town has many must see attractions like the world largest ear hat, lanyard and backer card. Sounds like a beautiful place to trade, doesn’t it? That story was the original concept behind the theme of this year’s 10th Annual Disney Pin Celebration (has it been ten years?) which will be held August 27-29, 2010 at Epcot inside World ShowPlace.

“For the design of Trade City, we were thinking Main Street, U.S.A. meets Radiator Springs,” explained Jeanne Lewis, product developer for this event. “Yet we needed a reason for Guests to visit the city, so we created a Founders Day celebration. The funny thing is the town is celebrating 10 years just like Disney Pin Trading is celebrating 10 years. What a coincidence! (laughs)”

There will be a variety of specially designed items created just for this event including figurines with pins, a limited edition ear hat with a pin and lots of new (you guessed it) limited edition pins. I’m having lots of trouble deciding on my favorite pin this year, yet I really like this one pictured below. It features a slider element whose contents won’t be revealed until the event. Any guesses as to which pin was returned to Tinker Bell?

Disney Giving Back to the Community in 2009

It is great to see Disney and other large companies giving back. This article comes to us from the Disney Park Blog where they share with us their involvement with the local communities around the world.

Guests from around the world sometimes ask us about Disney’s involvement in local communities. Whether it’s through contributing to our local economies, applying environmentally friendly ways to do business or supporting organizations that help our communities, our focus on being a good corporate citizen is part of the legacy of Walt Disney that guides our actions today.

We’ve just released our 2009 Community Reports that provide an overview of our commitment as a responsible employer, active community leader and sound environmental steward. In many ways the reports are the tip of an iceberg, a partial view of the many ways the Company and our generous Cast Members contribute to our communities, whether in China, Southern California, Central Florida, France, The Bahamas or Hawaii.

Among the highlights from this year’s reports –

  • More than 43,000 tons of material was diverted from landfills through recycling and donations at Disneyland Resort -– enough to nearly fill Space Mountain!
  • Walt Disney World Cast Members come from all over the world, representing more than 80 nationalities and speaking 53 different languages
  • Disneyland Paris generates 56,000 direct and indirect jobs in France
  • More than 100,000 children, youth and families from underprivileged and local community groups have benefited from Hong Kong Disneyland programs
  • Disney Cruise Line granted more than 500 wish trips to children faced with life-threatening medical conditions

Our Cast Members and our Company make dreams come true daily -– in our parks and resorts and on board our ships –- and in the many communities where we live and work. To read more about our community efforts, visit the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Corporate Responsibility webpage.

Taking Twin Toddlers to Disney World.

Taking Twin Toddlers to Disney World.

If you’re a parent of young twins or even if you have  two children who are very close together in age, you know that  just  going to Target can be something of a logistical nightmare that entails dragging lots of gear, hoping for a cart with two seats and straps that actually work, and doing everything you can to avoid meltdowns in the process, but that’s nothing compared to going someplace like Disney World. The truth is, taking two two-year olds on vacation is not the same as taking a one-year old (who probably can’t walk) and a three-year old (who is probably out of diapers and starting to listen better).  You’ll face additional challenges.   The extra work required  can run the gamut from mere annoyances to real safety issues.  But is it worth it?  I think so, and with a little planning, you can definitely make the experience  easier.

The Stroller Issue:

Probably the biggest challenge you’ll face.   Buses are especially difficult, so much so that I just avoid them completely because it’s just about impossible to get two small children (and your other kids, if you have them) on the bus and all while taking everything out of the basket of the stroller, collapsing  it, and then loading it on the bus.  While it can be done, expect annoyed stares from fellow passengers.

If you’re going to use the bus, carry a backpack that you can put everything into  from the stroller basket ahead of time.  This will make getting the stroller folded after  you take the kids out a lot easier.  Definitely don’t try to use the buses if you’re alone. This is a two-person job.  Once the kids are out of their stroller, keep in mind that Disney bus stops are very busy, so you’ll want to keep a close eye on them.

You can easily avoid Disney buses if you have your own car.  In fact, this is the one time I would absolutely insist on having a car at Disney World.  If having a car is not an option, consider staying at a monorail or Boardwalk resort.  You can also minimize the number of times you’ll need to take the bus by using the monorail and boats to park hop.   You can park hop between Epcot and the Magic Kingdom using the monorail and you can also park hop between Epcot and Hollywood Studios using the Friendship Boats. Both of these options allow you to keep your children in the stroller.

You shouldn’t have too much difficulty maneuvering your stroller around the parks.  Most double side-by-side strollers are only slightly wider than a wheel chair and just about everything in Disney World is wheelchair accessible.  Keep in mind that you’ll have to take the kids out of their stroller at sit-down restaurants and while waiting in line for attractions and character meet-and-greets.  The biggest issue is the bottlenecks that happen in some parks.  On a crowded day, it can be nearly impossible to maneuver your stroller around Frontierland and in Tomorrowland, so if possible, try to visit the World during a slower time of year.  If that’s not possible, go to the parks early in the day when they are less crowded.

Some twin parents use two single strollers rather than a double stroller. Not only is it easier to maneuver and to get on the buses, it allows you to split up if one twin needs to go back to the resort, for example.  Even better, and I’m sure all twin moms know about this, it helps avoid what I call twin fight club:  Bored with being in the stroller, they start smacking each other.   Come on, you know  you’ve been there.   It’s a well-known fact that if one twin falls asleep in the stroller the other twin is obsessively compelled to poke and annoy his sibling.  The only downside of this is that one parent can’t push both strollers while the other parent does something on her own.

Feeding them:

If your kids are still using a highchair, consider getting portable booster seats.  They’re small and easy to pack.  Most  rental houses off site will have one highchair. Ask your agent if your home comes with a highchair; they may possibly be able to give you a second one as well.  I’ve never  had any trouble finding highchairs in Disney restaurants.

Where are they going to sleep?

Sleep is a big one.  My twins sleep in separate rooms at home and the first couple of times we travelled to Disney World with them and they stayed in the same room, it took some getting used to.   If your kids are still in cribs, you’ll get a Pack and Play if you’re staying at a Disney resort. These P&Ps are slightly smaller than the ones you’re used to at home, but they are clean and in good shape. They’re fine for kids under two-years of age.  Some Disney resorts also have cribs, but they are on a first come, first served basis.   Many rental houses will have one crib; again, ask if you can get two.  If you need to rent a crib, I’ve had luck with Orlando Crib Rentals.  They, like other rental agencies, will deliver the crib to your resort.

Space constraints limit where you can stay. While Disney will give you a P&P for each child who needs one, you won’t be able to fit two P&Ps in a value room and still get around.  You’ll need to go with a moderate or larger if you’re staying on Disney property, and even then, two P&Ps will be a tight fit.  We stayed at Ft. Wilderness however, and found there was enough room in the bedroom for two P&Ps.  A better solution is to stay off site in a rental house, which can actually be a very economical choice.  I’ve used AllStar Vacation Homes and been pleased with them.  You could also rent Disney Vacation Club points.

Finally, the babycare centers are great. The problem for twin parents is that you can’t bring your stroller inside.  This isn’t such a huge issue if you have help, but if you’re on your own, you’re likely to find yourself changing one toddler while attempting to corral another.  If you’re a twin mom or you have two kids who aren’t yet at the age where they understand  that they need to stay put, this is a pretty stressful situation.   In this case, consider using a family bathroom.  You can bring the stroller in and one child can sit while you change the other.

My wife and I have stayed here before and the whole Marriott Village is great. It is very close to Walt Disney World and very clean and comfortable. If you are not staying on property I highly recommend this place!
