Disney Parks today announced a new program that celebrates the spirit of volunteer service with a simple proposition: “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day.”

Disney hopes to inspire families to volunteer in their communities during 2010 through this first-of-its-kind program. One million people who perform volunteer service for a participating organization will receive a free one-day admission ticket to a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park.

While the “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” program kicks off Jan. 1, right now guests can learn more about the program and how to get their free one-day admission to a Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme park by visiting www.DisneyParks.com (for the United States and Puerto Rico) or www.DisneyParks.ca (for Canada).

Is Johnny Depp leaving Pirates of the Caribbean?

Interesting article from MTV talking about Johnny Depp’s possible departure from the Pirates Series:

Following the recent departure of Disney studio chief Dick Cook, Johnny Depp admitted to being less enthusiastic about returning to the role of Captain Jack Sparrow for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (“Pirates” part 4, for those who lost count). And the fans in turn admitted that they’d give up on the franchise without him in it.

That apparently isn’t stopping Disney though. According to a tip received by Cinema Blend, the studio is preparing to replace Depp if/when he decides to abandon ship. This may not happen with “On Stranger Tides,” as Disney is likely prepared to offer him as much money as it takes to keep him aboard. The actor, who is said to be aware the last two movies “sucked,” will definitely not be sticking around for the fifth and sixth installments if the tipster is to be believed.

Disney’s A Christmas Carol, a multi-sensory thrill ride re-envisioned by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Robert ZemeckisNew Trailer for Disney's Christmas Carol, captures the fantastical essence of the classic Dickens tale in a groundbreaking 3-D motion picture event.

Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gary Oldman) and his cheery nephew (Colin FirthNew Trailer for Disney's Christmas Carol). Mice Chat has some excellent photos and coverage of Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy and Disney’s Halloween Screams Fireworks show. Click the picture above for the jump.

Also for your viewing pleasure I have included some video from All Ears of the Ghost Galaxy show.

A montage of several of the sound and light sequences that run at night on the new Ghost Galaxy attraction that has taken over Space Mountain for Halloween at Disneyland. We talked to one of the Imagineers who designed this and it’s all done with video projection – but it achieves some amazing effects! The band was playing on the Tomorrowland stage so there’s some competition with the sound from Ghost Galaxy in some of these clips and the occasional flicker you see is from shooting my camera in low light (you won’t see it in real life).

The Disney Diamond Make Over

Disney announced plans to bring their classics out of the “Disney vault” and give them the Blu-ray makeover. This new “Diamond Collection” will feature 14 classics, including Beauty and the Beast and Snow White. Personally I have not adopted the Blu-ray transition yet but have seen the stunning quality and sound that comes with Blu-ray. I guess it just isn’t a high enough priority for me yet..Maybe someday when the prices of the players go down…

Here is the list of movies:

FANTASIA
FANTASIA 2000
THE LION KING
BAMBI
CINDERELLA
LADY AND THE TRAMP
THE LITTLE MERMAID
PETER PAN
THE JUNGLE BOOK
101 DALMATIANS
SLEEPING BEAUTY
PINOCCHIO
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
SNOW WHITE

The first movie to be released will be Snow White on October 6th, followed by 2 new releases every year. I expect this number of releases to jump when they see the money making potential..

Construction of Disney's Hawaii Resort Photos

The Walt Disney Co. plans to build a family resort in Hawaii, but it won’t be an island Disneyland. The 21 acres of oceanfront property on the western side of Oahu will house an 800-room hotel complex.

The resort, Disney’s first without a nearby theme park, will emphasize family-centered vacations while respecting Hawaii’s culture, said Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo.

“It will give our guests another way to visit a place that they’ve loved for many years,” Rasulo said. “As the crossroads of Asia, it is your diverse culture that makes this place so special.”

Disney spent $144 million to buy the land at the Ko Olina development, near the existing J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa.

Disney has several themed resort hotels near Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida, but it has never built a hotel resort that will stand on its own. Hawaii has no full-scale amusement park.

Rasulo said there were no plans to expand the resort into a theme park.

“This decision and project really enhances our state’s reputation as a family destination,” said Gov. Linda Lingle. “That’s what we are, and the Disney name brings that to everyone’s mind, front and center.”

The hotel complex is expected to create 1,000 jobs along the island’s Leeward coast, an area known as much for its homelessness as for its breezy beaches.

“When our families go home, they will know much more about Hawaii,” Rasulo said. “To call it a hotel would be a vast understatement of what we’re trying to achieve.”
