China Approves Disney Theme Park in Shanghai

After a courtship of about 20 years, the Walt Disney Company has won approval from the central government of China to build a Disneyland-style theme park in Shanghai, Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, said Tuesday.

The agreement for a Shanghai Disneyland is a landmark deal that carries enormous cultural and financial implications. Analysts estimate the initial park — not including hotels and resort infrastructure — will cost $3.5 billion, making it one of the largest-ever foreign investments in China.

The initial resort, with a mix of shopping areas, hotels and a Magic Kingdom-style theme park, will sprawl across 1,000 acres of the city’s Pudong district — with the theme park occupying about 100 of those acres. It would be a little bigger than Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and on par with the parks in Paris and Tokyo. It is expected to open in five or six years.

Disney’s plans are ambitious: If further development of the resort happens as expected over the coming decades — still a big if — it will encompass more than 1,700 acres and have a capacity rivaling Disney World in Florida, which attracts about 45 million annual visitors.

The company’s goal is to create an engine that will drive demand among China’s 1.3 billion residents for other Disney products, from video games to Broadway-style shows to DVDs. Disney typically relies on the creation of new Disney TV channels to pump its brand abroad, but China’s limits on foreign media have made that impossible. The approval, notably, did not come with concessions from China on the television front.

Mr. Iger called the approval “a very significant milestone” in a statement, taking care to praise China as “one of the most dynamic, exciting and important countries in the world.” A spokeswoman declined to elaborate on details. Throwing open its doors to such a uniquely American — and permanent — entertainment experience is a milestone for China, which has aggressively protected its culture from Westernization in general and Hollywood in particular. Only 20 non-Chinese films are allowed to be shown in theaters each year, for instance, and those are often edited.

Girl Injured at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

A 4-year-old girl was injured at Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness resort when a golf cart she was riding overturned.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reports that the girl was riding with her father, 37-year-old Charles Wickt, in their personal golf cart Saturday night when the small vehicle overturned, partially pinning the girl underneath. Wickt told authorities he had swerved to avoid another cart that was driving toward them without lights.

The girl reportedly suffered injuries to her neck, head and face. She was transported by helicopter to an Orlando hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

The crash remains under investigation.

8 Things Disney Parks Have Banned

Very funny list from Mental Floss on the 8 Things Disney Parks have Banned.

Disney may be the Happiest Place on Earth, but don’t think that means you can just waltz in and do whatever you want. In fact, Mickey Mouse’s theme parks have banned quite a few things over the years. Here are just a few of the things on which the Mouse has dropped his hammer.

1. Long Hair

Until the late 1960s, men could either have flowing locks or enjoy Adventureland, but they definitely couldn’t do both. According to Snopes, if a long-haired fellow tried to buy a ticket, a cast member would discreetly and politely inform the man that his hairdo didn’t jive with the park’s unwritten dress code before escorting him from the park.

2. Facial Hair

It’s tough to find a picture of Walt Disney without a mustache, but for decades it was even tougher to find a Disney employee who had a ‘stache of his own. Starting in 1957, workers at Disney parks were not allowed to have long hair, grow beards, or wear mustaches. (The underlying logic was that park patrons wouldn’t want to buy a $9 soda from some filthy bearded hippie or mustachioed Snidely Whiplash type.)

In 2000, Disney was having trouble drumming up enough manpower to staff its parks, so it relaxed the facial hair ban. Employees were finally allowed to grow mustaches, provided they kept them trimmed and groomed. Beards didn’t fare so well, though; they stayed on the forbidden list.

3. Blake Lively

How could anyone not like the cute-as-a-button star of Gossip Girl? Disneyland apparently wasn’t always amused with Lively’s pre-fame antics. According to Lively, when she was six, she and her older brother used the old put-hairspray-on-a-friend’s-readmission-hand-stamp-to-transfer-the-stamp-to-their-own-skin trick. It would have been the perfect crime, except security nabbed the Lively kids right as they went through the park’s turnstiles and slapped the pair with a one-year ban.

This weekend marks the end of Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort.

That means guests only have through Sunday to catch some major features at the two theme parks.

Disneyland introduced a new fireworks show, called “Halloween Screams,” for the season. The show begins at 9:25 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The best place to view the show is in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle. But for the last week, Disneyland also added projections that go along with the show to be seen on mist screens on the Rivers of America in Frontierland.

The 2010 schedule for Disney Institute open enrollment programs is now available at
www.disneyinstitute.com. Located under the Web site’s “Events” tab, the extended calendar offers increased flexibility for professionals who want to book training through the end of the coming year.

Open-enrollment programs include three- and five-day programs available at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., and a series of one-day programs offered at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif. One- and three-day
programs are dedicated to specific topics such as quality service, leadership excellence, people management, brand loyalty, and inspiring creativity. The five-day programs dedicate a day to each of the five core Disney Institute
curricula.

Open-enrollment programs take participants onstage and behind-the-scenes of Disney locations. Meeting with Disney leaders, they discover proven best practices from The Walt Disney Company that are easily adaptable to their
organizations.

“Professional development is more important than ever as businesses look for ways to recover from the recession,” said Jeff James, vice president, Disney Institute. “By making our schedule available for online booking through the
end of next year, we’re helping leaders and managers get the training that they and their teams need to gain a competitive edge.”

Open enrollment programs at Disney Institute are ideal for leaders, managers, small-businesses owners and entrepreneurs looking to incorporate innovative ideas and practices into their organizations. They are also helpful as a
primer for senior corporate executives who have interest in working with Disney Institute on customized solutions for their organizations.

“We make it easy and affordable for anyone – no matter the size of their organization – to learn from our more than 80 years of business experience and incorporate those lessons into their business,” said James.
