Monorail guide warned of hazard when trains backed up without a spotter

The manufacturer of Walt Disney World’s monorail trains warned against the kind of reverse driving that contributed to the system’s first fatal crash this past summer, according to documents obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.

An operating manual written for the Disney trains by Bombardier Inc. warned that driving the vehicles in reverse “is a potentially hazardous operation even under the best conditions” and “strongly recommended” that an observer be stationed at the opposite end of a train whenever one is backing up.

The July 5 accident occurred as a Disney train was supposed to be moving off of the resort’s Epcot loop at the end of a work day, a process that requires the train to move in reverse through a track switch and onto a short spur leading to one of the system’s Magic Kingdom loops. But the track switch was not activated that night, so the train wound up reversing back down the Epcot loop instead, hitting another train and killing the second train’s 21-year-old driver, Austin Wuennenberg of Kissimmee.

At the time of the crash, Disney’s monorail policies did not require that someone be watching the back of the train being driven in reverse. So there was no spotter in place who could have warned the driver that the switch had not moved and the train was backing down the wrong track.

Disney and CBS Signing on to Apple TV Subscription Service?

The Wall Street Journal reports that CBS and Walt Disney are considering participating in an upcoming plan by Apple to offer television subscription services over the Internet.

Apple is hoping to introduce the service in 2010.

The news comes as there is increasing evidence that Apple is looking to revamp its iTunes services. The recent acquisition of Lala Media has raised the possibility that Apple is seriously looking at subscription services as the future for iTunes. This approach is said to also fit in with Apple’s tablet plans, which are being described as “a multimedia gadget” according to The Wall Street Journal‘s sources.

Apple is said to be seeing early resistance, however, from other content providers, potentially limiting the offerings of the service. Content providers seem to be apprehensive about cutting off existing revenue streams depending on the terms of the deal with Apple.

Christmas at Walt Disney World 1978 – Attack of the giant babies

I couldn’t resist posting this video from the guys over at Progress City USA

From the 1978 television special “Christmas at Walt Disney World” comes this horrific spectacle. Professional mime duo Shields & Yarnell provide this heaping dose of nightmare fuel – a truly upsetting bit that has nothing to do with Christmas *or* Walt Disney World.

Witness the horror and wonder how a society that could produce something like this still exists. Or why anyone ever, ever went to Walt Disney World again.

Also note the old strollers that they used to have in the Magic Kingdom. Remember those?

Chavez seeks to rename Venezuela’s Angel Falls – Paradise Falls from UP

Angel Falls at least partially inspired Paradise Falls, the fantasy Latin American waterfall in the recent Disney/Pixar animated film Up.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has called for the world’s highest waterfall, Angel Falls, to be given back its indigenous name.

The falls, which drop nearly 1km (0.6 miles) from a flat-topped mountain in the south of Venezuela, are currently named after a 1930s US aviator.

Jimmy Angel is believed to have been the first outsider to see them.

Mr Chavez said they should be called Kerepakupai-Meru, the name used by the indigenous Pemon people of the area.

Mr Chavez, who accuses the US of plotting against his country, said that thousands of indigenous people had seen the falls before Jimmy Angel “discovered” them.

Captain EO returns to Disneyland

Captain EO, the 3D film starring the late King of Pop Michael Jackson, is returning to Disneyland for a limited time starting in February, Disney announced today.

It’s the first time Disney has confirmed rumors of the films return, rumors that have been flying since shortly after Jackson died in June.

The 17-minute film will return to its original home at the theater inside Tomorrowland, replacing Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, which currently occupies the theater and is expected to close in the next few weeks, Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown said.

Disney officials call it a limited engagement. Brown said how limited has yet to be decided.

This is an entertainment experience that our guests are excited about and were happy to be bringing it back,Brown said.

The film was a mainstay at the park from 1986 to 1997, finally closing after its popularity faded. Jackson also was facing molestation charges, starting in 1993, which prompted some people to question the appropriateness of the film playing inside the family friendly theme park.

When asked about the criminal allegations and whether that was considered in deciding whether to bring it back, Brown would only say: The decision was made based on our guests feedback and there was much guest nostalgia and demand for Captain EO.

(Jackson wont be the only celeb to make it back to Disneyland. Just today, an updated, robotic Mr. Lincoln again started performing. To learn more, click here.)

A powerhouse team from the entertainment industry created Captain EO,including Star Wars creator George Lucas, who served as executive producer. It was directed by Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, with music from film composer James Horner and from Jackson.

Press reports said the film cost an estimated $17 million to $30 million to make.
