Christmas Events for 2010 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Christmas Events for 2010 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Over the next few days we will be covering Christmas 2010 Events at the Walt Disney World Resort. Up next is the Hollywood Studios Park.

Spectacle of Dancing Lights – Millions of brilliant bulbs blanket the backlot with dancing lights and animated displays synchronized to high-energy holiday tunes at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Nov. 8, 2010, through Jan. 3, 2011.

Colorful wreaths, twirling carousels, flying angels and Santa and his reindeer bedazzle park-goers amid swirling snow flurries during The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, a megawatt, multi-colored spectacle that Show Director John Phelan calls “the ultimate Americana Holiday lights display.”

“Imagine it,” Phelan said.  “One private citizen (Jennings Osborne), overwhelmed by the spirit of the season, created his own ‘Holiday Wonderland,’ complete with a giant rotating globe with ‘Peace on Earth’ above it and a massive canopy of red lights that people could walk under.  He said he wanted the people to feel like they were inside the lights, looking out.  Only in America!”

In fact, originally it was only in Little Rock, at the home of Arkansas businessman Jennings Osborne.  The rich tradition began some 20 years ago when he strung 1,000 lights as a Christmas gift to his daughter.  After the exhibit grew larger and brighter – into millions of lights – it was transported to Walt Disney World Resort in 1995, where the light display now delights guests from all over the world each year.

New food stand opens in Downtown Disneyland

New food stand opens in Downtown Disneyland

Great news from by Sarah Tully on Around Disney at the OC Register.

Downtown Disney visitors now have a new option for a to-go meal or sweet treat: crepes.

A new stand, called Café Renee, opened July 2 near the World of Disney store and the theme park entrances, said Betsy Sanchez, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman. The location sells “sweet” and “savory” crepes, as well as funnel cake sticks.

Café Renee originally was supposed to open around Christmastime, but it was delayed because modifications needed to be made to the kiosk, Sanchez said.

The stand offers five varieties of sweet crepes, including fruit and nutella, and three savory types, including pulled pork and ham and cheese. The price ranges from $5.50 to $9.50. A scoop of vanilla ice cream can be added for $1.

A clerk said that the biggest seller is the nutella crepe, which comes with the chocolate-nutty spread, powdered sugar and whipped cream. The funnel cake sticks, which can come with fruit, ice cream or dips, also are popular.

Toy Story 3 fan changes name to Buzz Lightyear

Toy Story 3 fan changes name to Buzz Lightyear

Interesting article from the Metro.

A man called Steve Bolton has changed his name to Buzz Lightyear to celebrate the release of Pixar’s Toy Story 3.

The 26-year-old from West Bromwich, who’s a mechanic by trade, is certain beyond doubt that his girlfriend will get a buzz out of it.

He told The Sun: ‘I’m a massive fan of Toy Story and Buzz is a great name. ‘My girlfriend is going to love telling people she’s going out with Buzz Lightyear. ‘I hope kids will ask me for my autograph. It’s going to feel great signing my name and introducing myself to people.’

Umm ok…

Disney Picks Pixar’s Brains for Muppets Movie

Disney Picks Pixar's Brains for Muppets Movie

The Muppets are getting Pixar-lated.

Principals involved with Disney’s upcoming live-action picture starring Jason Segel flew to Pixar headquarters in Emeryville, Calif., on Wednesday for a table read of the project.

This is the second recent example of the animation house assisting its Disney parent with a live-action feature after it helped shape reshoots for the upcoming sci-fi tentpole “Tron Legacy.”

Some of the members of the so-called “Pixar Brain Trust” — filmmakers John Lasseter, Brad Bird , Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, Michael Arndt, Bob Peterson and president Ed Catmull — were there for the consultations. On the Disney side, Muppets director James Bobin and producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman were likely in the room along with Segel. Neither Pixar nor Disney would comment.

Beyond whatever advice might have come down for the project at hand, the fact that Pixar has its fingers in the Muppets pie suggests that Disney, under the new regime of Rich Ross and Sean Bailey, is intent on taking advantage of its subsidiary’s storytelling abilities.

Pixar still is batting 1.000 with critics and commercially, with “Toy Story 3” being its 11th hit in a row. The film has grossed $366.9 million since its June 18 release, becoming the top domestic grosser of the year, surpassing the $334.2 million collected by Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland.” (Worldwide, “Alice” still is far ahead with $1.02 billion in grosses; the global tally for “Toy” stands at $634.4 million as its international rollout continues.)

At the same time, the new Disney regime has been hampered by a string of underperformers — “When in Rome,” “The Last Song,” “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and the just-opened misfire “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” — that it inherited from the studio’s previous administration.

Despite his success at the Disney Channels, Ross has no feature filmmaking experience, and Bailey, though seasoned as a producer, is new to top studio management. The new Disney team is eager to avail itself of Pixar’s expertise — and the filmmakers involved don’t appear to harbor any reluctance about taking advice from Pixar, either.

Christmas Events for 2010 at Disney’s Magic Kingdom

Over the next few days I am going to breakdown all the events happening at the Walt Disney World Resort for the Christmas holidays. First up is the Magic Kingdom.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – On 19 magical nights between Nov. 8 and
Dec. 19, holiday revelers can sip cocoa, catch a “snowflake” on a fingertip and catch the spirit of the season through enchanting entertainment that includes live shows, fireworks, carolers and special character meet and greets.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, which kicks off at 7 p.m. on select evenings (after regular Magic Kingdom closing), is pure, time-honored Disney magic:

Dancing gingerbread, marching soldiers and Santa’s sleigh parade down Main Street, U.S.A. to seasonal melodies during the twice-nightly “Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade” … Cinderella Castle is draped radiantly with 200,000 glistening white lights … and “Holiday Wishes, Celebrate the Spirit of the Season” fireworks lights the night sky during a pyrotechnics show orchestrated to holiday melodies.

The night wouldn’t be complete without the forecasted flurry of snowflakes along Main Street, U.S.A. and a warming cup of cocoa in hand.  Party-goers also enjoy complimentary cookies and apple slices and enjoy unlimited admission to favorite attractions.

This after-hours family-friendly outing takes place Nov. 8, 11, 12, 16, 18, 19, 28, 30 and Dec. 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17 and 19.  The evening kicks off at 7 p.m. and continues until midnight.  Day-of-party ticket pricing is $59.95 ($53.95 for ages 3-9).  Advance tickets are available with $6 savings for most dates.  Guests can visit Disneyworld.com/christmasparty or call 407/W-DISNEY.

Castle Dream Lights – When daylight has passed during the holiday season, Magic Kingdom guests can behold a breathtaking transformation during the Castle Dream Lights ceremony.  Each evening Nov. 8, 2010, through Jan. 3, 2011, Cinderella and favorite characters decked out in holiday garb take to the stage and magically transform Cinderella Castle into an ice palace aglow with 200,000 white lights – a perfect centerpiece to a park all decked out with wreaths, bows, garland and towering Christmas trees.

Disneyland’s Alice in Wonderland ride closed to install safety equipment

Disneyland's Alice in Wonderland ride closed to install safety equipment

One of Disneyland’s oldest attractions, the Alice in Wonderland ride, has been closed since last week while workers install safety barriers recommended by California work-safety inspectors. Park officials said they hope to reopen the ride in the next few weeks.

Disney officials said the Anaheim park voluntarily closed the ride July 15 after California Department of Occupational Safety and Health inspectors pointed out that it lacked handrails needed for maintenance crews who work on an elevated segment of the ride.

The Cal/OSHA inspectors were in the park on a separate matter and did not order closure of the ride, Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown said. “We like to have all of our rides ready for our guests,” she said.

The ride, which opened in 1958, takes guests on rail-guided cars that resemble caterpillars into a dark tunnel that features glowing characters from Disney’s 1951 animated version of the Lewis Carroll classic. Toward the end of the ride, the cars roll outside, along an elevated rail segment with no handrails or barriers to prevent maintenance workers from falling off.

Five Things We’ll Miss the Most About Star Tours

Five Things We'll Miss the Most About Star Tours

A very sad but interesting article from OC Weekly talking about what we will miss most from Star Tours.

The Star Tours attraction at both Disneyland and Disney World will be closing for renovations–which means, yes, we’ll have to soon say good-bye to the daily express tourist ship to Endor. Instead, we’ll be boarding Starspeeders “in a high-speed pod race through the desert canyons of Tatooine.” Which also means, yes, Star Tours 2.0 will include scenes from the prequels.

Star Tours’ final flights at Disneyland will take place on July 26, but let’s savor our favorite parts about the original attraction until then. Who knows: Maybe these features will still be there when the ride re-opens again in about a year, but more than likely with the new Phantom Menace-y storyline in place… they won’t.
