Disneyland’s oldest entertainment – Disneyland Band

Disneyland’s oldest entertainment - Disneyland Band

When Disneyland opened in 1955, there was lots of entertainment. One group stayed with the park and is still there every day: the Disneyland Band.

The band was originally hired for a two-week run, but has stayed.

The band has a repertoire of more than 400 musical numbers and has marched more than 3,500 miles marching around the park, according to the Disney Parks blog.

Members of the band will many times play in smaller groups, depending on the season and needs of the park. The two current smaller groups are the Hook & Ladder Co., which plays on Main Street U.S.A., and the Royal Street Bachelors in New Orleans Square.

The band also performs in annual music education concerts for almost 40,000 second graders from local schools between January and March and has staged the concerts for more than 1 million students since they began 27 years ago.

The concerts are based on California education standards and staged in a partnership with the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Friends of the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.

Will Angelina Jolie wake Sleeping Beauty?

With “Maleficent,” the postmodern take on “Sleeping Beauty,” gaining momentum at Disney, there’s also a star who could be surging with it: Angelina Jolie.

Earlier this week, the news broke that Disney had hired its longtime collaborator Linda Woolverton (“Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King”) to work on the screenplay for the live-action take on the 50-year-old hit. (Maleficent is the evil fairy godmother in the Disney film; this story would be told, “Wicked”-like, from her perspective.)

Both Tim Burton and Angelina Jolie had last spring been rumored to join the project, which Disney has been kicking around for a while as a way to mine its library, among other things. Burton’s involvement remains unclear as he contemplates several projects. But sources say that, as of the last few weeks, Jolie is keen on the film and would like to sign on to play the titular villain.

There’s no deal (or, for that matter, script) yet. And it’s unclear if Jolie’s involvement would be conditional on Burton moving forward with it too. But it’s nonetheless notable that Jolie — who has no new movie after shooting the international thriller “The Tourist” — is actively engaging with the material and could, according to sources, very well star in the film when all is said and done.

A Disney spokesman this week said the company would not comment on anything “Maleficent”-related. Jolie manager Geyer Kosinski could not be reached for comment Thursday.

A quick primer on Maleficent: The wicked fairy godmother is the character who casts the original spell on Sleeping Beauty (a.k.a. Princess Aurora, quoth Wikipedia) that the young girl will prick herself on a splinter and die; Maleficent is an archrival of sorts to the good fairy godmother, who casts a counter-spell that says the girl will sleep for a century and then be awakened by the kiss of a prince. The original versions of the fairy tale don’t name Maleficent; the character was named and shaped by Disney for its 1959 film, and would of course be deepened and amplified for this one.

Disneyworld ‘Tron-orail’ divides Disney faithful

One of Walt Disney World’s monorail trains has undergone a radical makeover.

The familiar, single-striped paint job has been replaced by the image of a motorcycle set against a blue background on the front cab — with a shimmering trail of light that extends the length of the train.

The flashy ad display, which debuted earlier this month, is part of the Walt Disney Co.’s early marketing campaign for Tron: Legacy, the big-budget sequel to the 1982 cult classic that will serve as the company’s winter-holiday movie release later this year.

It’s also the first time Disney World has wrapped any of its monorail trains — one of the resort’s most widely recognized symbols — with advertising that promotes something beyond the theme parks.

And it has proved astonishingly polarizing.

Though many Disney fans have been gushing over the sleek look, many others are criticizing the company in online fan forums for turning one of Disney World’s most universally recognized symbols into a 200-foot advertisement.

Some fans have even taken their displeasure to Disney’s company-run theme-park blog.

“Never thought I’d see the day that Disney would bus-wrap their monorails to advertise for a movie,” one commenter wrote. “What’s next, billboards on Cinderella Castle?” added another.

The backlash underscores the balancing act that faces Disney as it searches for new and more ways to use its theme parks to promote its movies, television shows and time shares without antagonizing its uniquely passionate — and vocal — fan base.

I’m catching a full run of the show this weekend and I promise to share some additional images on the blog and on our Facebook page. In the meantime, let us know which Disney villain you’re most looking forward to seeing in “Villains Tonight!”

‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ International Trailer

Walt Disney Pictures has released an international trailer for Nicolas Cage’s ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ film. The film is set to release this summer, July 16, 2010. For more information about the movie look below.

Walt Disney Studios, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub, the creators of the “National Treasure” franchise, present THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE — an innovative and epic comedy adventure about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center of an ancient conflict between good and evil.

Balthazar Blake (NICOLAS CAGE) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (ALFRED MOLINA).  Balthazar can’t do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (JAY BARUCHEL), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness.  It’ll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE. The screenplay is by Matt Lopez and Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard from a screen story by Matt Lopez and Larry Konner & Mark Rosenthal.

Disney off the Beaten Path: Spending Eternity at the Happiest Place on Earth

No, don’t be alarmed:  Disney hasn’t gone into the funeral business, although if they did, rest assured there would be takers.   But it just so happens that some die-hard  (I’m keeping the pun) Disney fans have taken matters into their own hands and decided that spending eternity at the happiest place on earth is a great idea.   I discovered this recently when an acquaintance of mine, a huge Disney fan, confided in me that her father’s ashes had been scattered “Somewhere in Disney World.”  When I inquired where, she only assured me that it was in a very private place and not in the parks.  I figured this was a fluke, but when I did some research, I discovered numerous reports about spreading a loved one’s ashes in Disney parks, part of a trend that began in the late 90s and is prevalent enough today that Disney reportedly has special cleaning crews, armed with vacuums capable of picking up dust and bone fragments, for such occasions.

So is it true?  Well, Disney won’t say for sure and really, I can’t blame them.  It’s a rather depressing subject for such a happy place.  Officially, Disney gets a handful of requests a year to scatter a loved-one’s ashes in the parks, which they turn down.  Unofficially, it happens,  just like Flash Mountain (people flashing when the camera takes their photo on Splash Mountain) happens. Disney can’t stop everything and there are only so many cameras.  And really, what’s the harm?   They either wash away in the rain or are cleaned up.  Topping the list in popularity is, not surprisingly, The Haunted Mansion, followed by Pirates of the Caribbean and It’s a Small World.  The latter, presumably, for that pesky mother-in-law you’ve just got to stick it to one last time.

As for my friend, her father had always loved Fort Wilderness and the family had been going there every few years since it opened.  It was a special place where she watched her little brother learn to walk and where her mom didn’t have to cook dinner.  Once, both sets of grandparents were able to join them, the one time they all vacationed together.  And her dad often talked about buying an RV when he retired and staying there during the colder months, but that didn’t happen.  When he got sick, they didn’t plan for his funeral; it was too much for the family to think about.  When he died, not of his disease but suddenly, of complications related to it, the family traded doing something meaningful for simply gertting through it.  It wasn’t until a year after he passed away that her brother got the idea of spreading their dad’s ashes at Disney World.   It first it became a bit of a joke, but the more they talked about it, the more it began to make sense.

I asked my friend if it was odd going back knowing that her dad’s ashes were there.  She said no, that it was comforting.    Knowing that he was at one of his favorite places gave them peace, more so now that all of them are living in different parts of the country.  They’ll  always go back to  Disney World, she explained.   While I may frown at the idea of dusting Pirates with your Great Aunt Alice, I found their story very touching.   I understand why Disney doesn’t allow it, but this story and others like it gave people comfort.  It meant something to them. And for that, I think they can be forgiven for bending the rules a bit.

Disclaimer  Mumbo-Jumbo:  Chip and Co doesn’t endorse breaking any rules at Disney World. We don’t even re-use refillable mugs. Who, us?  We don’t even know what a refillable mug is.

Nuclear plant shutdown saps some of Disney World’s power

Problems at a nuclear power plant on Florida’s Gulf coast have created a bit of a headache for Walt Disney World.

Progress Energy’s nuclear plant in Crystal River has been shut down since late last year, after workers in the midst of a maintenance project discovered a crack in the containment wall that surrounds the facility’s reactor building

That has in turn left Disney World’s semi-autonomous government, the Reedy Creek Improvement District, scrambling. About 10 percent of the district’s power is generated at the nuclear plant, which is about 100 miles northwest of Disney World.
