Disney off the Beaten Path: Disney for People Who Hate Disney World.

Okay, I know you’re out there, the guy who doesn’t like Disney World.  Maybe you found this place because someone’s dragging you to the World and you’re trying to figure out how to get out of it.  I do feel for you.  No really.  And I feel bad for the person who’s taking you as well.  While it can be amusing to watch your annoying brother-in-law squirm in the hot Florida sun as hundreds of sticky little kids swarm by violating his precious personal space (and oh by the way, why can’t I get a decent cup of coffee around here?!), no one wants to spend their vacation with someone who is, dare I say it, Grumpy.

I’ll admit that it’s possible you have some valid reasons for your antipathy towards the happiest place on earth beyond the fact that you’re a miserable killjoy (I kid. Really).  Maybe you went and had a terrible time. It was hot and crowded. You spent a lot of money. The kids whined a lot and the grandparents gave them way too much sugar.  You swore you’d never set foot on Disney property again and now here you are, going again. So what are you going to do about it?

Well, there’s a lot you can do. First, get rid of the idea that Disney World is for kids. There’s literally something for everyone. Second, do something that you want to do.  Here are a few ideas to make your torturous journey, um, I mean vacation, a little happier for everyone:

 1.  Try to go when it’s the least crowded. If that’s not possible, use a touring plan.  They really do work.

 2.  You’re being a good sport, right?  Reward yourself with a game of golf or even a bit of fishing right on Disney property. You can also rent little small watercraft (like double jet-skis, only slower) in front of the Polynesian Resort at at the Boardwalk.

 3.  Have a spa day. Disney’s Saratoga Springs Spa is often cited as one of the best spas in the Southeast; the Grand Floridian also has a spa. The spa at the Ritz-Carlton, a few miles off Disney property, is expensive but worth every penny.

 4.  Hire a sitter or take the in-laws up on their offer to watch the kids and have a night out with your spouse. After a few days, you probably need a break from the kids as much as they’ll need one from you. California Grill is an obvious choice for a great meal on Disney property, but if you want quiet and fewer kids, try Citricos in the Grand Floridian or Artist’s Point at the Wilderness Lodge. If you really want some grown-up time, try Victoria’s and Alberts. Not only is it blissfully child-free, it’s also consistently named one of the best restaurants in Florida.

 5.  Be a hero and be the one who takes the little ones back to the room for the mid-day break. No one needs to know that you’re getting a nap too. Show up with the refreshed tot just in time for dinner.

 6.  Go off by yourself. If you’re staying on Disney property, take advantage of Extra Magic Hours at night and leave your spouse and the kids back in the room (no need for a sitter) while you explore on your own. Disney parks are safe and especially beautiful at night and often considerably less crowded. Drink around the world in Epcot–and take the bus back to your resort. Switch off with your wife the next night. You’ll be surprised how much fun time the parks can be without stragglers and obligations to others in your party. Go see the Christmas lights at the Wilderness Lodge or head on over the The Boardwalk and people watch; if you’re there long enough, a wedding might even break out.

7.  Take a day off from the theme parks. You’re right in the middle of everything in Central Florida. Head over to the coast and hit the beach or go to the Kennedy Space Center. You get extra points for injecting an educational experience into your kids’ vacation.

8.  Don’t try to do everything. The world won’t end if you can’t get a Fastpass for Soarin’ or if your youngest is really afraid of Mickey and won’t let you get a picture. Don’t be the guy in front of Mickey’s Philharmagic yelling at your three-year old because he wouldn’t eat his Figaro Fries. Why was that guy yelling? Chances are he’s a nice guy, but he’s stressed out and hot and the kids are overwhelmed. Time to remember that it’s a vacation and relax. Some of the best moments I’ve had at Disney World have been just riding the monorail and talking to a stranger about his grandkid’s first ride or sitting on a bench at closing (the parks actually stay open about an hour after the attractions close) with my best friend watching the castle turn colors and telling funny non-Disney stories while everyone else rushes out of the park.

9.  If you’re travelling with extended family or a large group, agree ahead of time that you won’t spend all your time together. Instead, on some days arrange to go off in smaller groups and meet up for later dinner. It’s amazing to me how many family arguments are started because no one can agree on the same activity for the day.

 10.  Put together a good plan; know when to throw it out. I’ve travelled around Europe with little more than a Eurailpass and a vague idea of where I wanted to go next, but I never go to Disney without making at least a couple advanced dining reservations, an idea of when the parks open/close, and who has Extra Magic Hours. You won’t regret spending a small amount of time figuring out fastpasses, learning about on-site transportation, or making advanced dining reservations a few months before you go.

Now go and have fun! You might just surprise yourself.

This post is dedicated to all the Disney-hating brothers-in-law in the world .  You know who you are.

LittleBigPlanet Gets Incredibles In April

Interesting news from Kotaku:

It may not be the timeliest of additions to the LittleBigPlanet virtual closet, but Sackboys and Sackgirls will get some Pixar-designed clothing choices this week. Nine new costumes from The Incredibles hit the PlayStation Store this Thursday.

The Incredibles costumes pack features the five costumes you see above, plus a “Retro” Mr. Incredible get up, plus one each based on Frozone, Edna Mode and arch-nemesis Syndrome. They look way better than those recent Sonic the Hedgehog costumes, don’t they? They do.

Those Incredibles outfits hit alongside the Incredibles Level Kit, featuring locations from the animated movie, plus a pair of April Fools “Fragrances Costumes.” That sounds like some LittleBigPlanet inside joke that I don’t get, so would someone care to explain it to me?

Update: Whoops! Despite the PlayStation.blog highlighting “This Week In DLC,” it appears The Incredibles costume and level pack won’t be out until April 8! 🙁

Disney Online Honors Winner of Pixiehollow.com Fairy House Design Contest

Winning Design Revealed During Special Celebration at 17th Annual Epcot® International Flower and Garden Festival.

Disney Online announced today the winner of its “Design a Fairy House Art Contest,” which ran in February on the popular online world for girls, Disney Fairies Pixie Hollow (www.PixieHollow.com). The fairy house, inspired by 15-year-old winning designer, Zoe P., from Frazier Park, Calif., was revealed during a special ceremony on April 3 in the Pixie Hollow Garden at the 17th Annual Epcot® International Flower and Garden Festival.  Zoe and her family were in attendance to celebrate the momentous occasion, as the fairy house will be on display for the duration of the festival.

The winning house design was selected by DisneyToon Studios filmmakers, currently working on the upcoming “Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue,” coming to Disney Blu-ray and DVD this Fall.  Director Brad Raymond, and the film’s Producer, Helen Kalafatic, attended the celebration to personally congratulate the winner, meet with Tinker Bell fans and sign autographs.

“We were thrilled to honor Zoe and her winning design at this very special celebration,” said Jason Everett, Disney Fairies Pixie Hollow product director. “This contest offered the Pixie Hollow community an exciting opportunity to utilize their love for Disney Fairies as inspiration to create their very own fairy house art design.  To see that design come to life and be featured in the Epcot® International Flower and Garden Festival is truly a delight for everyone.”

To date, over 575 Disney Fairies books and over 125 Tinker Bell movie books have published worldwide in 60 countries and 35 languages, selling nearly 18 million copies; Disney Fairies magazines have sold over 7.5 million copies in 28 countries and an array of products from apparel and toys to electronics, home décor and stationery has extended storylines into many girls’ homes across the globe. DisneyFairies.com is now available in more than 20 territories across North America, Latin America, EMEA and Asia Pacific.  Fans have created more than 25 million personalized Fairy avatars to date that can take flight in the virtual world of Pixie Hollow. Disney theme parks have also launched a Pixie Hollow attraction where fans can meet the Disney Fairies. Following the success of Walt Disney Pictures Tinker Bell on Disney Blu-ray and hi-def DVD, Disney released Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure as the second title in the series in October 2009. The Disney Fairies are highlighted in the production of Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy, and additionally, Tinker Bell is in four other Disney On Ice shows touring the world.

Disney puts "Tron Legacy" sequel in motion

“Tron Legacy” isn’t due until December, but Disney already is putting a sequel on its monorail track.

Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, the “Lost” writers/co-executive producers who worked on “Legacy,” have begun writing a sequel to the studio’s sci-fi tentpole.

No details have been released because it is so early in the process. Notwithstanding the question of whether the movie will be a hit, other topics to ponder are whether the sequel will focus on spinoff characters or center on a new adventure set in the “Tron” world. Insiders have suggested that Kitsis and Horowitz are working on a way to round the story into a trilogy.

No deals have been made with “Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski or cast members to return, though options were placed in the original deals, and Disney surely would hope to reunite all the elements if “Legacy” proves to be a hit.

Buzz and Woody to be Featured at Disneyland Resort Paris

Buzz and Woody to be Featured at Disneyland Resort Paris

As the date for Pixar’s Toy Story 3 Movie draws closer and closer Disneyland Resort Paris is ramping up for the release. The official word is that Woody and Pals are part of the New Generation Festival which sees a host of film characters transferring from the big screen to real life to take part in this year long celebration.

Woody and his Space Ranger friend Buzz will now be familiar faces on the French version of Main Street, USA, and they are certainly not alone. Love-able rats Remy and his portly brother Emile from Ratatouille have been plucked from the big screen along with Stitch, Sulley from Monsters Inc and some of the The cast of the Incredibles.

Here is some more information from a post I made last month with video that goes into more detail about New Generations Festival.

DLRP Magic.com shares some more info:

Join the festival-fun at the all-new generation shows and parades – where new Princess Tiana jazzes up the Once Upon a Dream Parade, and gourmet chef Remy drives you wild with excitement in Disney’s Stars ‘n’ Cars. Or choo-choo-choose which star to meet first on the Disney all stars express and at Monsters Inc. Scream Academy — shriek ‘n’ greet like no other!

And, starting from Summer, shrink to the size of a toy in Toy Story Playland for the BIGGEST new family attractions: Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop, Slinky Dog Zigzag Spin and RC Racer.

Finally, gather in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle for a true Disney showstopper finale — an all-singing, all-dancing, all-together perfect end to the perfect day.

The Disney new generation festival might only last a year but your all-new memories will last a lifetime.

Is it Joss Whedon Or Peter Sollett To Direct 'Runaways' For Disney Marvel

I am getting conflicting reports on who Marvel wants to direct their upcoming film Runaways. Here are a few articles I found talking about both Joss Whedon & Peter Sollett who are in negotiations..So we will see who gets it

This article comes to us from MTV:

The Avengers” isn’t the only Marvel Studios project that Joss Whedon is currently linked to — based on one report, it appears that the “Astonishing X-Men” writer could run away with the big-screen adaptation of “Runaways.”

According to Access Hollywood, Whedon is on a short-list to direct “Runaways,” based on the comic book series created by “Y: The Last Man” scribe Brian K. Vaughan.

But Whedon isn’t the only leading contender, as Deadline offers the conflicting report that “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” director Peter Sollett is in negotiations to direct the superhero project.

“Runaways” focuses on an unlikely alliance forged between several youngsters after they learn that their parents are the founding members of a super villain group. Once the discovery is made, the kids — sorceress Nico Minoru, arrogant Chase Stein, alien Karolina Dean, mutant Molly Hayes, raptor-handler Gertie Yorkes and brilliant Alex Wilder — run away together, only to find themselves pursued by their parents and other super-powered individuals.

io9 is reporting that Marvel wants Peter 🙂

Sounds like the Runaways comic might actually get immortalized on the big screen, since Marvel is finally looking at a director. The spawn-of-supervillains epic has the makings of a high-energy super-powered teen action flick, with an angsty John Hughes twist.

According to Deadline Marvel wants Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist director, Peter Sollett, to adapt the tortured but amazing Runaways graphic novels. Which sounds like a good fit, since Sollett has experience telling the stories of teenagers in a realistic fashion.

Brian K. Vaughn’s Runaways series follows the children of a super-powered crime ring that has total control over L.A. Ashamed of their parents’ evil ways, the kids run away from home before eventually confronting their parents. But even this confrontation doesn’t free the teens from living in the shadows of their parents’ mistakes.

Either way I think it is going to be a good movie both Directors are great but Joss is by far my favorite ever since Firefly. Which reminds me they need to bring back Firefly!
