Quiz: Is the Disney Dining Plan for You?

Quiz: Is the Disney Dining Plan for You?

Quiz: Is the Disney Dining Plan for You?

“Save up to 30% on Walt Disney World dining costs with the Disney Dining Plan.” That’s how Disney advertises one of its dining plans. With the dining plans accepted at over 100 different restaurants at Walt Disney World, how can you go wrong?  In my case, it can be summed up in two words. Marital Harmony.

Disney Dining Plan Basics

Purchase dining credits to use at Walt Disney World restaurants, character dining, dinner shows, and even private in-room dining through one of Disney’s dining plans. Depending on the plan you purchase the dining credits will be for a combination of snacks (think water, Mickey ice cream bars, or even cupcakes), table-service restaurants, and quick-service (counter-service) locations; you’ll receive credits for every day of your Magic Your Way Package stay. The Disney dining plans offer significant savings on the cost of food provided. Notable restrictions on dining plans are gratuities and alcohol. My favorite feature of the dining plans is the ability to use credits in any order and combination that suits you. If you go hog wild and use all your snack credits on the first day, no one will say no though you may wish they had.

Here’s a summary of the three most common plans. The plan that fits my family best, Disney Dining Plan, offers one table-service meal, one quick-service meal, and one snack per person per day. Table-service and quick-service meals include an entrée, dessert (for lunch/dinner), and non-alcoholic beverage or a full buffet. The Quick-Service Dining Plan provides guests with two quick-service credits and two snack credits per day. The Disney Deluxe Dining Plan is truly deluxe. Enjoy two table-service meals, one quick-service meal, and two snacks each day. With the Deluxe Dining Plan, table-service meals add an appetizer.

Quiz

Here’s a little quiz (based on the Disney Dining Plan) to help you decide if you should skip the Disney dining plans*.

Each question has the same answer bank:

  1. Always
  2. Never
  3. Sometimes, but not on vacation

You’re at a local buffet and have had your fill but want to make sure you get your money’s worth. Do you mosey back up for a third plate?

One of the most frequent complaints I hear about the dining plans is that there is too much food. Generally, Disney World offers well-portioned entrees – you won’t leave feeling hungry. Add a dessert to lunch and dinner, plus a daily snack item that may be substantial, and well, I feel ready to burst toward the end of the trip. Sure, I could forego a dessert or two, but if it comes with my dining plan meal, who am I to say no?

Think about how you normally dine at home. Odds are you’ll save money with the dining plans if you normally order a dessert, drink soda instead of water, and prefer a filet over a salad or light pasta dish. But, if using the Disney dining plans means you’re paying for food you normally wouldn’t eat, you may not be saving as much as you think.

A new restaurant has opened in town! While reading the local paper, you notice an advertisement for the restaurant – save 20% off a promotional menu. You’re really in the mood for your favorite burger joint. Do you try the new place instead?

This quiz question focuses on flexibility. We make Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs) for dinner every night but breakfast is usually a pastry and coffee in our room and lunch plans are flexible. Take the basic Disney Dining Plan. With a table-service ADR every evening and breakfast on the go, we pretty much have to use our quick-service for lunch. If that’s what’s required to save 30% on our dining, I’m game. My husband is not. He’ll tell you straight-up, “I’m on vacation.” Translation: I don’t care if we have a credit for a quick-service meal. If I want to have lunch at a table-service location, I want to have lunch at a table-service location.

If you’re willing to give up a little dining flexibility, by all means consider the dining plans. Also, the dining plan is a plus if you want to try new restaurants that may not have fit your budget before.

You decide to try the new place in town but your first choice for the entrée isn’t on the promotional menu. Do you go to Plan B and order something that qualifies for the discount?

My husband is an appetizer man. It doesn’t matter what the appetizer is, one must be ordered. Go figure. We also rarely eat dessert right after dinner. If we do get a dessert at Walt Disney World, we like to try something from one of the bakeries a couple of hours after dinner.

According to the Disney Dining Plan’s “terms and conditions,” appetizers are not included; desserts are. Most people would skip the appetizer and settle on a gorgeous dessert. Is this how it plays out in my family? No. I’ll argue strenuously for ordering the items included on the dining plan. My husband will repeat his mantra of he’s on vacation. To keep the peace, we will pay out of pocket for the appetizer and for a pastry at a World Showcase bakery. I know we could have the dessert from our meal wrapped but who wants to lug leftovers around the park?

Let’s talk snack credit next. By carefully selecting the item you purchase with your snack credit, you can get the most out of your dining plan. Some snacks are large enough to be shared and others can qualify as a satisfying breakfast. I’ll search for snack items that give me the most value for my dollar, my husband won’t – he’ll choose whatever strikes his fancy at the time.  Also, not all goodies we consider a snack qualify for the Disney dining plan. If this is the case, I’ll choose something else. My husband will not.

The ice cream parlor in town has the most decadent hand scooped ice cream sundaes. You drive by and notice the “Buy One, Get the Second Sundae Half Off” sign. You pull in. The rich sundaes are large enough to share and you’re not really all that hungry. Do you buy the second one anyway because it’s half off?

Everyone in your traveling group has to purchase the same Disney dining plan. So, you have to figure out if you’re really purchasing more food than you need (i.e. the second sundae) given your family’s preferences and your vacation plans. We have small children and for reasons I don’t understand, an appetizer is included in the children’s table-service meal. My four year old simply isn’t going to eat an appetizer, his meal, and dessert. Many counter-service meals are large enough to comfortably share which means he doesn’t need his own counter-service meal either. Whether the dining plans make sense for kids, or adults for that matter, depends on circumstances. If I had a nine year old who was a hearty eater, I’m sure I would get my money’s worth with the children’s dining plan but the reality is my four year old just doesn’t eat that much.

What Does It All Mean?

If you answered A (Always) to most questions, it’s a good bet the Disney dining plans are a good choice for your family. If you have a lot of B (Never) and C (Sometimes, but not on vacation) answers, you may want to re-think a decision to purchase a dining plan.

For the record, I answered A for most questions while my husband answered C. For us, saving a few dollars on the dining plans isn’t worth bickering about food and jeopardizing the carefree, relaxed nature of our Walt Disney World trips. We agree to disagree and usually purchase a Tables in Wonderland Membership instead.

*Disclaimer: This quiz was meant to be a bit of fun and to help you think about whether the Disney dining plans are for you. It’s not scientific and there was no control group so please don’t email me about the lack of rigor in quiz design Also, despite my husband’s perceived shortcomings in the area of Disney dining, he is a really great guy!

MLB and Disney Unveil Baseball-Themed Mickey Mouse Statues

Major League Baseball Properties and Disney Consumer Products today unveiled 36 different designs of MLB-themed Mickey Mouse collectible statuettes and related apparel and merchandise in celebration of the 2010 MLB All-Star Week festivities taking place July 9–13 in Anaheim, Calif. as part of a new collaboration between the organizations.  The statuettes are replicas of 7.5 foot tall, life-size statues that will be placed at key Southern California landmarks leading up to the All-Star Game on July 13.
This special line of commemorative collectibles, commissioned in conjunction with MLB and Disney Consumer Products’ licensee Forever Collectibles, will be uniquely decorated with bold graphics featuring logos of each of the 30 MLB Clubs as well as an American League and a National League design.  In addition, four statuettes will feature various All-Star Game themes.  All are available in a 7.5-inch size through MLB.com beginning today and later this month through DisneyStore.com and additional retailers including MLB stadium shops, Walgreens and Dick’s Sporting Goods.  Photos of all variations are available here.

The 36 life-size statues are also decorated using the same logos and designs as the statuettes.  With a height of 7.5 feet and weighing 989 pounds, these MLB-themed statues will begin to appear at landmarks throughout Southern California closer to the 2010 All-Star Game.  Exact locations will be made public at a later date.

“With the All-Star Game returning to Anaheim, now is the perfect time for these two iconic American brands to team up and celebrate the premiere sporting event of the summer,” said Bob DuPuy, President & Chief Operating Officer, Major League Baseball. “These Mickey Mouse statuettes will allow fans of all 30 Clubs to share in the excitement of All-Star Summer even if they can’t make it to Anaheim for the festivities.”

“Baseball and Mickey Mouse really connect families and with the All-Star Game being in our backyard this year, it made perfect sense to combine the magic of Disney with America’s favorite pastime,” said Stephen Teglas, vice president and general manager of Fashion & Home North America at Disney Consumer Products. “We look forward to delighting fans of both brands with our unique products and collectibles.”

In addition to the statuettes, starting next month, fans can obtain a wide variety of merchandise and apparel featuring Major League Baseball and beloved Disney characters, including caps, t-shirts, sweatshirts, drink ware, pins, throws and beach towels.

Values vs. Moderates: Worth The Cost to Upgrade?

Values vs. Moderates: Worth The Cost to Upgrade?

I see this question asked a lot on Disney message boards:  Should I upgrade from a Disney value resort to a moderate resort?   For my money, the answer is easy:  No.  I realize this is an unpopular opinion and it probably makes me sound cheap, but hear me out.  I promise this isn’t entirely about wanting to spend more money in Disney signature restaurants. Okay, maybe it is.  But priorities are important, right?

So what’s the difference between a value and a moderate?  I’m glad you asked:

Theme:  Disney moderates have a more grown-up theme.  If you’re looking for a romantic weekend, Pop Century is probably not the first thing that comes to mind.  All Stars, especially when cheerleading and football competitions are in town, should definitely not be the first thing that comes to mind.  Kids tend to love the values and some adults enjoy the theming, but overall, the moderates are more pleasing to the eye.

ADVANTAGE:  Moderates, but only for those who actually spend time at their resort.

Food:  Moderates resorts have a sit-down restaurant.  These aren’t the type of Disney restaurants you probably go out of your way to go to.  In other words, you’re not going to leave the Contemporary Resort and head over to the Pepper Market for dinner, but if you happen to be staying at the resort, they’re fine.  Values have food courts, which have a lot of variety. They’re also inexpensive and kids like them.

ADVANTAGE:  Values.  I love  Disney food, don’t get me wrong, but the table service restaurants at the moderates aren’t good enough to justify upgrading from a value to a moderate.  And if you’re on the dining plan, are you really going to waste a table service credit on Boatright’s when you can eat at Le Cellier or Boma for the same credit?  No, I didn’t think so.

Rooms:  Moderate rooms run around 314 square feet; values a mere 260.  That amount of space means you can sleep five people instead of four (the fifth using a cot, which costs extra, or a trundle bed depending on the resort) and you’ll get a slightly larger vanity in the bathroom area.   It also means you’ll  have more space for a Pack & Play if you’re traveling with a small child.  Moderates also come with refrigerators.  You’ll have to pay $10 per day to rent a fridge at a value.  If you want to avoid that cost, go to the Disboards and participate in one of their fridge swaps.   It’s a fun way to meet people.

ADVANTAGE:  Tie.  Unless you need to sleep five to a room, that extra 60 square feet isn’t doing much for you.  You’re still getting the same two double beds (some Coronado rooms have queens) and the same sheets as your friends over in the values.  Same pillows too.

Amenities:  While both values and moderates are beautifully landscaped, there’s no denying that the mods have prettier grounds by most standards.  Moderates have slides, hot tubs and more pools.  They also have lounges where you can get an adult beverage and enjoy (fairly tame) nighttime entertainment.   In addition, moderates have adequate fitness centers if you’re thus inclined.

ADVANTAGE:  Moderates, but again, it depends on how much time  you’ll be spending at your resort.

Transportation:  I’m going to just call this one a tie.   Both levels of resorts have adequate bus service and I would be hard pressed to find a huge difference between value and moderate buses.

Service:   You’re going to get the same Disney service at a value as you will at a deluxe.  I secretly think that  Disney value cast members are kind of like the smart but akward girl at the Sadie Hawkins dance:  They try harder because they’re the underdog.  Not that I know anything about that sort of thing.  Ahem.  Move along, nothing to see here!

ADVANTAGE:  Tie.  They’re both good.

Cost:  Okay, so if you’re discounting cost entirely, you’re probably going to pick a moderate, but in the real world that’s really not an option, so let’s discuss numbers.  A week in November at Pop in a standard room runs a reasonable $849.  A standard room at Caribbean Beach Resort is $1361 for that same week, a difference of $512. That’s a big difference and only you can decide if the nicer amenities and theming are worth it.  Do you spend enough time in your room to justify that cost?

But perhaps you need the extra space.  Maybe you’re like me and you have a family of five.  What do you do then?  Well, I might just rent a second room at a value or go with a value suite.  In both cases,  I’ll pay just a bit more than for a moderate  but I’ll get a lot of extra space, room for the adults to spread out after the kids go to bed, and an extra bathroom.  Even more likely, I’d probably rent points from a private owner at a Disney Vacation Club property.  That same week in November at Villas at Animal Kingdom Lodge costs 153 points for a one-bedroom, which comes out at around $1530 for the week assuming I pay the standard $10 per point, less if I find an owner who wants to unload points on short notice.   For less than $200 more than I’d pay at a moderate, I’m getting a full kitchen, a separate sleeping area, and an amazing deluxe resort experience.

Don’t get me wrong.  I love Disney resorts.  You’ll find here that I probably write about them more than anything else. But as often as I go, I have to save money where I can and what I do save, I want to spend on experiences and food.   So don’t be surprised if you see me at Pop.  I’ll be the one on the way to  California Grill.

For a more in depth look at the differences between moderate and value pools, check out this post here.  Want to know more about renting points?  You can read about it here or check out the DVC boards at Disboards.com. Finally! A Comic for the Ladies...Or Fans of Classic Literature

I don’t know about all of you, but I have never really gotten into comic books.  I think I liked them as a kid and may have had a few, but I was not really a collector or die hard fan.  I also think I know the reason why.  It’s not that I didn’t have a comic book shop in my town or that my parents refused to buy them.  It was the fact that comic books did not really seem to be made for girls.  I know some people may not agree, but go into a comic book shop and tell me how many females (young or old) you see inside.  I am willing to bet that the majority of individuals you see will be male.

Now, this is not to say that girls that have an affinity for comics are strange.  I am simply stating that traditionally, there has not been a mass market appeal to women.  Occasionally you would get your Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, etc., but these were really scarce offerings in a sea of superheroes.  Not to mention, that the majority of female characters you saw on the covers of the comics, were usually buxom babes with very little clothing.  That probably also scared away the female fan base as that really doesn’t do a lot for your ego.

So the other day I venture into the comic bookstore with my husband.  I can sometimes find something that interests me, like the new Muppets comics, but normally I would not go in there on my own.  On this particular trip, I started looking around while he was talking to the clerks.  Lo and behold, a Marvel comic entitled, “Pride & Prejudice” captures my eye.  Now anyone who is a fan of the classics, a great love story or that has been subjected to high school English has probably seen this title before.   Being a fan of Jane Austen, I know the story well.

My first thought is confusion – Am I seeing this right?  “Pride & Prejudice” in a comic store?

Then I moved on to skepticism – Oh no.  I really hope they did not mess with this epic love story.  That would be such a tragedy!  How would they fit all of this into a comic book any way?

I finally end on curiosity.  I picked up a copy and began reading with trepidation –  Hmmm.  Not bad.  It of course moves faster than the novel, but nothing major seems to be missing.  The Bennets are all there and accounted for.  Bingley and Netherfield are in existence.  Maybe this won’t be awful.

So I decided to take the leap and purchase the series which consists of five comics that came out starting in April 2009.  And that was all she wrote.  I was hooked by the middle of the first comic.  The author (Nancy Butler) utilized much of the original dialogue and the artist (Hugo Petrus) worked seamlessly with her to tell this classic story in a beautiful, graphic format.  The pictures and emotion along with perfectly synced wording conveyed more emotion and feeling than you could imagine.  It is an incredible feat to pull off a story of this complexity in so few (comparatively) pages.

I was so enthralled with it that I purchased the trade paperback to read in the future and the individual comics to preserve as collectibles.

The comic and the way it conveyed the story was fantastic.  It not only gave me a greater appreciation for the medium, but it gave me hope that maybe this is the start of things to come.  More options for women to enjoy in the comic book realm.  I don’t expect a rush of material overnight, but it is refreshing to see some change.  If you are a fan of a good love story, literary classics or a woman looking for a good comic, check this series out.  Elizabeth and Darcy won’t fail to entertain you and neither will Marvel.

Ask a Disney Question:Any Plans to Build a Disney Park in Beijing?

Ask a Disney Question:Any Plans to Build a Disney Park in Beijing?

This question comes from Chelsea, who asks “Will Disney still want to build a park in Beijing?”

At this point, there aren’t any plans for another Disney park in China, with Disney for the time being focused on the construction of its hard-won park in Shanghai and the struggling Hong Kong Disney park.  That doesn’t mean that Disney doesn’t have any plans somewhere in the distant future, but we can’t find a whisper of good information on a Disney Beijing park anywhere.  Keep in mind that it took two decades of not so-secret negotiations to get the okay to build the park in Shanghai, so even if  Disney is thinking about it, it won’t happen for a very long time.

Building a Disney theme park in any country is complicated, not just logistically but psychologically.  It’s a product, after all, that’s closely associated with the United States and gives at least the appearance of transplanting a foreign culture right into Mainland China.   Add to that dealing with a communist regime, which tends to work slowly, and a country that is, for the most part, still very poor.  Most Mainland Chinese have had only very limited exposure to Disney characters. Further, theme parks are generally regarded as being for children and visiting a Disney park is still out of reach for many Chinese, even with the growing economy.    Finally, and perhaps most important, top political advisers in China are questioning the logic behind building the Shanghai park given the poor numbers that came out recently from the Disneyland Hong Kong park.

But wait!  One thing that might amuse you, is that there already is a “Disney” theme park in Beijing,  the Beijing Shijingshan Amusement Park. Built in 1986, it has a castle (shown above) that strongly resembles Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle and a structure that looks a lot like Epcot’s Spaceship Earth. If you visit the park, you’ll notice characters that look a lot like Mickey and Minnie, as well as other trademarked non-Disney characters.  Disney lawyers are apparently in negotiations with the Shijingshan Amusement Park’s lawyers over these issues.   No word yet on the outcome.

And here I worried about buying a possibly bootlegged copy of Beauty and the Beast!

We’ll update if we hear anything else. Thanks for reading the blog and for your question.

Speaking of Alice our own Anne’ was out shopping recently and found some interesting Alice in Wonderland items to purchase from nail polish to clothing and accessories at Claire’s. Check them out!

Here are a few more articles from around the web that I thought were quite interesting that I wanted to share.

I want to start out with all new Blog Carnival for the month of April. This months edition has some great articles from all the best Disney blogs, including some brand new ones! Check it out.

Jerry over at Disney 4 Dads shares with us what to do on a Dreary Day at Walt Disney World. What he mentions I still need to do but just have never gotten around to doing. It’s on my list though 🙂

Couponing for Disney is another great site that I try to visit daily. Trying to single out one of Kristin’s articles would be impossible as she has so many money saving offers coming in almost every few minutes. I did hear someone was featured on her site this week, and shared how to Save Money at Walt Disney World.

Another great site that I spend my days at is Stitch Kingdom. Brad really hunts down the Disney News articles including this one from this past week. Disney Favorites from Travel Channel Arrive on Blu-ray and DVD for First Time

And now news from one of our local North Carolina Blogs it comes to us from Progress City USA. Michael Crawford at Progress City USA posts a review of Waking Sleeping Beauty, a film that we all must see.

Finally keep sending in those Disney Questions Chris is loving it. She enjoys doing the research and helping you find answers to those tough Disney question. She really helped me this past week pick out a DisneyWorld Deluxe Resort and opened my eyes to some very helpful insights.

I hope you have a great week, and thanks for stopping by Chip and Co.
