Disney World Quick Tips – What not to do your first day.

Disney World Quick Tips – What not to do your first day.

If you’re like most people, getting to Disney World can be a little exhausting regardless of how you get there, but it’s hard not to want to go out and do everything the moment you arrive on property.  If you get there early enough (or if you have an annual pass), you’re probably going straight to the parks.  This is usually what I do, with great plans to finish up the night in whatever park is having  Extra Magic Hours that night, only to find myself back at the resort and asleep by 9:00 p.m.  That early morning flight, even though it’s only 75 minutes long, the ride on Magic Express, and the excitement that usually means I don’t sleep that much the night before, gets me every time.   Still, if I get there early enough, I’m going to the park that first day!

Having said that, I do think there are some things you should absolutely avoid on your travel day.

1.  Any major  kid activity like Bibbity Bobbity Boutique or Pirate’s League.  If you’re doing BBB, you’re probably spending around $100 for the experience. You’ll want your child awake and happy, not sleepy and cranky.

2.  Big dinners out.  Unless you can only get that elusive Le Cellier reservation for that night, save it for another day.

3.  Implementing your actual touring plan.  If you have a strict touring plan, save it for day 2.  It’s fine going to the park on the same day that you travel, but take it easy.  This is especially true if you have young kids who aren’t experienced park-goers. They may need some time to adjust to their new surroundings.

Next up, I’ll talk about what to do if you’re not going to park on your first day.

ABC Picks Up Emmy Award-Winning Reality Series “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” For A Second Season

ABC Picks Up Emmy Award-Winning Reality Series "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution" For A Second Season

The Emmy Award-winning reality series “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” has received a second season pick-up and will premiere later this season on ABC. In the new season, Jamie Oliver, the impassioned chef, TV personality and best-selling author, will bring the revolution to the nation’s second largest city of Los Angeles, CA and take on his biggest challenge yet. The series, which recently won the 2010 Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program, will run for six episodes.

In the inspiring series from Fresh One and Ryan Seacrest Productions, Jamie attacks the problems of obesity, heart disease and diabetes in this country–where our nation’s children are the first generation not expected to live as long as their parents. Jamie invites viewers to take a stand and change the way they eat in their homes and schools. The first six episodes were set in Huntington, West Virginia.

The series is loosely based on Jamie’s U.K. series, “Jamie’s Ministry of Food” and “Jamie’s School Dinners,” which changed what British schoolchildren are fed at school. In America he’s turning his attention to helping people of all ages change their eating habits by learning to cook and choosing fresh food over processed in schools, homes, workplaces and even restaurants.

Jamie’s recent television credits include “Oprah’s Big Give” for ABC and “Jamie at Home” on the Cooking Channel. He is the author of ten popular cookbooks, including The Naked Chef, Cook with Jamie and the New York Times best-selling Jamie’s Food Revolution. Hyperion will publish his newest cookbook, Jamie’s America: Easy Twists on Great American Classics and More!, in October 2010.

The series is produced by the Emmy Award-winning Fresh One Productions and Ryan Seacrest Productions. Executive producers of “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” are Jamie Oliver and Ryan Seacrest.

GOOD EATS – Citricos, Grand Floridian Resort and Spa

Enjoy the taste of Southern European cuisine at Citricos, located inside Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Inside this signature restaurant, the master chefs rotate dinner selections frequently with American dishes inspired by the cuisine of Provençe, Tuscany and the Spanish Riviera. My wife and I have eaten here three times in the last year, and each time, the menu ha been different. Menu choices including steak, pastas, and seafood, depending on the season, but every dish is unique, and every dish is delicious. You can also choose from the extensive and award winning wine list featuring a number of international wines that are available both by the glass or the bottle.

Located on the second floor, the restaurant overlooks the courtyard and pool area, and if you are enjoying a later dinner, you might even catch a view of the fireworks from the Magic Kingdom (though the music is not piped in). Other tables overlook the bustling kitchen where you can admire the chefs bring their creations to life. Although the dining room is large and seats numerous guests, it still feels very intimate and is a wonderful setting for a romantic dinner. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable.

For even more of an intimate setting, guests may elect the Chef’s Domain, where guests can order off the traditional menu or have the chef create a menu in a private dining room.

Citricos is a signature restaurant and costs two table service credits on Disney’s Dining Plan. For guests not on the plan, Citricos also accepts the Tables in Wonderland card.

Ask a Disney Question: Do children need identification to pick up tickets?

Ask a Disney Question: Do children need identification to pick up tickets?

This question comes from Rand, who asks:  “We have tickets purchased for us, waiting at the will call window and I’m trying to figure out whether or not our children will need ID, or just the adults. Thanks!”

Rand, you won’t need any sort of ID to pick you your childens’ tickets. In general, Disney doesn’t ask for any identification for children at all.   There are some exceptions, for example, when an older child is doing a behind the scenes tour with an age requirement.   You may want to bring a copy of their birth certificates for other reasons, however.

Thanks for your question and for reading the site.

Florida’s High Speed Rail Controversy

Florida's High Speed Rail Controversy

I thought this was an interesting article talking about the High Speed Train that will be going from Tampa to Orlando and eventually all the way to Miami. This article comes to us from Fox 35 News in Orlando.

A High Speed Rail meeting was held in Orlando Thursday , and there were big concerns about one company bidding on it.. French Railway Company, also called SNCF., is under fire because during World War II the company transported Jews to concentration camps.

The Florida High Speed Rail will go from Orland to Tampa. Passenger stations will also be in Lakeland, Walt Disney World, International Drive and Orlando International Airport.

The train will then eventually extend its service to Miami. So, could it be built by a company with ties to the Holocaust? One woman thinks so. She drove all the way from Boca Raton to be at the Florida Department of Transportations public meeting in Orlando.

Her message was to raise awareness about one of the companies interested in building Central Florida’s proposed high speed rail project. It turns out they worked hand in hand with the Nazis.

SNCF operates the world’s fastest passenger trains. Rosette Goldstein says her father, a French Jew, was transported by one of the company’s trains to a concentration camp during World War II.

They were paid per head and per kilometer for every prisoner that they took to the camps.

“We appreciate Mrs. Goldstein came up from Boca Raton to share her story with us. She told me she’s here to speak on be half of all the millions of people that died between World War II.” said Dick Kane, FDOT, Director of Communications.
