Downtown Disney: Create-Your-Own & Customizable Souvenirs and Gifts

Downtown Disney: Create-Your-Own & Customizable Souvenirs and Gifts

One reason I enjoy visiting Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World is the shopping opportunities. But it’s not the standard Mickey t-shirt, which is certainly available, that draws me to Downtown Disney. It’s that many stores offer merchandise to customize and personalize.

Custom and Personalized Gifts at Downtown Disney Marketplace

At Arribas Brothers, guests can watch crystal items being made by glass artists and select from a number of items that can be etched with a personal message. Popular items include Mickey figures and a small Cinderella glass slipper. Engraving for metal jewelry and wooden keepsake boxes is also available.

Customized Mickey Mouse Ears. Photo by Gene Duncan/Disney.

Create Your Own Ear Hat, a small area located between the shopping spaces for Disney Design-A-Tee and The Art of Disney, offers the custom Disney item. Guests design a personalized set of the iconic Mickey ears. Just select the hat base from several colors, designs and styles, choose some ears, and add some patches and embroidery, and let the Cast Members construct the final product.

Hanes sponsors Disney Design-a-Tee, where guests personalize a t-shirt. Using a touch-screen kiosk, guests select the shirt’s size and color, then choose images from one of the offered themes (e.g. Princesses, Disney Characters, Pixar, Films) and add ready-to-use or custom text. In addition to a personalized souvenir or gift, Design-a-Tee offers an easy way to create matching shirts for your Walt Disney World vacation. Shirts take about a half-hour to make after orders are completed.

Looking for a Christmas ornament that will reflects the spirit of Disney and the holidays? Disney’s Days of Christmas celebrates all year round with its seasonal merchandise, and some ornaments can be personalized.

At the sports-oriented Team Disney, guests can get a custom-made baseball bat (mini or full size) laser engraved with a name, signature or logo. The store can also customize baseballs, helmets, or display cases.

Customized Shopping Experiences At Downtown Disney West Side

D-Street Vinylmation Creation Station, Downtown DisneyFor additional creative, customizable fun, visit Ridemakerz and D-Street at Downtown Disney West Side. Both these stores offer shopping as interactive, immersive experiences.

D-Street is the home to the popular and collectible Vinylmation figurines. It’s also the spot for guests to show off their artistic flair at the Vinylmation Creation Station, a table with hundreds of decorated 3” figures for inspiration. Guests can take a blank Vinylmation figure and decorate it with markers, eyes, stickers and small accessories. Artists: Don’t forget to sign your masterpiece.

At Ridemakerz, guests can customize racing cars and other autos, from a slick Corvette to a sturdy ambulance, tricking them out in various ways. After selecting the vehicle type, guests select various add-ons, including wheels and rims, stickers, bumpers and lights. Perhaps the main appeal of the Ridemakerz experience? Adding the remote-control option.

Customized Toys for Kids at Downtown Disney

Generations of families know Legos to be interactive fun. That sense of play exists the Lego Imagination Center, where guests can fill up buckets of mix-and-match Legos to create their own personal set.

Once Upon a Toy Shop is another toy lovers’ must-stop shop. Guests can create their own sets of classic toys, such as choosing a box full of body parts for Mr. Potato Head or a make-your-own Lincoln Log collection. A “Build Your Own Lightsaber” option allows “Star Wars” fans to take the Force home with them.

At the World of Disney, children (and kids at heart) can fill up a treasure chest of pirate’s booty in the Adventure Room. Pretty princesses can make their own tiaras and wands or fill jewelry boxes in The Princess Room.

T-Rex, the themed restaurant, offers a Build-a-Dino, related to the Build-a-Bear franchise, during which kids create a cute pre-historic plush.

More Downtown Disney Create-Your-Own Fun

The Spice & Tea Exchange, Downtown Disney. Photo by D.K. Peterson

Adults might like creating their own spice blends at The Spice & Tea Exchange, located inside Mickey’s Pantry, or order custom scents at Basin, the shop for homemade personal beauty products. These store are found at Downtown Disney Marketplace.

For inexpensive create-your-own souvenirs, seek out the Disney pressed penny machines that can be found around Downtown Disney. For $.51 each (one penny, plus two quarters), guests can squash a penny and impress upon it a Disney design. A very portable memento, there’s something about collecting pressed pennies that brings out your inner 10-year-old.

In the mood for tasty concoctions to please your taste buds? Guests can make their own snacks at Goofy’s Candy Co. Apples, Rice Krispie treats, cookies, pretzel rods, or marshmallows serve as the base for assorted toppings. At Disney’s Candy Cauldron, guests can have candy apples made to order by choosing a coating and a topping.

And that’s just a partial list of personalized merchandise at Downtown Disney. Guests can, among other things, have their silhouette captured or caricature created; visit the Hands Arts Memories booth for hand-painted handprints;  and get custom jewelry designed at Pick-a-Pearl and other kiosks.

While some of the same customizable items can be found at Disney theme parks, the concentration of such experiences at Downtown Disney helps me focus on shopping as its own creative pleasure. It’s these kinds of souvenirs and gifts that are fun to make, creating Walt Disney World memories that matches the merchandise.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opening Ceremony – Kinda’ Fun

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opening Ceremony – Kinda’ Fun

We don’t spend a lot of time at Disney’s Animal Kingdom except to see some of the shows and hit a couple of the significant attractions. There are also lots of photo opportunities and we take advantage of those too. On our last visit, for some reason, we got there very early (for us) and had a chance to experience the opening ceremony. We travel to Walt Disney World very regularly and really didn’t realize that there was an official opening ceremony at the Animal Kingdom. It was very cute and actually quite fun.

It opens with Minnie, Goofy, and Pluto arriving in front of the Tree of Life in a safari truck and giving the usual rah! rah! (which we enjoy because it’s part of the show) for a few minutes.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opening Ceremony – Kinda’ Fun

After they finish, as if by Magic, Mickey appears in the distance right next to the Tree Of Life and lets us all know what’s about to happen and what’s going on at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opening Ceremony – Kinda’ Fun

After Mickey has finished with his bit of Disney cheerleading, our original friends, Minnie, Goofy, and Pluto tell us to “Let The Adventure Begin” and off we go into the park.Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opening Ceremony – Kinda’ Fun

You know what, it beats the heck out of just unlocking the doors and letting the crowds thunder into the wilds of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I’m all for fun in most forms and this is cute, fun, and a great way to start your day. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Making the best use of time

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Making the best use of time

If “a penny saved is a penny earned,” then what of time?  Shouldn’t it follow that saving time is also merit-worthy?  Certainly using time purposefully is important, given that a guest has invested both money and time in a vacation.  What is “purposeful” varies from person to person, however.  Some guests at Epcot once shared that they were so enamored with the gardens that they hadn’t done any attractions – but they weren’t complaining; rather, they were complimenting … and beaming.  Here are some ways to “make time,” save time, add time and use time during a Disney park visit…

Disney’s FASTPASS system allows guests to avoid waiting at designated popular attractions in all four Walt Disney World theme parks.

Here’s how it works:

  • At the entrance to attractions offering FASTPASS, two times are posted – (1) approximate wait time using the normal queue and (2) return time for FASTPASS tickets currently being issued.
  • If the wait in the normal queue is long, guests can choose to obtain a FASTPASS ticket (at no charge) with an assigned return time (an hour-long window) and then use the time until then to enjoy other experiences in the park.
  • Upon returning to use their FASTPASS, the guest can hop on the attraction with little or no waiting.

A “rider swap” program lets both parents enjoy a ride – one parent waits with a child who is unable to ride an attraction while one parent rides.  Afterwards, the other parent can board the ride with minimal wait time.

Tip Boards located at strategic “crossroads” in each theme park provide guests with a heads-up concerning attractions’ wait times.  Guests can save time – and “steps” – by consulting the boards throughout the day.

Extra Magic Hours provide guests of select hotels at Walt Disney World Resort an opportunity for exclusive time in a Walt Disney World theme park.  The details:

  • The exclusive time is one hour prior to scheduled park opening or up to three hours after park closing.
  • The park varies from day to day.
  • In all, there are up to 16 extra theme park hours available each week.
  • The time is exclusively for guests of the 24 Walt Disney World owned-and-operated hotels, and Walt Disney World Dolphin, Walt Disney World Swan, Shades of Green and the Hilton at Downtown Disney.
  • Disney water parks sometimes open one hour early for guests of select Disney resort hotels.
  • To take advantage of the additional time in the parks, guests must have a Magic Your Way ticket valid for the park(s) offering Extra Magic Hours – and, of course, their hotel ID.
  • The Park Hopper option on Magic Your Way tickets allows guests to take advantage of Extra Magic Hours in a park or parks different from where the guest spends the rest of the day.

Guests arriving at park opening frequently head to a favorite attraction and enjoy it before it gets busy.

Guests who decide to forego viewing a popular parade frequently discover it’s a time to experience a popular attraction with less wait.

Festivals and special events are times when the theme parks feature extra entertainment and excitement –included with regular admission.  Several long-running events are the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival (spring), Epcot International Food & Wine Festival (fall), ESPN The Weekend (spring at Disney’s Hollywood Studios), Star Wars Weekends (spring at Disney’s Hollywood Studios), and elaborate decorations and seasonal entertainment at all four parks for the holidays.

The “best time” to visit depends.  The busier times to visit Walt Disney World parks are when school’s out for major holidays, the summer and three-day weekends.  The very busiest times typically are Christmas to New Year’s and around Easter.  Some considerations:

  • Avoiding the busy times likely means shorter waits for attractions and shows and better access to dining reservations.
  • Busy times can mean extended operating hours and sometimes special incremental entertainment.
  • Disney planners attempt to schedule periodic attraction closures for refurbishment at times other than vacation peaks.

Quick Service meals can cut down dining time – and sometimes cost. Addin flexibility because you can catch a gulp on the go without a reservation, and quick service can make consummate “good sense.”

Table Service restaurant experiences can enhance the theme park experience. There are restaurants that are worth the extra planning effort of a reservation, the extra time at the table, and possible extra expense.  These eateries, replete with elaborate theming, extend the entertainment experience of the park to mealtime.  Dining and relaxing in an ambiance reflecting a different time or place is an entertainment experience worth the time sitting.  Sometimes these restaurants serve up entertainment acts along with meals.  And sometimes the meal may be part of a package that provides preferred seating at no extra cost for a signature entertainment performance (such as Candlelight Processional at Epcot or “Fantasmic!” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios).

A longer stay can yield a vacation at a more comfortable pace.  Guest surveys show higher satisfaction ratings for longer stays – with “pace” typically cited as the reason.  After a week-long visit, guests have reported that they “didn’t feel rushed” and they “discovered a pool at the hotel.”

For a short-duration visit, make a short list of “must-sees” and “must-dos” based on the vacationing group’s interests.  One of the worst mistakes a guest can make is over-scheduling.  Be realistic in planning.  Don’t attempt to see and do everything.  Vacation shouldn’t feel like a track meet!  And remember to take into account any relevant factors such as height restrictions or ambulatory concerns.

Disney World Quick Tips – It’s Hokey and Goofy But It’s Still Fun

Disney World Quick Tips – It’s Hokey and Goofy But It’s Still Fun

When I tell folks that I never miss the Country Bear Jamboree on a Walt Disney World visit the typical reaction happens. First there’s the condescending smile and the rolling of the eyes as if to say – oh well, he’s old and just reliving his childhood. Then you get the comments like it’s old and tired, the animatronics are ancient, the jokes are stupid, and the bears look like they have seen better days. I always answer each one of them with the same statement – I know, but I still enjoy it and that’s really all that counts. The music is lively, I know all the words, and I sing along with my beloved bears!!! Sure, that’s silly but humor me. Remember I’m old (at least that’s what the eye rollers and smilers seem to think) and I know what I enjoy.

Perhaps the best part of the show is the finale when all of the animals are lit up and singing at the same time. It’s not a Hollywood musical number but it’s very pleasant and just plain fun.

Disney World Quick Tips – It’s Hokey and Goofy But It’s Still Fun

Next time you’re walking through Frontierland and headed for Liberty Square take a few minutes to go into the Air Conditioned theater and sit down for a fun show (and a little rest too). It may not be the highlight of your vacation but I think you will enjoy it. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Walt Disney World Hollywood Studios: The one ride I MUST ride

Walt Disney World Hollywood Studios: The one ride I MUST ride
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith: My MUST ride!

In the conclusion to my series on the one ride at each park that I must ride, today I’m taking a look at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  If you remember, my must ride at Magic Kingdom was Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  My must ride at Epcot was Spaceship Earth, and my must ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom was Expedition Everest.

Today, my must ride at Hollywood Studios is the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith!  That roller coaster was something that I always wanted to try, but for whatever reason never did – until this past summer.

I decided that no matter what else I did on this trip, one thing that I was not going to miss was riding the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.  The time finally came when we got our FastPasses, got in line, and walked right through to the front.  In fact, we went so fast that we didn’t even notice the stretch limos and how they were taking off.  To top off what is perhaps the best first ride I have ever had, we were seated in the very back of the coaster!

We got in, got ready for the start, and watched as they counted down the time before we left.  Then, when we started, we were off!  0-60 in 2.8 seconds!  This ride has it all, a corkscrew, a loop-de-loop, and some incredible twists and turns!  The track is all indoor, and it is in the dark, but there are some really neat road signs done in neon colors that provide the illumination you need.  And before I forget, the entire ride is put to the incredible music of Aerosmith

After not riding the roller coaster at all in any of our previous trips, I made up for it during this past trip.  We rode it four times while we were there, and I plan on riding it many more times when we go down this coming June.  The Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster became my must ride at Hollywood Studios that first ride, and it catapulted all the way to the status of my favorite Disney World ride, and my favorite roller coaster I have ever ridden.

If you have never ridden the coaster before, I highly encourage you to try it out at least once!  Even if you are not a roller coaster fan, to me the adrenaline rush that comes with this ride will quickly turn you into a fan of the genre!

What’s Your Jedi Name?

Dave Filoni and Aljon Go

In order to get your Jedi first name:

1) You must take the first 3 letters of your last name.
2) Then you must take the first 2 letters of your first name.

To get your Jedi last name
1) You must take the first 3 letters of your motherís maiden name.
2) Then you must take the first 3 letters of the town or city you were born in.

My Jedi name is “Go-Al Ocasea”.

Here’s something fun to do, especially with your kids.

Once you have a name for you and your child, have a picture taken of you along with them dressed up in some Star Wars robes. It’s really cool if you are able to get a shot or two made at Tatooine Traders/Star Tours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Don’t forget the Lightsabers! Create a certificate with their name on it signed by you, their Jedi Master using their new Jedi name. Now you have a cool scrapbook keepsake.

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Shopping smart for tickets

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Shopping smart for tickets

The Magic Your Way ticket system lets guests decide what ticket features best fit their Disney vacation plans … and that’s what they buy.  Guests decide the number of days and whether optional features; park hopping, visits to Disney attractions outside the theme parks and “non-expiration” of tickets are important.  Here are some price and value examples…

Per-day ticket costs decrease for longer stays.  A seven-day ticket without optional features brings down the per-day cost to less than half the price, per day, compared to seven individual one-day Base Tickets.  And the per-day cost of a 10-day ticket is less than one-third the price, per day, compared to 10 individual one-day Base Tickets.

The Water Park Fun & More option can produce significant savings for recreation and entertainment outside the theme parks
.

Here’s what you need to know about the option:

  • It provides admissions to the guest’s choice of Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park, DisneyQuest, Disney’s Oak Trail golf course and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
  • The number of admissions it provides varies depending upon the number of days of the Base Ticket (the option added to a one- or two-day Base Ticket provides two visits to the guest’s choice from among the listed attractions; added to a seven-day Base Ticket, it provides seven visits).
  • It costs $54.  Considering that one-day admission to a water park is $40-$46 or to DisneyQuest is $36-$42, substantial savings are possible.

The Park Hopper option can enhance the value of the vacation by allowing a guest to take advantage of special fun offered at different times of day at different Disney theme parks.  Other potential Park Hopper benefits:

  • If the vacation stay is longer, “hopping” is perfect for repeating favorite attractions at the various parks.
  • If the guest is staying “on property,” park-hopping can be the ticket to extra time in the parks (more about this under “Making the best use of time”).

Kids under age 3 are provided free admission to all Walt Disney World theme parks.

So shop smart and don’t hesitate to call Disney and ask questions!

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Miss The ‘Train Setup’ At Epcot

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Miss The ‘Train Setup’ At Epcot

After you visit the Germany Pavilion and head towards Italy make sure you stop and admire what is called the “Train Setup” just past the Pavilion.  It’s a delightful little model of a German town with incredible detail. You will thoroughly enjoy it, particularly those of you who are model train enthusiasts. Everything is in perfect scale with one exception. On occasion, one of the local creatures (gecko) can be found sitting on or around one of the structures. It does look a bit odd but makes for a terrific photo – perhaps on our next visit I’ll be able to get a shot of one.

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Miss The ‘Train Setup’ At Epcot

Is it a super duper attraction? No it isn’t but it is a nice little diversion and just one of the thousands you will find around Epcot, particularly in the World Showcase. Is it worth a special trip to Epcot to see? No it isn’t but it is one of those things that most of us seem to rush on by while trying to get to the “biggies”. We all need to rush a bit less and enjoy the detail that the Imagineers have placed virtually everywhere at Walt Disney World.

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Miss The ‘Train Setup’ At Epcot

I hope you will all stop by this little display the next time you are strolling through Epcot’s World Showcase. It won’t take long to look it over and even snap a few photos. The little things like this add so much to a Walt Disney World Vacation. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Getting the most out of your visit

Disneyworld Planning 101 – Getting the most out of your visit

How can a you get the absolute most theme park fun and value out of your Walt Disney World visit?

Get to know the Area! Do your research, and Ask questions.

Several examples are:

While the four Walt Disney World theme parks are all created for family fun, virtually any guest familiar with Disney World has a “favorite park.” That’s because the parks’ themes vary dramatically!

From lands of whimsy in Magic Kingdom to worlds of scientific and cultural accomplishment at Epcot to streets, sets and backlots of show business at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, to realms of animals living, extinct and imaginary at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

You are immersed in those thematic worlds through stories “told” in attractions and experiences. But the methods of immersive storytelling are many. Sometimes a physically interactive entertainment concept is used, with guests being drawn into the action and becoming stars of the show. Sometimes ride systems carry guests on journeys that range from tame to wild – just like the stories. And sometimes the experience is physically passive, designed for the senses to “drink it in.”

With “homework” ahead of vacation, you can customize an itinerary to suit your interests as well as considerations such as age, height restrictions and ambulatory limitations.

A valuable source of information relating to “Traveling With Little Ones” and “Guests With Disabilities” is www.disneyworld.com or if you visit Chip and Company every day were bound to teach you a little something we have learned from either myself or my talented staff of writers.

Oldies But Goodies – What Should We Expect From A Walt Disney World Vacation?

Oldies But Goodies – What Should We Expect From A Walt Disney World Vacation?

I hate to start by saying It Depends but when we, as Seniors, travel to Walt Disney World we have the flexibility and the luxury to make that vacation exactly what we want it to be so long as we are traveling by ourselves or with like minded seniors. We are not locked into being anywhere at any special time and the only commitment we have is to doing exactly what we want to do. If you are traveling as part of a mixed generation group the rules are different, after all, family peace and contentment is extremely important.

As a couple or small group of seniors there are a number of options for a vacation theme:

  • All Inclusive – Do as much of everything as you can, focusing primarily on the theme parks. It also includes time at Downtown Disney and perhaps even a water park. You might also consider things like parasailing and/or a Characters In Flight balloon ride. This is for the enthusiastic and high spirited Senior.
  • Focus On Dining – If you enjoy fine or even quirky dining, Walt Disney World will give you the opportunity of a lifetime to experience an enormous number and variety of particularly fine and/or fun restaurants. These run the gamut from the Whispering Canyon Cafe to Victoria and Albert’s with every experience  in between. Sure you can do other things but you focus on the joy of fun and fine dining.
  • Golf – Lots of seniors love golf and Walt Disney World is an ideal place to pursue that love. There are four championship courses and one nine hole course on site and Disney resort hotel guests experience a variety of perks including free transportation to the courses to meet their tee times. A surprising number of us Oldies play a lot of golf while on vacation.
  • Hanging Out – It may seem unusual to go to the #1 tourist attraction in the world and primarily spend your time just hanging out at your resort hotel  or just traveling around the 42 square miles of Walt Disney World and never go to a theme park. Unusual yes, but it happens. Many of the Disney resort hotels are lovely and offer a lot of extras if you look for them. These extras range from beautiful pools to spa treatments and also include boat rentals and fishing trips.

These are just a few things you might expect if you theme your vacation to the things you love to do. That’s the beauty of a Walt Disney World vacation, you are not required to do anything or are you prevented from doing anything you would like to do. Your vacation is what you want it to be and how you want it to be. It’s all up to you what you choose to do. Have fun with it and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!
