Disney Advanced Dining Reservations System goes Online

Do you have a smart phone? Do you use it religiously for just about everything. Ever thought about making a Disney Advanced Dining Reservation on it?

Well now you can.

While you are checking out Chip and Company’s new Mobile site design pop over to Disney Dining Reservation mobile website and make an ADR. I googled Disney Dining and they were the first site on the list.

If you look at the screen shot above from my Droid Phone you get an idea of what you can do. This would come in very handy if you were at the park and need to make a Quick ADR or like me live on your cell phone.

Try it out and let us know what you think in the comment section below.

Affordable Disney Souvenirs for Penny Pinchers

Affordable Disney Souvenirs for Penny Pinchers

Among the most affordable Disney souvenirs is something that costs just over 50 cents, offers a good deal of fun involved in getting it, and can provide a great commemoration of your Disney trip……yes, that would be pressed pennies. With pressed penny machines located all over the parks and resorts, there are enough design options to satisfy the “collector” in anyone. Kids especially enjoy the process of squishing pennies and parents truly appreciate the ability to encourage their children in collecting a souvenir that won’t break the bank (sorry for the pun 🙂  )

So if this type of souvenir appeals to you, what do you need to know?

Come Prepared

You may want to plan ahead and bring some pennies with you for this activity, as well as some quarters to pay for each pressed penny: cost is typically 51 cents (your penny, and the 50 cents to press it). You may want to consider whether you want “shiny” pressed pennies! Some people do, and choose to use only new pennies…but know that sometimes the zinc in newer pennies will show through the copper when pressed, leaving a marbled effect. Don’t like that idea? Then use older, pure copper pennies and clean them in advance using vinegar, or some silver cleaner and a soft cloth.

Or consider pressed quarters, which will of course cost you more, but can be a nice variation for your family’s collection.

Find All the Machines

One of the things that surprised me when we first started collecting pressed pennies, was the many, many options for designs that are available! Pressed penny and quarter machines are all over the place, and each one it seems, has a different design. Guest Relations can be a big help here, by providing you with a list of where all the machines are and the designs that are available. Generally, you will find machines in most if not all of the resort hotels, parks and Downtown Disney. One thing that I think is especially helpful is that there are often machines located in the shops, which is a perfect distraction for children who are begging for you to buy them something: go find the pressed penny machine instead!

What I Really Love About Pressed Pennies….

Other than the obvious thing, which is the inexpensive cost, what I truly love about this type of Disney souvenir, is the interaction that gets kids involved with the planning and collecting of their pressed pennies. I am a big fan of encouraging collections: kids love to collect things and when preserved, they can bring back special Disney memories for years to come.

So get your kids involved in planning this souvenir activity in advance of your trip. Encourage them to help collect (and possibly clean if they are old enough) the pennies. When you get to Disney, have them “hunt” for the machines, and compare available designs: many designs are commemorative, and only available for a short time. Others are of just a particular location, ride, or attraction. Involve kids of all ages in this: little ones who can’t read yet, may enjoy collecting the “penny pictures” more than collecting autographs!

And have them be involved in pressing those pennies! You may want to help a bit at the beginning until they get the hang of it, but don’t be discouraged if each penny is not “perfect”…that’s part of the fun. (Want a tip to help your penny designs to show up well? Get the design pressed on the “face” rather than the “tail” side.)

Lastly, once you get home, display those pennies; don’t put them in a box somewhere! Just like looking at pictures and pins, looking at your pressed pennies is like revisiting your Disney vacation all over again! So get an inexpensive book that is designed to hold your new pressed penny collection (available in some of the gift shops), and take a look at it every once in a while. You’ll enjoy the collection as much as, if not more than, the special memories of your Disney vacation!

So….does your family enjoy pressing pennies? What tips would you offer??

Nancy, her husband and college-age daughter live in the Baltimore MD area, but consider Walt Disney World their second “home”. She started her site, The Affordable Mouse, as a way to share ideas about how to plan affordable Disney vacations. Her favorite things at Disney World (in no particular order) are Soarin’, most of the food in World Showcase, Illuminations…and that special “Disney magic” found in the most unexpected places.

Spooky!!!! Haunted Mansion provides frightful fun to Magic Kingdom guests

The Haunted Mansion at the Magic Kingdom is one of the most beloved attractions at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Touring the home in a “Doom Buggy,” guests find themselves amidst a paranormal party with 999 “Happy Haunts.” More fun than fright, the Haunted Mansion also features one of Disney Parks most famous tunes, “Grim Grinning Ghosts.”

Happy Birthday! Disney’s Planet Challenge Kicks off Year Two

Happy Birthday! Disney's Planet Challenge Kicks off Year Two

Disney today announced the kickoff of the second annual Disney’s Planet Challenge, a free, project-based environmental and science competition for classrooms nationwide. The response to Disney’s Planet Challenge last year was unprecedented, with thousands of classrooms enrolled from all 50 states. That success has prompted new program elements for year two including:

  • Expansion to additional grade levels with an all new middle school track
  • A new level of collaboration with DonorsChoose.org to help classrooms cover the costs of class projects — with an added focus on educators in the Gulf region
  • A new online video series that will help engage classrooms as they embark on the educational adventure of a lifetime that could result in a trip to Disneyland(R) Resort

Disney’s Planet Challenge offers budding scientists the chance to use their imagination and creativity to help the planet while giving educators a fresh new way to motivate students with the help of an educationally sound curriculum that meets national and state guidelines requirements. Last year, a 6th grade class from Mediapolis, Iowa took top honors with a project that focused on saving the quail population in their local community.

Special Disney prizes will be granted to national and state winners. Participation is free, and enrollment is open now through December 17 at www.disney.com/planetchallenge. For the project, students identify an environmental issue in their local community and design a solution they manage from start to finish. Past projects from the elementary competition range from campus-wide renewable energy projects to protection of local habitats.

“It is our goal to inspire a sense of environmental stewardship in kids as the inheritors of our planet, and education is a critical component of that,” said Beth Stevens, senior vice president of Environmental Affairs, The Walt Disney Company. “Building off the success of our first year, we are thrilled to expand the reach of Disney’s Planet Challenge and offer more tools and resources that educators can draw from.”

Expansion to Middle Schools

Middle school students now have the opportunity to participate in Disney’s Planet Challenge, thanks to collaboration with UL Environment, with whom Disney has a shared mission to inspire environmental stewardship and education in young people. Formerly open to 4th through 6th grade classrooms, Disney’s Planet Challenge is being expanded to include two tracks: one for elementary schools grades 3-5, and another for middle schools grades 6-8. The middle school curriculum will offer an increased focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education.

New Funding Options with DonorsChoose.org

For teachers who may need help funding their projects, Disney is again working with DonorsChoose.org, an online charity that connects individual “citizen philanthropists” with classrooms in need.

Disney is providing a $250,000 grant to DonorsChoose.org that will in part be applied towards a “Double Your Impact” matching offer on its website, which will fund 50% of the cost of environmental science classroom projects for Disney’s Planet Challenge. This funding is matched by individual donors visiting the DonorsChoose.org site. A portion of Disney’s grant will also provide funding specifically for educators in the Gulf region whose projects meet specific criteria. For more information about eligibility, deadlines and funding limits, visit www.disney.com/planetchallenge.

Spreading the Word

To help increase awareness and create a sustaining community of learners, Disney’s Planet Challenge is launching a new video series that will feature two types of videos every month: “The Newsfeed” and “Imagine Your Planet.”

“The Newsfeed” videos focus on updates from the Disney’s Planet Challenge newsroom, including environmental news from around the world as well as tutorials on getting the most out of the Disney’s Planet Challenge website. With “Imagine Your Planet,” Disney’s Planet Challenge goes into classrooms across the country, following students on their mission to create a better planet. The videos also will highlight former students that had participated in Disney’s Planet Challenge as they continue their project beyond the classroom.

A Rewarding Experience

Adding to the education and sense of pride students will have working on their projects, Disney offers special prizes to national and state winners. The national grand prize winning elementary school class will enjoy a celebration at Disneyland and middle school national grand prize winners will earn a $20,000 grant for their school. Additionally, both grand prize-winning classrooms will be illustrated and appear within a Marvel comic book.

Built on a Solid Educational Foundation

Disney collaborates with the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the WestEd K-12 Alliance as well as state and federal agencies to develop curriculums that meet all state education standards. Disney has also worked closely with the U.S. and California Environmental Protection Agencies, the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the California Department of Education to ensure the highest environmental standards.
