Last Chance to Enter D23 Expo’s Fan Art Contest Honoring One Hundred and One Dalmatians

The Disney Fan Art Contest will feature the creative talents of D23 Members at the D23 Expo 2011 taking place this year August 19-21 at the Convention Center in Anaheim, California.  The contest puts the “spot”-light on One Hundred and One Dalmatians by inviting imaginative Disney lovers to create work inspired by the beloved animated film, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. Winners, selected by a panel of Disney’s creative executives, will see their work prominently showcased in the D23 Expo’s Fan Art Gallery, themed to the infamous House of de Vil.

The deadline is April 4, 2011 so there’s still time for artists to submit sketches of their proposed work. As long as the final creation evokes One Hundred and One Dalmatians, the sky’s the limit for entries. There are some restrictions, however, so please read specifications carefully. For the entry form, click here; for more information, click here.

The D23 Expo—The Ultimate Disney Fan Event—brings the entire world of Disney under one roof, providing attendees with unprecedented access to Disney films, television and theme parks as never before.

Annual D23 basic membership fee is $34.99, which is more than made up with accrued club discounts and benefits available throughout the year.

Wednesday with Walt: Integrity

Wednesday with Walt: Integrity

I am sure almost all of us have been asked this familiar question when playing some type of ice-breaker game: “If you had to choose one word that defined you and your life, what word would it be?” Sometimes it is asked in a different way such as, “What is your legacy?”  or “What do you want to be remembered for?” Have you ever given that much thought?

If I had to think of a one-word description for Walt Disney, I would be flooded with visions of block lettering zooming on a superhighway in my mind.  Chief among them would be genius, diligence, compassion, tolerance and integrity. The definition of integrity is a firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values. You might think that I am referring to Walt’s artistic side, but I am referring to his character.

To me, Walt was of exceptional character. I grew up believing that if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. I am not one to speak up for myself, but when it comes to standing up for someone else I have no problem, especially when it is clear that someone is being unfairly judged or accused of something.

Walt Disney was a strong man. There was a common misconception that he was a sentimental softy. He was sentimental, that is true, but when the situation called for it he was tough. In “The Fantastic Walt Disney” published in 1964, Bill Davidson described a situation that happened once in the Disney Studios. He said:

“Not long ago a well-known executive came over from another film company to work as an associate on a Walt Disney production. The first day on the job the executive was annoyed by the sound of a lawn mower outside his window, and he shouted at the gardener to desist. An hour later the executive received a call from Disney’s secretary, informing him that Disney wanted to see him. The executive rushed over and Disney said, “You spoke harshly to that man. He’s been with me for twenty years. I don’t want it to happen again.” The executive mumbled a contrite, “Yes, sir.” Disney continued, “And there’s another thing I want you to remember. There’s only one s.o.b. at this studio – and that’s me.”

To some people that might seem like Walt was a cruel man. To me, it says that Walt had integrity. I am sure that if someone had done the same thing to the new executive after he had been in Walt’s employ for a while, Walt would have done the same for him. In fact, I have read many different articles, books, and excerpts from people who worked for Walt. When talking about him as a boss, many of them said time and time again that few workers who became established at Disney Studios ever left, voluntary or otherwise, and many were on the Disney payroll for their entire working lives.

It seems to me that there is not enough of this type of integrity today. I am not saying that we shouldn’t be tolerant, but people should stand up for what they believe in. All too often, the loudest voices are the ones who don’t have this kind of integrity. Grace is the gift we extend to those who wrong us, but integrity is what drives the heart to refuse to compromise on matters of principle.

Generations before us held onto it like it was gold. Maybe that’s what the seven dwarfs were mining for all along!

Is Disney Building a New DVC at the Grand Floridian?

Is Disney Building a New DVC at the Grand Floridian?

Last week, plans for a new Disney Vacation Club property were “leaked,” leaving the Disney online community buzzing about a new DVC property at the Grand Floridian.   The proposed building, located on the shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon between the main pool and the Wedding Pavilion, will be a smaller property if the proposed parking lot is any indication, just 200 or so additional parking spaces.  We don’t know now how tall the building will be, but our sources who’ve seen the plans say six or seven stories with views of the Magic Kingdom from the upper floors.  That’s taller than the main Grand Floridian building and many are worried about how this new addition will change the shoreline of the Lagoon, some of which will be reclaimed in the process.

If you’re a big  Disney fan, you know that the idea of a DVC property at the Grand has long been a staple of the Disney rumor mill and you also know that many proposed projects never get off the ground, but our sources who know construction say these plans look very promising.  It seems reasonable too, given the success of Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary Resort, that Disney would want to replicate that success at another Magic Kingdom  resort. This property, unlike the Polynesian, has the land for it.

The question, then, is what kind of DVC property? We know it will be expensive.  With Bay Lake Tower now going for around $140 a point, you can expect higher prices at a DVC located at the Grand Floridian (estimates go as high as $160 per point).  It is, after all, Disney’s flagship resort.  One theory is that this DVC will have concierge rooms, in keeping with the overall feel of the main resort. If this is the case, expect real luxury with high prices.  Would I buy in there? Sure.  It’s one of my favorite resorts.   But I also want to pay for my children’s college!  Still, I think the potential for an amazing experience is there and I’ll definitely stay there, whether I buy in or not.

A couple of things worry me. First, if this building does go up, expect about two years minimum of ground preparation and construction.  This means that brides getting married at the Wedding Pavilion will have a whole new set of concerns to worry about, particularly construction noise.  Noise will also be a concern if you’re staying at the Polynesian.   I also have questions as to how the existing  Grand Floridian will handle transportation and check-in issues with hundreds more guests a day.  And finally and perhaps most importantly, how will a new property change the scenery around the Seven Seas Lagoon, arguably one of the most picturesque places in the Southeast?  I’m trusting Disney to impress me, much in the same way they did with Bay Lake Tower, which seems to have rather seamlessly blended into the existing Contemporary Resort.

So, will you buy into a DVC at the Grand Floridian?

Winning Feels Good…No, Great!

Winning Feels Good...No, Great!

So, I just recently won a Villains Vinylmation through Chip and Co. writer DragynAlly’s blog. It happened literally a minute or two after I tweeted to her that I was determined to win one.

I really do think it was fate. DragnAlly, aka Dana, uses Random.org to determine who the winners for her current contest are. For some reason, the Disney universe thought I was adequate enough to be the chosen one for today.

Once I receive the Vinylmation, I’ll let you all know what it is. I’m excited!

I hope you guys are all checking her blog and commenting on her posts! I want to know if any of our readers win one as well! (Be sure to read the rules on her blog before entering. No spammers allowed!)

Fun Facts About The Cars From The State Farm “Agents On A Mission” Tour

Fun Facts About The Cars From The State Farm “Agents On A Mission” Tour

SIZE MATTERS – The replica cars are the largest production radio-controlled replica cars ever built.

  • At 1000 foot pounds of torque – the electric motors provide enough power to theoretically climb a telephone pole!
  • Finn weighs in around 1,760 lbs.
  • Lightning McQueen weighs in around 2,250 lbs.
  • Mater weighs in at just over 2,700 lbs.

ART IN MOTION — Because of the unique scale of these vehicles, all the exterior pieces had to be fabricated from scratch. No actual “off- the-shelf” car parts could be used. The sculpting process for each vehicle’s body took 6-10 days, totaling 1000-1600 man hours. After the cars were carved in foam, a fiberglass mold was created, and from that the final bodies were produced.

  • The chassis for the cars are Model-T replica frames.
  • Mater is hand-painted, using a proprietary system that creates real rust on his cab and bed.
  • Because the cars had to reflect the designs of the film’s characters, the control systems (switches, lights etc.) had to be built into the various parts of the car. These have been hidden from view.

FILL ‘ER UP — The cars are all electric powered. Each runs on four automotive-style batteries at 48 volts and can run for 30 minutes at full speed.

NO SPEEDING ZONE — The cars can travel up to 10 miles per hour.

REV IT UP — The engine sounds and exhaust sounds are recreated through a 200-watt sound system under the hood.

  • The cars are controlled by a high-tech radio-control system normally used for high-end RC hobby cars.

TRICKY TIRES – Lightning McQueen’s tires are one of a kind due to their unique size and were fabricated by Goodyear specifically for the “Agents on a Mission” tour.

  • Lightning McQueen is so low to the ground that he needs specially designed ramps to get over even the smallest bumps.

YOU’VE GOT THE LOOK — There are three sets of eyes that are held to the windshield by magnets. The fiberglass windshield is imbedded with iron filings which attracts the magnetic eyes.
