WDW Veteran Visitors: It’s a Given

WDW Veteran Visitors: It's a Given

My family and I are what is known as Veteran Visitors to Walt Disney World. During our annual trips, there are traditional practices we always tend to follow even though we don’t plan it that way. Some things are just “givens” when we visit.

Here are some examples:

It’s a given that we will be visiting the Magic Kingdom as our first park.

It’s a given that we will immediately head to Asia whenever we enter the Animal Kingdom park, so we can enjoy Everest first thing.

It’s a given that when we visit the Hollywood Studios, my daughter and I will at some time during the day enjoy “The Voyage of the Little Mermaid” while our macho males in the family enjoy the Stunt Spectacular or Indiana Jones.

It’s a given that if we stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, we will get a drink from the Mara and sit out by the pool on our first night there.

It’s a given that we will have Family Pasta Night with the create-your-own-pasta at the Riverside Mill if we stay at the Port Orleans Riverside.

It’s a given that we will never ride single rider on Test Track because my kids have never been willing to split up the family.

It’s a given that we will enjoy a Monorail Mania Meal on one of the nights during our trip.

It’s a given that we will ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at least twice during the 3:00 parade at MK.

It’s a given that we will visit ‘Ohana on the last night of our trip.

It’s a given that we will be at Downtown Disney on the day we leave to purchase souvenirs at the World of Disney and a new Christmas ornament for each of us at Days of Christmas.

That’s just the way it is. Those “givens” are what makes visiting Walt Disney World just like home for us as veteran visitors. What are your family’s givens? Share them with us.

Oldies But Goodies – Tables In Wonderland, Does It Fit Your Style.

Oldies But Goodies - Tables In Wonderland, Does It Fit Your Style.

Oldies and all other folks put quite a lot of time making decisions about many things before embarking on a Walt Disney World visit. One of these items is dining, after all, everyone has to eat. I’m going to give you some numbers to give you an idea what the Disney Dining Plan (DDP) costs per adult per night so you can compare the benefits of the DDP to the Tables In Wonderland Program.

The DDP includes 1 table service credit, one counter service credit, and one snack credit for approximately $46 per person per night. The Deluxe Dining Plan (DxDP) takes this to 3 table service credits and two snack credits per night and brings the cost to $79 per night.  You may add the Wine and Dine package giving you 1 wine entitlement per night per room for an additional $40 per night. So if you like table service dining and go the whole route, the cost is approximately $99 per person per night (and does not include cocktails). Depending on your dining and beverage preferences this can add up quickly. Please remember that Disney Signature Restaurants require 2 credits per meal.

Enter Tables In Wonderland (TIW) which costs you a total of $100 ($75 if you are an Annual Passholder). What does this get you? You get a full 20% discount on food and beverage (yes alcohol too) purchases in most Disney Table Service Restaurants and many of the lounges. It is also important to note that in resorts with no table service restaurants the TIW discount of 20% also applies at the food courts. You can find a current listing of TIW restaurants here (lounges too). The discounts apply for the TIW card holder and 9 additional people. Technically, there can only be one guest check but you MAY be able to sweet talk your server into two if that’s how it works for you. Another important point, if you use TIW they automatically add an 18% gratuity based on the non discounted price of the meal (not at the food courts) after all, the server and staff have to work just as hard to serve a discounted meal as a discounted meal so in my opinion they should be compensated that way. Dinner Shows are also included but only for the last scheduled show of the day.

If you don’t eat at Signature restaurants and are disciplined enough to stick to only using the allotted dining credits on your visit then the DDP can be very economical. I do not have that kind of self control because there are way too many amazing dining experiences to be had at Walt Disney World. We have used TIW before and will be using it again on our October visit. It offers some distinct advantages that the DDP’s do not have. If you enjoy a cocktail as well as wine with your meals – 20% discount. If you enjoy Signature restaurants there is no penalty (no credits involved) – 20% discount. You are not forced to have extra food that you might not want, you order exactly what you want, no more or no less – 20% discount. I guess the only complaint I hear from people is that you don’t really get a 20% discount but only a 2% discount because of the included tip. I tell those folks that they will likely tip in the 18% range even on the DDP’s because that is the industry standard for the type of excellent service you get at a Disney Restaurant. I hope you find this information helpful and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Disney’s Dumbo 70th Anniversary Edition Coming to Bluray/DVD/Download

Disney’s Dumbo 70th Anniversary Edition Coming to Bluray/DVD/Download

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment invites audiences to let their spirits soar with the release of the beloved animated classic Dumbo, for the first time ever in high definition as a 70th Anniversary Edition, coming on September 20, 2011. The Academy Award®-winning (1942, Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture) favorite will take flight for the first time with a premium restoration in stunning Blu-ray™ highdefinition featuring pristine 7.1 Digital Theater System High-Def Surround Sound, allowing fans to see more, hear more, interact more and share more of this timeless adventure about believing in yourself.

Dumbo: 70th Anniversary Edition will be available for purchase as a 2-Disc Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack (with the suggested retail price of $39.99 U.S./$44.99 Canada), a 1-Disc DVD (with the suggested retail price of $29.99 U.S./$35.99 Canada), High Definition Movie Download (for the suggested retail price of $39.99 U.S./44.99 Canada) and/or Standard Definition Movie Download (for the suggested retail price of $29.99 U.S./$35.99 Canada). All versions come packed with a variety of special bonus features including such features as deleted scenes, interactive games, audio commentary, behind the scenes details and more.

Faced with the daunting task of restoring the film to its original pristine condition, the Walt Disney Studios Restoration Team turned to the US Library of Congress who store the original 70 year old nitrate camera negative in their film vaults, and for reference, to an original 1941 ‘release’ print, held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Using this rare nitrate “dye-transfer” Technicolor print for color reference, the team was able to restore Dumbo to the color settings most likely approved by Walt Disney himself, which will be seen in their full splendor for the first time in 70years, on the Blu-ray debut.

In addition, the rare film print (housed as part of the UCLA Film and Television Archives collection) proved to be the earliest surviving generation of the original audio for Dumbo which provided a unique source from which to build the new Disney Enhanced Home Theatre (DEHT) mix for the Blu-ray release.

Released theatrically in 1941, Dumbo, Walt Disney’s fourth animated film, was an immediate success with audiences and critics alike. In addition to its Academy Award® for BestMusic, Dumbo was also Oscar®-nominated for Best Song, for the haunting lullaby, “Baby Mine.” Additional songs from the film, written by renowned composer Frank Churchill and lyricist Ned Washington, have become popular standards. They include the infectious “When I See an Elephant Fly,” sung by a chorus of hip crows who befriend Dumbo and his friend, Timothy Mouse, and “Pink Elephants on Parade,” which accompanies Dumbo’s feverish dream-sequence.

Bonus Features:

DVD:

The parade also features all your favorite characters in their halloween costumes and a special fireworks show that is NOT to be missed! The Halloween party is also known for unique character meet n’ greets, dance parties with the characters and plenty of costumed guests to admire. Modern Endings: Princesses in Today’s World

Image via Wikipedia

Happily Ever After. Every Disney movie seems to end that way, but especially if it’s a Princess movie! Of course, we don’t live in that kind of a world, do we?

Celebrities are constantly being maligned. Their lives are reported on and distorted beyond recognition. Sometimes it’s unbelievable the headlines we see!

So I wondered:

What kind of headlines would the Disney Princesses make in today’s tabloids?

Well, let’s have a look…

Snow White

Teenage Girl Arrested for Polygamy With Seven Men

Aurora

Parents of Comatose Girl Decide to Remove Life Support

Cinderella

Lonely Woman’s Strange Hobby: Sewing Clothes for Mice

Ariel

Girl Found on Beach Half-naked, Fined, Defendant Speechless

Jasmine

Royalty Involved in Peasant Scandal, Loses Crown

Belle

Woman Turns Down He-man, Marries Man-Beast

Pocahontas

Young Lady Committed, Claims Tree is Grandmother, Talks to Raccoon

Mulan

Girl Charged With Tom-Peepery, Found in Men’s Bathing Pool

Tiana

Family Disowns Daughter for Alternative Lifestyle After Kissing Frog

Rapunzel

Girl Arrested After Striking Man With Frying Pan, Claims Self-Defense

So I guess it’s for the best that these stories take place far, far away in a time long, long ago, and not in our modern world!

Character Dining: How Much Is Too Much?

Character Dining: How Much Is Too Much?

I see this a lot:  A family plans a trip to Disney World and they get the dining plan, which allows them to eat at a wide variety of restaurants on site, but when  they make their advanced dining reservations (ADRs), they end up booking a character meal for almost every day of the trip.  As a travel agent and possibly more so parent as a who’s taken my children to Disney World many times, I want to shout “don’t do it.”  Don’t get me wrong, I like character meals, but hear me out.  There’s a reason why I say this.

Disney World is an amazing place with a lot going on almost 24-hours a day, much more than you can experience in one trip.  It can sometimes be too much for an adult to take in, much less small children.  For someone like me, who really likes to eat, food is a big part of that experience and character meals can really add to your visit:  The character buffets at Disney are surprisingly good and the interaction with the characters is more involved than at a regular meet and greet in the parks.   But at a certain point, you can overdue it.  Add too many character meals to a kids’ schedule and they get a little bored  It’s sort of like opening gifts on Christmas morning:  We all remember how the first few were the most exciting.

Aside from being overwhelmed, one problem with too many character meals, from an adult perspective, is that you miss out on so much good food.  I’ve said before that I’m not a fan of buffets, but I generally think Disney buffets are a cut above what you would find off site.  Having said that, most of these meals are pretty much the same thing over and over.  Why would you want to stick to fried chicken and mac and cheese your entire trip when you can have great, wood-fired pizza or artisan pork?

Here’s what I propose instead:  Do just two character meals for a week-long stay, say Chef Mickey’s and Cinderella’s Royal Table, then pull the “It’s My Trip Too” card and plan a night for everyone at a signature restaurant of the grown-up’s choosing.  Signature restaurants, in case you’re wondering, are the more high-end of Disney’s table service restaurants. They require two table-service credits on the meal plan and offer more sophisticated, but still accessible, fare.  The nice thing about doing a “fancy” restaurant at Disney World, is that they’re all kid-friendly. At home, you may hesitate to take your young children to a white table cloth kind of restaurant, but you don’t have to worry about that at Disney. Every restaurant is set up to accomodate kids, complete with kid friendly menus and some of the best servers you encounter anywhere.  So branch out for a special evening without worrying.  I love a night out at California Grill, located on top of the Contemporary Resort, watching the fireworks and eating a good meal. It is a wonderful celebration and my favorite way to end our vacation.

This still leaves you with a few table-service credits left, so maybe try French food at Chefs de France for lunch or an African-inspired buffet at Boma for dinner.  One thing Disney does exceptoinally well is make sure that every restaurant has something for picky eaters, so don’t worry about accomadating someone who doesn’t like to experiment; even in the most exotic of restaurants, they should be able to find something to please.

Disney chefs work every day to overcome the impression that they’re serving “theme park food.”  Next trip, branch out and treat yourself.  You won’t regret it.

Email her at [email protected] for information on how you can get a free $100, $50, or  $25 Disney gift card when you book a new vacation.  Don’t forget, free dining for August –  September 2011 is now available.

Celebrity Guests Announced for Star Wars Weekends 2011

Star Wars Weekends 2011

Star Wars Weekends 2011 will be a Tour de “Force” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, celebrating the grand opening of the new Star Tours attraction as the Walt Disney World Resort theme park welcomes Jedi, Sith, Ewoks, Wookiees, galactic bounty hunters and stormtroopers for the park’s annual celebration of all-things-Star Wars.

The fun takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 20-June 12, 2011.

James will present another event-first: he will star in a one-man show that showcases some of the many voices he has performed throughout his career, including those from The Clone Wars.

Anthony Daniels

Opening weekend will kick off the month-long event in grand fashion, as fan favorite Anthony Daniels (seen in the photo above at a filming session for the new “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” attraction), who brought C-3PO to life and is the only actor to appear in every theatrical chapter of the Star Wars saga, will make a golden return to the event. Dave Filoni, the talented artist and supervising director of The Clone Wars, also will be a special celebrity guest for Weekend I.
