Disney Requests Extension for Rivers of America Transformation Permit
Disney has requested a 60-day extension to address the South Florida Water Management District’s (SFWMD) concerns regarding the planned transformation of the Rivers of America in Magic Kingdom into a new “Cars”-themed area. The request, submitted by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District on behalf of Walt Disney World, allows additional time to respond to a six-page Request for Additional Information (RAI) issued by the district.
The extension was filed by Mandee Brandt, the District’s Senior Water Resource Engineer, and cited the need for more time to prepare a response to the RAI, which was dated September 11, 2024. The original permit application, submitted on August 12, included plans for basin stormwater modifications to accommodate the construction of new attractions in the area surrounding Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America.
The RAI from SFWMD called for clarifications and 20 specific adjustments to the permit. After receiving no immediate response, the district issued a notice requiring an update within 10 days or the permit would be denied.
The “Cars” expansion, planned as part of Frontierland, will feature two attractions: a thrilling rally race through the mountains, possibly using a ride system similar to Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, and another unannounced family-friendly experience. Disney previously announced that construction is expected to begin in early 2025, which is still possible provided these permitting issues are able to be straightened out.
Meet the New Pride on the Savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Three young lions have officially joined the savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, taking up residence in the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction. Mshango, Zahara, and Neema, a trio of siblings, are settling into their new home atop the kopjes rocks of the Harambe Wildlife Reserve, where they are delighting guests with their playful energy and commanding roars.
The addition of these lions comes just weeks ahead of the theatrical release of Mufasa: The Lion King on December 20. The live-action film is expected to inspire millions with its portrayal of nature’s beauty and the importance of habitat preservation—a message that resonates across the savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In conjunction with the film’s release, Disney is relaunching its Protect the Pride conservation campaign. The initiative supports the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund (LRF), which works to double the wild lion population by 2050 through habitat restoration and protection efforts in Africa.
As part of Disney’s commitment to wildlife conservation, the lions also play a critical role in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP). This program promotes genetic diversity and sustainable breeding for animal populations, many of which are at risk in the wild. In time, Mshango, Zahara, and Neema may breed with members of other prides, contributing to the future of their species.
Guests on Kilimanjaro Safaris can now observe the new arrivals as they adapt to their surroundings, offering a closer look at these iconic animals in a setting designed to reflect their natural habitat. Disney’s conservation efforts aim to foster a deeper connection between visitors and the wild, encouraging ongoing support for initiatives like Protect the Pride.
“Disney ❤ Notre-Dame de Paris” Experience Debuts at Disneyland Paris
Disneyland Paris is honoring the reopening of the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral with a limited-time event that combines storytelling, creativity, and reverence. From December 5 to 14, Sleeping Beauty Castle will transform into the stage for “Disney ❤ Notre-Dame de Paris”, a breathtaking nighttime preshow that celebrates the spirit of the cathedral and Disney’s beloved animated classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
The preshow, set just before the nightly “Disney Illuminations”, brings a bold new perspective to the songs we know and love. Featuring a custom musical arrangement performed by the London Symphony Orchestra at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, the preshow reimagines classic tracks from The Hunchback of Notre Dame with modern twists that complement the timeless beauty of the cathedral itself. Using state-of-the-art technology, the show aims to evoke the same awe and inspiration that Notre-Dame has instilled in visitors for centuries.

Johnny Depp Returning for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is a Possibility
Variety recently reported that a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film is in development, and Johnny Depp’s involvement is being seriously considered. Given the character’s iconic status and the franchise’s reliance on his charisma, his return could revitalize the series and rekindle fan enthusiasm.
Disney hasn’t yet reached out to Johnny Depp, but the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise remains uncertain. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is currently developing two scripts: one that incorporates Depp’s iconic character, Captain Jack Sparrow, and another that doesn’t. As a source told Variety, “Nothing has been ruled out,” suggesting that Depp’s return to the franchise is still a possibility.
The future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is shrouded in mystery. While details about the upcoming film are scarce, a spin-off starring Margot Robbie is also on the horizon.
Despite the potential financial benefits of a Depp return, it remains uncertain whether he would be willing to reprise his iconic role. In previous testimony, Depp expressed deep resentment towards Disney following the fallout from his legal battle with Amber Heard. He even stated that he would never work with the studio again.
While Warner Bros. also severed ties with Depp, recent reports suggest a potential shift in his stance regarding Disney. However, the studio has already explored alternative options, including a potential reboot with a new lead actor, such as Austin Butler. This decision was met with mixed reactions from fans, many of whom remain loyal to Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow.
To balance fan expectations and the need for fresh storytelling, Disney is aiming for a delicate approach. The upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean film will serve as a reboot, paying homage to the original series while introducing new elements. Sean Bailey, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, emphasized the importance of honoring the past while forging a new path. As for Depp’s involvement, Bailey remained noncommittal, leaving the door open to speculation.
The question now is whether Disney will reconsider its stance and invite Depp back to the franchise that made him a global star.

“Wondrous Journeys” nighttime spectacular and “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!” parade will temporarily pause to make way for seasonal Halloween and Holidays entertainment offerings, then resume at a later time.

Even more details and magical touches will be coming to the resort for the 70th celebration.
Brilliant, colorful décor will adorn the entire resort, including an elegant medallion on Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and their pals will all come dressed for the party in Town Square in Disneyland Park, in custom looks designed just for the occasion.
Disneyland Park will debut a new character cavalcade called “Mickey and Friends Celebrate Happy!” As it winds its way along the parade route, favorite characters will encourage you to dance and clap along in an energetic and contemporary celebration of seven decades of happiness.
In the evenings at California Adventure, the exterior of Carthay Circle Restaurant will invite everyone to “celebrate happy” during a special moment filled with music, lights, and projection effects. And at Disneyland, the facade of “it’s a small world” will also get a new projection show.
Plus, created in honor of the anniversary, an upbeat new theme song “Celebrate Happy” will be heard throughout various entertainment offerings.
