"More than a place to stay, it's a place to start"-A look at Aulani

Everyone knows Disney tells the best stories, have you heard the story behind Disney’s newest destination, Aulani? Located in Ko Olina, Hawaii Aulani will say “aloha” and open its doors to guests on August 29, 2011.

What can you expect when you arrive at the Disney Resort and Spa in Ko Olina? A breathtaking tropical paradise with accommodations only a Disney imagineer could create; with vibrant tropical colors, patterns and textures and Menehune, the “magical people” of Hawaiian legends.

Disney refers to Aulani as, “more than a place to stay, it’s a place to start”. Settle in to all the comforts Disney imagineering has prepared and step out into all the adventures that Hawaii holds. Local experts guide you through cultural excursions to experience the legends of the land. Learn to dance (Hula), speak and cook like a Hawaiian while immersed in this tropical paradise.

Be sure to say hello to some of your Disney favorites (in their vacation attire!) and send the little adventurers to Aunty’s Beach House-a kids only club where Hawaiian adventures are as big as they guests they welcome.

Connect as a family in a different Disney way, with a picturesque sunset ceremony, special character dinners, family activities, and pool parties.

Aulani sits on twenty one acres, filled with ten recreation facilities, two lounges, four restaurants, and an 18,000 square foot spa with fifteen treatment rooms and a fitness center. There are 36,695 square feet of outdoor venues and plenty of activities to choose from!

Immerse your family in the culture, beauty and comforts of Hawaii, Disney style. Aulani is now accepting reservations; to book your dream vacation contact your Disney travel agent!

Jack Black Sent a HS Band to Disneyland!

Jack Black Sent a HS Band to Disneyland!

As a former high school marching band geek kid who actually marched down Main Street U.S.A. during the SpectroMagic Parade, I found this story incredibly amazing and needed to share.  The story was originally found on TMZ

Jack Black just dropped more than $10,000 so a group of music students could travel to Disneyland to perform in a parade tomorrow … TMZ has learned.

The whole thing came to fruition thanks to Jack’s mom — who lives in Tonasket, Washington and is a HUGE supporter of the local music programs.

We’re told the band — made up of local high school and middle school students — entered a Disneyland contest and were selected to perform at the Magic Kingdom … but there was a catch — they had to pay for their own travel expenses.

We’re told the community was rallying to raise the cash — when Jack caught wind and came through with a MONSTER donation.

The band arrived in L.A. yesterday after a two-day bus trip and will perform in the Town Square parade this afternoon. After that, we’re told the kids will all have dinner with their famous benefactor.

“And we shall teach rock ‘n’ roll to the world.”

And, as TMZ reported, Jack Black showed up at Disneyland not only for a dinner, but to cheer them on during their parade!**

The Magic Behind the ‘Company’ getting to know Lisa Battista

The Magic Behind the 'Company' getting to know Lisa Battista

Name: Lisa Battista
Where do you live: Jersey Shore and no, I don’t know the cast of that Jersey Shore.
How long have you been with Chip and Company? One wonderful year.
What topics do you write about? Whatever strikes my fancy but primarily traveling to Disney with small children.
Favorite C&C Writer? How could I choose? They’re all amazing.
Do you have a Blog or Website? I have two! Beyond the Attractions has more information about my Disney guide book, Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers and I’m one of the creators of WDW Fan Zone, a Disney fan site.
Have a Facebook Page or Twitter? http://www.facebook.com/beyondtheattractions and @DisneyExplorer
Favorite Disney Website other than Chip and Company? I suppose I can’t pick my own, can I? There are so many well-written and well-researched Disney sites that picking a favorite is nearly impossible. My love of food and cooking probably gives the slightest edge to The Disney Food Blog.
What % of your clothes and house is decorated with Disney Gear? Other than my Grumpy t-shirt that I purchased ten years ago, I don’t have any Disney clothing. Disney photographs hang on one wall of the office and the Christmas season heralds the unpacking of many Disney ornaments.
Chip or Dale? It’s a tie.

About the Parks:

What’s your favorite Disney park? Epcot
How many Times have you been to the Disney Parks? I’ve lost count but it’s over 20.
What’s your First Disney Memory? Being able to explore Disney World with my sister and no parents! We were allowed to take the monorail to the Magic Kingdom for the afternoon.
What is your favorite Ride, Show, and Event? Toy Story Mania, IllumiNations, Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival.
Where is your favorite place to get your grub on? Bistro de Paris
What’s your favorite snack? Crepes from the France Pavilion and Baklava from the Morocco Pavilion.
You have the whole park to yourself. Tell us what park it would be and your plan of attack: Epcot during the Food and Wine Festival. I would stroll around World Showcase and eat around the World at my leisure without any lines or crowds. The evening would be topped off with an uninterrupted view of IllumiNations.
Least Favorite Disney Ride or Attractions? Country Bear Jamboree
What’s missing from the Parks? Better sit-down dining options at Animal Kingdom.
Which thing do you wish Disney would bring back? Cranium Command
What do you bring to the park with you? Water, ponchos, sunscreen. If the kids are with us, lots more.
Do you fly, drive or take a Magic Carpet to the Disney Parks? Fly
Who is your most and least favorite Disney character and why? I like the classics so Mickey is my favorite character. Stitch is my least favorite.
Dining Plan, OOP, or Bring Food with you? Definitely out-of-pocket with Tables in Wonderland. My husband doesn’t like to stay within the lines of the Dining Plan.
To ADR or Not to ADR? Is this a serious question? 🙂 Definitely ADR. At the 180-day mark.
Events at the park that cost extra good idea or should be included with park admission? Good idea. This will keep the cost of admission lower for guests who don’t have any interest in the events.
When is your next trip to WDW or DL? May

Everything Else Disney:

What is your favorite Disney Movie? The Little Mermaid
Do you do any Disney Collections? No.
Have you been on a Disney Cruise or Adventures by Disney? No, I have an unnatural fear of cruise ships and we’re saving Adventures by Disney until our children are older.
Ever been to DLRP or TDL? Not yet.

Finally what does Disney Mean to you? Disney means a chance to create priceless memories and spend time together as a family in a place surrounded by joy and magic.

Definitely Out Of  Pocket and generally using Tables In Wonderland

To ADR or Not to ADR:

  • Lee gave us a glimpse into his psyche when he asked the question To Wear Mouse Ears, or Not To Wear Mouse Ears. You can count on the facts from a man who has many, many, many, many, many sets of ears.
  • Melissa just got back from Walt Disney World and did an exceptional review of the new Wild Africa Trek at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. You can check out Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 at these links.

Disney Worker Injured at Animal Kingdom

Disney Worker Injured at Animal Kingdom

Our thoughts and prayers go out to a a Walt Disney World worker that was rushed to the hospital Sunday after suffering a head injury while working on a ride in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Disney officials said the maintenance worker was working on the “Primeval Whirl” attraction when the accident happened around 3:45pm.

The employee was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition. The attraction had been closed to guests for refurbishment.

“Our concern at this time is for the cast member. We’ve sent a fellow cast member to the hospital to provide assistance to him and his family,” said a Walt Disney World spokesperson.

Amber Pollock (Cassie Scerbo) is the queen bee of Patrick Boone High School, and the only thing missing to her reign is the Prom Queen title. Having worked for years towards obtaining the crown and most popular girl status, Amber lets nothing and no one stand in her way. That bad behavior comes back to literally haunt her and others when a freak accident at Prom ends Amber’s short, nearly-perfect life and, facing an unpleasant after-life, she is given a task that could save her soul – to get the school’s least popular girl to be voted Prom Queen. Amber is sure her future is sunk when she learns her charge is none other than Lisa Sommers (Lindsey Shaw), a shy girl who makes clay-mation films with her three best friends and whose fashion sense is not up to Amber’s standards. As for Lisa herself, the last thing she wants is to be Prom Queen, but when Amber offers to help her get the attention of her crush, Nick, Lisa gives Amber the benefit of the doubt. Will a head-to-toe makeover and some confidence building advice really be able to turn a shy and awkward teen into high school social power player? Only Heaven knows!

Pictures’ hit film franchise, leading into its highly anticipated theatrical release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2” (in theaters on July 15, 2011). Newsies Seize the Stage

Newsies Seize the Stage

This fall, the world will know a new theatrical version of Disney’s 1992 movie musical — Newsies — and D23 has the inside scoop from the show’s lyricist, Jack Feldman.

There are a handful of Disney movie musicals that were just meant to be full-fledged stage shows of their own. Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid, with their moving songs and beloved stories, are a few of these Disney masterpieces that seemed to transition seamlessly into a theatrical version. But there are also a few Disney films — perfectly fit for the stage — that are waiting in the wings to be adapted for a live audience. Newsies is one of those films that has “theatrical stage show” written all over it. On Thursday, September 15 (though the official press opening is scheduled for September 25), nearly 20 years since this tuneful film debuted in theaters, Disney’s Newsies will finally step into the spotlight. Paper Mill Playhouse in Milburn, New Jersey, is kicking off the first production of Disney’s Newsies musical. From there it will be up to Paper Mill’s cast to “carry the banner” and make the stage version a headlining success.

The new Newsies musical has been written with utmost care, not to mention by some of the biggest headliners from Broadway. Disney Theatrical Group gathered together a triumvirate of talent to pen the script and score. That includes eight-time Academy Award®-winning composer Alan Menken, four-time Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein, and noted lyricist Jack Feldman. Jack and Alan collaborated on the original soundtrack for the 1992 Newsies film and they’re back to rework the script for the stage with Harvey steering the story.

It’s been a long time coming for a stage show version of Newsies. For years, Newsies has been the single most requested title by professional and amateur theatre groups, according to the world’s largest dramatic licensing agent Music Theater International (MTI). “Once Disney decided they wanted to do a stage version of Newsies they asked Alan Menken and I if we wanted to be involved because it was not only going to be translating the movie to the stage, but they also said it would require some new songs, which we were definitely up for,” says Jack. “We both sort of jumped at it. There wasn’t really much of a hesitation.” The new stage version will introduce several brand-new songs by the original team. But not to worry, the original story and most of the film’s songs will remain intact.

Newsies is inspired by the real life Newsboy Strike of 1899 in New York City, when newsboy Kid Blink led the ragged orphans and runaways known as newsies on a two-week long action against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. Disney’s take on this piece of history tells the tale of a newsie named Jack Kelly, who dreams of a better life far from the hardship of the streets and gathers a group of young paperboys along the way to greatness. “The bones of the story and many of the characters are as they were in the movie,” Jack reveals. “It’s still the story of a Newsboy Strike of 1899 and its still led by Jack, but we’re making some changes to some of the characters and how the story is told.” They’re mixing up the song list, too. But Jack assures us that all our favorites will still be included. “A couple of the songs from the film will probably not appear in the stage show, but we’re also writing a couple of brand-new songs,” he says. “A couple of songs that are familiar to people from the score are used in slightly different ways in terms of where they are in the story. All the big numbers are there.” No doubt you’ll walk away from the stage show with the same feeling you did when you saw the film — a whimsical arm punch of optimism.

As for the Paper Mill production, September 15 is right around the corner and there’s still plenty of work to do. “We’re pretty far along,” Jack assures. “Harvey has written several drafts of the script and Alan and I have basically completed the score. There are still a few things we want to tinker with and a few numbers we may want to swap out. But it’s mostly there.” And what about after Paper Mill? Is Newsies Broadway bound? “The purpose of doing the show was never to build a Broadway production,” Jack notes. “The purpose, and they were very clear about this, was — with so many requests from schools, theater groups, camps and all sorts of other places — to do a stage version that could be licensed. A lot of people were really anxious for it, which really makes you feel great.” For this year, Newsies fans can revel in the show’s updated story, new characters and songs through the Paper Mill production. Beyond that, only time will tell.

Not only is the musical a step in evolving the original film’s score and story it’s a chance for the original team to take a look at their work and make some edits. “We got the chance to go back and polish what we never got to do during the film,” Jack says. “A couple of the songs are now used to build a more emotional connection with the audience and make the characters and their relationships with each other deeper and more like that of a family. One of the things about this show that moves me is that even though it takes place over a century ago, its very relevant to today.” The heart of the Newsies story is about overcoming all odds. “Newsboys are not even part of our lives anymore and, still, the story is so relevant to the world today,” Jack adds. “It’s what makes the story very specific, but also extremely universal.”

Newsies begins at Paper Mill Playhouse on Thursday, September 15 and will be performed eight times a week, Wednesday through Sunday through Sunday, October 16. Three, four and five show subscription packages are available beginning February 17, starting at $84. If you want to ensure that you will get a ticket to see Newsies, become a Paper Mill Playhouse subscriber. Single tickets will go on sale this summer and range in price from $25 to $96.
