Ask a Disney Question: How Late do Characters Stay at Meals?

Ask a Disney Question: How Late do Characters Stay at Meals?

This question comes from Dawn, who writes:

I have a question about dining. We want to take our 2 children to The Garden Grill for supper and the only reservation I could find was for 7:45 and it says it closes at 8pm. My question is….will the characters be leaving at 8pm or do they stick around until everyone is gone? My son is handicapped and I have to feed him and it takes us a little longer at restaurants than the average family because I have to feed him and then feed myself or vice versa depending on my son. Thanks for any information!! Love all the info on your site as well!! Dawn

Hi, Dawn.

Thank you for reading the site and for your question; we love it when our readers get involved.  This shouldn’t be an issue at all. If you’re concerned, you can do one of two things: 1)   Show up a little early and hope to get seated earlier; or 2) make a note that you’ll be taking a bit longer when you check in and again with your server when you’re seated. One thing that Disney does really well is make sure that all of its guests have access to the same experience, regardless of disabilities.  Most cast members will go out of their way to help.

On a personal note, we’re not huge fans of complaining over little things at  Disney World as we recognize that cast members are human too and that they work long, hard hours–we don’t really care if we don’t get a “have a magical day” at the end of the night or a towel animal!  But, if you feel you’re not being treated fairly, feel free to go all “momma bear” on the manager. You son deserves the same character interaction as any other kid.

Again, thanks for your question and have a wonderful trip. Please let us know how it goes.

Reduce-Reuse-Recycle: How Disney Cruise Line is going green

Reduce-Reuse-Recycle: How Disney Cruise Line is going green

You are familiar with the 3 R’s of recycling, and you’ve already heard how Walt Disney World is going green, but what you’re probably less familiar with is how Disney Cruise Line puts these into operation on a daily basis.

Reduce:
1. Instead of wasting more than 20,000 plastic bags, Disney Cruise Line has placed cloth laundry bags in each stateroom to minimize the waste of plastic onboard.

2. Each vessel has an environmental officer onboard, it’s his job to monitor all of the recycling and ship’s environmental processes.. They are specifically trained in “maritime environmental regulations and systems” and they pass on that knowledge to all other crew members and officers.

3. To reduce the resistance in the water a special coating is placed on the ships. The coating is 100% non-toxic and increases the fuel efficiency by reducing the resistance of the water.

Reuse:
1. All Disney Cruise Line ships have AWPS (Advanced Wastewater Purification Systems). This process takes onboard wastewater and purifies it until it’s beyond the level required to meet international shipping standards.

2. The condensation from the air conditioners is also put to good use. The water is purified, recycled and used in onboard laundry facilities and to wash the ships decks.

3. The heat from power generators onboard provides the energy to transform tons of sea water into useable water on the ships each day.

Recycle:
1. Those shiny banisters you see around the ship are another example of recycling. The stair case banisters, as well as virtually everything else is cleaned with biodegradable or organic cleaning products.

2. Vehicles and machinery on Castaway Cay (Disney’s private island) are powered by a special “bio-fuel” that’s made onboard. The used cooking oil from the galley (kitchen) is transformed into a useable fuel that powers the machines on the island!

3. Disney’s ships aren’t just pretty, they’re smart too! The flooring and carpet is made of sustainable, organic and recyclable materials. The new ships are designed to function more “hydrodynamically”, so they are more efficient in the water and use less energy.

Being environmentally friendly isn’t only the responsibility of the cruise line, it’s also the responsibility of the cruise-ER, YOU! You can’t manufacture flooring from recycled materials or change cooking oil into fuel..but there are plenty of things you CAN do to help!

Help:

1. Reduce the energy wasted in your stateroom. When you are aboard the Disney Magic or the Disney Wonder, turn off your television and stateroom lights when you aren’t using them. On the Dream and the Fantasy the stateroom is built “smart”, requiring your key to be a slot in order for your electricity to work. That means when you leave and take your room key with you, the stateroom powers down.

2. Reuse your bath towels. 500,000 gallons of salt water is converted to fresh water for use onboard everyday. While this process is very effective, you can help avoid an increase by reusing your towels and turning the water off while you brush your teeth.

3. Recycle your bottles and cans! Each trash receptacle onboard is divided for cans, bottles and waste. Help the crew by disposing of your items properly, then they can spend less time sorting trash and more time making your cruise magical!

Fun facts-Disney Cruise Line has:
-Eliminated more than 4,600 tons of metals, glass, plastic and paper through recycling
-Removed 31,000 lbs or trash and debris from beaches and waterways -Conserved tons of fresh water each day by recycling condensation
-Inspired 3,100 children in the Cayman Islands with programs such as Disney Planet Challenge .

If you’re inspired to find out more about Disney’s environmental and conservation you’re off to a great start!

Disney Salutes Reedy Creek Improvement District Leader Tom DeWolf

Disney Salutes Reedy Creek Improvement District Leader Tom DeWolf

More than a generation ago when Walt and Roy Disney were dreaming of transforming citrus groves and rural swampland into what would become Walt Disney World Resort, Tom DeWolf was right there with them thinking of plans to deliver the roads, utilities and other municipal services that would help make that dream a reality.

After 46 years of service to Reedy Creek Improvement District, including his tenure as the first district administrator and later serving as chairman of Reedy Creek’s Board of Supervisors for the past 25 years, DeWolf is retiring from the board but he leaves behind an amazing legacy.

“Tom DeWolf is one of those rare individuals who has played a major role in changing, for the better, his home state of Florida,” said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “Great teams need great leaders, and I truly don’t think Walt Disney World would be the place it is today were it not for the foundations laid so many years ago and the careful stewardship Tom DeWolf has extended to the District over the years.”

DeWolf says he’s leaving Reedy Creek Improvement District in great hands. Vice Chairman Don Greer, who has served on the board since 1975, will take over as chairman. Retired Reedy Creek District Administrator Tom Moses will replace DeWolf on the board.

After presiding over more than 100 service award ceremonies for Reedy Creek emergency services, DeWolf became the center of attention as the district’s firefighters and paramedics came together to honor at the longtime board chairman at his retirement ceremony. DeWolf also received a memento for earning the prestigious Colonel Joe Potter award, one of only a handful of recipients who have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to Reedy Creek Improvement District.

DeWolf told well-wishers that he was touched by all of the gifts and accolades – especially the unveiling of a new name for the room where board members will meet each month: The Thomas B. DeWolf Boardroom.

‘The Little Mermaid’ Attraction Opens June 3 in Disney California Adventure Park

‘The Little Mermaid’ Attraction Opens June 3 in Disney California Adventure Park

Guests will enter the enchanting story of “The Little Mermaid,” complete with characters and songs from the Academy Award-winning Disney animated motion picture, when they board The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, premiering Friday, June 3, in Disney California Adventure park at the Disneyland Resort.

Set in and around Ariel’s underwater world and located inside a new space on Paradise Pier, the new attraction combines the enduring appeal of a classic Disney “dark ride” with wonderful technological innovations to offer guests a personal journey into the scenes of the film.  The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure adds to the excitement of Disney Soundsational Summer, June 3 through Sept 5, a season that offers guests even more ways to make special memories at the Disneyland Resort.

Adventurers on the attraction will feel as if they are descending below the ocean’s surface, one of the special effects that take this “dark ride” to a new level of sophistication.  Once “under the sea,” guests will find themselves immersed in the classic story of “The Little Mermaid,” sharing Ariel’s adventure through advanced Audio-Animatronics technology, a magical cast of characters and a captivating musical score that will entice everyone to sing along.

“Being involved in this attraction is a dream come true for me,” said Lisa Girolami, Walt Disney Imagineer and Senior Show Producer for The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure.  “I watched the movie when it first came out and I’ve seen it many, many times since.  To be able to create Ariel’s world and bring it to our guests, and then get to watch the faces of the kids and parents as they come through here, is just going to be the best thing ever.”

‘Out of the sea … Wish I could be … Part of that world’

The fun begins outside the attraction, where the building housing The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure is a new landmark along Paradise Pier. Its Victorian Exposition-style exterior,  including a statue of King Triton and relief carvings of frolicking mermaids (Ariel’s sisters), was inspired by the spectacular pavilions found in the classic seaside amusement parks of the early 20th century.
The ride loading area features an 86-foot hand-painted mural depicting the characters from “The Little Mermaid.” By night, the building will be outlined in thousands of lights, serving as a gateway to Paradise Pier.
Guests begin their journey by boarding their own colorful “clamshell” ride vehicles, part of the Omnimover ride system that is familiar to fans of the “Doom Buggies” in the Haunted Mansion attraction in Disneyland park. The Omnimover, a Walt Disney Imagineering design, gives passengers a point-of-view experience, directing their attention to the key scenes in the attraction.
Scuttle, the tale-spinning seagull, welcomes guests as they embark on their adventure, doing his best to tell the story of Ariel’s ambition to leave her ocean home and become part of the human world.

‘I wanna be …Walking around on those – what do you call ’em? Oh – feet!’
To meet Ariel and participate in her adventure, guests must first head “under the sea.” A combination of special effects creates a sense of descending to the ocean floor, all without leaving the clamshell vehicle.
The first locale on the underwater journey is Ariel’s grotto, where she keeps the treasures she has found on land – whozits, whatzits and thingamabobs – and sings “Part of Your World.” The Audio-Animatronics figure of Ariel features some remarkable magic touches, including an underwater “floating” red hair effect.
Next, in a dazzling musical extravaganza with an underwater party atmosphere, dozens of singing and playing marine creatures (“the carp with the harp, the newt with the flute”) try to encourage Ariel to remain “Under the Sea.” The conductor, of course, is Sebastian the crab.

‘It won’t cost much … Just your voice! … You poor unfortunate soul’

Despite the warnings, Ariel is determined to visit the Sea Witch to find a way to become human. Ursula’s lair is another stunning scene, featuring her slithering henchmen Flotsam and Jetsam and Ursula herself – 7½-feet tall and 12-feet wide, from tentacle tip to tentacle tip. Ursula sings her signature piece, “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”

Next, as Ariel’s wish to be human is granted, guests follow her up to the ocean surface, where they witness Ariel’s friends encouraging Prince Eric to “Kiss the Girl.” This inspires a stormy response from the villainous Ursula and leads to the finale, which holds some surprises – even for those who know and love the motion picture.

Created by Walt Disney Imagineering, The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure features the characters from the beloved motion picture, including many of the original voice talents, and is enhanced with the iconic award-winning songs of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Glen Keane, supervising animator and character designer for Ariel in the film, was a creative consultant in the attraction’s development.

“Many times I’ve thought, ‘Why didn’t we have a Mermaid attraction sooner?’“ Keane said. “But now I’m glad we didn’t. They’ve done this one so well.”

Walt Disney World Character Greeting Primer

Walt Disney World Character Greeting Primer

How to make the most of your encounters with Disney superstars.

Walt Disney World makes magic real for Guests every day. A large part of that escape to fantasy comes by brining beloved characters to life in the form of character greetings. Here are some pointers on where to find a few of your favorites, as well as tips on what to keep in mind once you find them.

Find Out Ahead of Time Where Your Favorite Character Will Be

Do some research before your trip to make sure you’ll be able to locate your top- priority character. A simple inquiry on any WDW forum should suffice. Each park’s Guest Relations is also helpul in locating specific characters, as is any character handler Cast Member you see with another character within the parks. It saves time in the long run to know where to
find your favorite before you arrive, but if you don’t the Cast Members are still ample help.

Know Where the “Bargains” Are

A bargain means several characters greeting in one convenient location. Often it saves time to know where this is implemented.

For instance, you could spend a fair amount of time tracking down Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and Donald all individually at Magic Kingdom . . . or, you could head to Epcot and wait in one line to meet all five of them at the Epcot Character Spot (though you’ll still meet each of them separately). That’s more like it! Granted, the line gets a bit lengthy for the Epcot Character Spot given the popularity and convenience of the entire Fab Five in the same place, but overall the wait is worth it (and, if you go first thing in the morning, there’s hardly be a wait at all).

Other locations also benefit from this “one spot, many characters” convenience. At Magic Kingdom, Town Square Theater allows the the option of wait in one line to meet Mickey and Minnie together, or entering a separate line that leads to Cinderella, Aurora, and Belle (though you’ll meet each princess individually). Over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Sorcerer Mickey’s Hat hosts some of Mickey’s friends in the mornings; they have especially short lines right at park opening. Also at DHS, be sure to stop by The Magic of Disney Animation during the 5:00 hour. In addition to the characters that are present in this building all day long (which currently includes Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and the Incredibles), the 5:00 hour also sees an explosion of random characters, many of them with rather short lines. You can literally jump from line to line, and before you know it, you’ve met a dozen or so characters. At Animal Kingdom, Mickey and friends are all to be found at Camp Minnie-Mickey. You’ll have to wait in separate lines for each of them, but there’s no searching around trying to find all of them.

Typically, individual characters have shorter lines than group greetings. You simply have to consider whether you’d like to wait in many, shorter individual lines or fewer, longer group lines.

Consider a Character Meal

There are many character meals to choose from. A full list of Walt Disney World character dining locations can be found on the resort’s official website (on the left sidebar, click “Dining Experience” and then select “Character Dining”).

Character dining is a great way to have a relaxed meeting with some of your favorites. Characters make their way around the restaurant and come to you; no flagging down necessary.

If you’re dining during a less-crowded time of day (like a very late morning breakfast), you’re likely to have even better character interaction, having a good chance of seeing each of them more than once. This creates some humorous running gags, if you will, and establishes a fun relationship between your family and the characters.

Respect the Character

It’s important to keep in mind the boundaries of the character and to respect some of the limitedness the character may have. It helps to have autograph books open and pens ready while you’re waiting in line; not only does it speed up the wait for everyone else, but it also excuses the characters from having to flip the thin autograph book pages with their big furry paws. For the latter reason, characters also prefer large pens or sharpies so that they can have a better grip on what they’re writing with. This also ensures a more quality signature for you, the Guest!

It’s also respectful to keep in mind the characters’ sight lines and hearing. Make sure you speak to them clearly and loudly so that you’re able to say what you mean with as little confusion as possible, remembering that most of them can only respond to you in pantomime.

Have Fun

Keeping within the characters’ safety boundaries doesn’t mean that you can’t have little fun. Characters love to interact with Guests, and always like when you mention something specific to their movie or personality. Asking Mary Poppins where Bert is can serve as an excellent conversation starter, while telling Donald that Mickey is #1 can spiral into a hilarious fit from the jealous duck. Some characters naturally start the interaction themselves; Stitch is always mischievous and Goofy is always extra clumsy. Thinking about what you’re going to tell the character or coming up with a unique question to ask the character is an excellent idea for helping pass the time in line.

Many of the characters that inhabit Walt Disney World are nothing short of childhood heroes, and meeting them in person is a huge deal. All of these suggestions can help you as a Guest and as a family have better-quality character greetings during your Disney vacation.

Say hi to Mickey for me!
