Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort wins AAA Five Diamond Award

Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Once again, Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has been awarded the coveted AAA Five-Diamond Award, the highest AAA honor for a restaurant. This is the 11th year (first awarded in 2000), and V&A’s is the only restaurant in Central Florida and one of only three in Florida, along with L’Escalier and The Restaurant at the Four Seasons, both in Palm Beach. Only 55 restaurants made the 2011 list, including the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

At the helm of Victoria & Albert’s are manager and sommelier Israel Perez, Chef Scott Hunnel and Master Pastry Chef Erich Herbitschek. The ultimate in fine dining, the menu features Modern American cuisine with products sourced around the world, with wine pairing offered with each course. Impeccable service creates a gracious dining experience.

“It’s an honor to be recognized for the work that the entire team does,” said Chef Scott Hunnel. “It’s all about the consistency of what we try to do, and the continuous evolution of the restaurant,” he continued. “We all work together to achieve that goal, and continue to search for ways of doing things better.”

Wednesday with Walt: Master of Sneakiness

Wednesday with Walt: Master of Sneakiness

With my youngest child graduating last week, I have been on an emotional roller coaster. I feel rather like Marlin in “Finding Nemo” or James in “College Road Trip” in that both of these dads had to learn lessons in letting go and letting their children grow up. Being a very hands-on mom I often find myself struggling with what I know in my mind versus what my heart says. Josh being the baby has magnified this battle of wills. I think it is important for young adults to figure out things for themselves and they sometimes must learn the hard way. Still, I absolutely love this story that Lillian Disney told about Walt and I think he definitely had the right idea.

Walt wanted his girls to “reach” for what they wanted. He wanted them to develop a level of independence. Still, he wanted to make sure they were safe while doing itJ.

In the early 1950’s, when their daughters were around my son’s age, the family was in New York. According to Lillian, the girls begged their father to take them to Washington D.C., but Walt flatly refused.

“If you want to go,” he said, “go ahead. But I’m not going with you.”

They asked him when and how they might go.

“Suit yourself,” he said testily. “You’re old enough to think for yourselves. Go down and ask the porter; he’ll tell you about trains.”

Lillian recounted, “Wide-eyed and nervous never having traveled alone, the girls trooped downstairs. And do you know what their father did? The minute they left the room, he called the porter and told him exactly what he wanted done. Then he called the hotel in Washington and gave explicit instructions.”

In 1952, Walt took Lillian, Diane, Sharon, a niece and a friend of Diane’s on a splurge trip to Europe and he followed much the same procedure.

The girls had the time of their lives, of course, and they never even knew Walt had done that until an article was published in The American Magazine in August, 1955.

Letting go is a good thing, but I can certainly understand the sneaky manner in which Walt took care of things. Maintaining our peace of mind while our children are “reaching” is worth an awful lot to a parent. I wouldn’t be surprised if I soon felt compelled to follow Walt’s lead and ‘allow’ a similar type of trip myself.

Disney’s Primeval Whirl will remain closed throughout summer

Disney's Primeval Whirl will remain closed throughout summer

According to the Orlando Sentinel the Animal Kingdom’s coaster Primeval Whirl will remain closed  as federal investigators continue examining the death of a resort mechanic who was killed while working on the attraction in March.

Disney recently extended the closure of Primeval Whirl, a spinning coaster in Disney’s Animal Kingdom that has been shut down since January for maintenance, until at least Sept. 14. The reopening of the ride, initially scheduled for April, already had been postponed once, until early June.

The new date coincides with a six-month deadline facing the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration to complete its investigation into the death of Russell Roscoe, a 52-year-old attractions mechanic who was struck by one of the attraction’s ride vehicles on March 13. Roscoe, who lived in Sumter County, suffered a massive head injury and died the following day.

Disney said Tuesday that some of the planned maintenance for Primeval Whirl had to be pushed back to accommodate the accident investigation. The resort said the new reopening date is not related to OSHA’s timeline.

“The refurbishment was delayed as a result of the investigation,” Disney spokesman Andrea Finger said.

Pirate Princess Merchandise Sails in at the Magic Kingdom

Pirate Princess Merchandise Sails in at the Magic KingdomPrincesses have been a part of the “Disney” identity since the release of Snow White in 1937.  Generations of little girls have grown into women dreaming and singing along with a bevy of beautiful princesses.  Although Disney executives recently indicated that they are abandoning the long beloved tradition of princesses and fairy tales in favor of more “hot and hip” heroines, it seems that at least within the Walt Disney parks the Princess is still in vogue.

With the increased success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and the addition of Angelica’s spunky character, the princess merchandise at the Disney parks has branched out into a new Pirate Princess collection.  Although pirate princess merchandise appeared in the parks sporadically over the past 5 years, a collection of products was announced in April 2011.

These products are available at the Pirates Bazaar shop at the exit of Pirates of the Caribbean.  Some may also be found at the World of Disney store at Downtown Disney.  Interestingly, the pirate princess line seems targeted at the tween through adult range. Disney seems to believe that the combination of freedom, adventure, and feminine “princess” will appeal to an older audience and keep their connection with an older cadre of princesses.

The new line ranges from purely feminine to the slightly “gothy,” although almost all items include feminine touches. Prices are, however, a bit higher for the “feminine” pirate princess items than for the more standard pirates items, with shirts and hoodies starting around $32 and going up to $75. Take a look at the gallery below to see what new booty is awaiting you on your next trip to Walt Disney World!

Disney Chef’s Serves Up More Than $185K for Florida United Way

Twenty-four top chefs from Central Florida’s finest dining establishments recently joined forces at Walt Disney World Resort for the 19th Annual Chef’s Gala, the premier fundraiser for the Heart of Central Florida United Way (HFUW). Event organizers say the tasteful event raised more than $185,000 for Central Floridians in need.

More than 1,000 guests enjoyed the special evening at Epcot World Showplace on May 21, which featured a silent auction, live music, fine wines and extraordinary cuisine. Proceeds from Chef’s Gala benefit local nonprofit programs supported by United Way that provide food, shelter and many other critical social services.

“This year’s Chef’s Gala was a success by every measure,” said Robert H. (Bob) Brown, President/CEO of Heart of Florida United Way. “Thanks to the dedication of our co-chairs, Disney, the chefs and many other generous sponsors, 95 percent of all money raised will go to help our neighbors, friends, family and co-workers who have recently fallen on hard times.”

Walt Disney World Resort has served as host and sponsor of Chef’s Gala since its inception. Through Disney’s support of the event, more than $1 million has been raised for programs that serve the most vulnerable Central Floridians. Additionally, Walt Disney World Resort is the largest contributor to HFUW with cast members annually donating approximately $3.2 million to the organization.

Disney Consumer Products at Licensing International Expo 2011

Disney Consumer Products at Licensing International Expo 2011

This year at the 2011 Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas (June 14 — 16, Booth 4432), Disney Consumer Products (DCP) will focus on licensing initiatives driving growth for classic evergreen franchises, event films and emerging opportunities with Disney Channel and Disney Junior networks into 2012 and beyond. As the world’s largest licensor, DCP continues to set the global standard in entertainment and character licensing by positioning itself as a true lifestyle consumer products brand while remaining committed to product innovation, creativity and delivering high-quality, high-value product at all retail tiers around the world.

On June 24, the highly anticipated sequel Disney·Pixar’s Cars 2 will hit theaters and bring back the wildly popular duo of Lightning McQueen and Mater plus a whole new group of fun and lovable characters and storylines. DCP has developed a program that will propel the Disney·Pixar Cars franchise into the largest licensed merchandise program of the year. In less than five years since the film’s release in 2006, the Cars franchise has generated global retail sales of more than $8 billion – making it among Disney’s top franchises and quickly establishing itself as a true classic. Beyond the all new merchandise assortment releasing with the film, DCP will continue to support the Cars franchise with exciting new content across media platforms, via all new theme park attractions and new product lines to carry it through 2013 and beyond.

In the girls’ category, Disney Princess and Disney Fairies continue to be leading favorites. Starting this summer, “The Story Begins With You” campaign will kick off a series of entertainment content and promotions that will place the Disney Princess franchise center-stage and will deliver continual reach and frequency. In the fall, Disney Fairies fans will enjoy an all-new TV special on Disney Channel with Disney Fairies and the Pixie Hollow Games as the franchise continues success at retail globally.

From Phineas and Ferb to Shake It Up, Disney Channel inspired properties will introduce new product line assortments at retail leading into 2012. Additionally with the January 2012 launch of Disney Junior, Disney’s first 24-hour cable channel focused on preschool programming, DCP is currently developing licensing programs to launch merchandise in conjunction with new series in fall 2012.

Winnie the Pooh is among DCP’s largest franchises with massive global appeal. In 2011, the franchise will be driven at retail through a companywide effort that will bring new focus and take Pooh back to its roots. With the release of the Winnie the Pooh film in July, an updated merchandise program and a successful digital book application, the Winnie the Pooh franchise is poised to offer incremental licensing opportunities through the DVD window and new programming on Disney Junior. Similarly, the Mickey Mouse franchise will thrive from added focus through Disney Junior programming which will multiply the reach and frequency of this beloved classic character and serve up new licensing opportunities for Mickey and friends.

The Enchanted Tiki Room Reopens August 2011

There are more lay offs coming to Disney this August. The “new management” has been let go and the future of the Adventureland landmark is in the wings and wit of the infamous José, Fritz, Michael and Pierre. You remember these four crooning parrot hosts who ushered in sophisticated Audio-Animatronics technology at California’s Disneyland in 1963 at The Enchanted Tiki Room.

Goodbye Iago and Zazu you will be missed. Well not really.

Disney to Publish ‘The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?’ by Mo Willems in April 2012

Disney to Publish 'The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?' by Mo Willems in April 2012

Disney Publishing Worldwide will publish a fifth picture book starring PIGEON, Mo Willems’ internationally best-selling and award-winning avian hero. The agreement for North American English rights was negotiated by Christian Trimmer, Editor, Disney-Hyperion, an imprint of Disney Publishing Worldwide, and Marcia Wernick of Wernick & Pratt Agency.

The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? is scheduled for publication in April 2012, with a printing of 250,000. Duckling asks for a cookie—and gets one! Pigeon, who has been unsuccessfully asking for things for years, is not pleased.

The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? is probably my most research-heavy book to date,” said Willems. “As the creator, I had to ask tough questions, like ‘What kind of cookie?’ ‘How would the cookie taste?’ and ‘How would another one of the cookies taste?’ This hard work was not done by an assistant; I have the belly to prove it.”

“We are thrilled to publish Pigeon’s newest adventure,” said Trimmer. “To work with someone of Mo Willems’ rare genius is nothing short of an honor for Disney Publishing.”

In April 2003, television writer and animator Mo Willems published his first children’s book, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!. What quietly originated as a doodle in a sketchbook for family and friends became a publishing phenomenon and an instant children’s classic. The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog! followed in April 2004; Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! in 2006; and The Pigeon Wants a Puppy! in 2008. Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! was awarded the prestigious Caldecott Honor by the American Library Association and was inducted into the Indies Choice Picture Book Hall of Fame. More than 4 million Pigeon books are in print in the US, with 13 foreign language editions around the world.

Mo Willems has been awarded the Caldecott Honor on two other occasions: for Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale and Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity. In addition to picture books, he wrote the script and lyrics for Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical, commissioned by the Kennedy Center for its 2010 season. The production is currently touring the nation. Mo also created the Elephant and Piggie books, a series of easy readers, which were awarded with two Theodor Geisel Medals and a Geisel Honor. He began his career on Sesame Street, where he garnered six Emmy Awards. Mo lives with his family in Massachusetts.

Chip’s Epcot Touring Plan

Chip’s Epcot Touring Plan

I get a lot of questions and emails on Chip and Company asking me the best ways to tour the parks. I wanted to share with you my Magic Kingdom Touring Plan to help make your Disney World Vacation more enjoyable. I posted this last week on Couponing to Disney and thought it would be great to share it here too! If you missed my last Touring Plan click here to read about Touring the Magic Kingdom.

Sleep In

I stated off the last article about the Magic Kingdom by saying “Get there early.” Epcot unfortunately is not a park you can get there early, unless they have Extra AM Magic Hours or you have a ADR for Breakfast at Akershus. Most days Epcot is going to open at 9am and World Showcase around 11am. Our last trip we made breakfast reservations at Akershus Princess Storybook Dining around 8am, which I think is the perfect time to eat and hit the rides just when the park opens.(We eat fast)

Start off slow

While most people want to run and jump on Test Track when the park opens again we avoid the biggest attraction an opt for something else entirely. My family and I are big fans of the ocean and Nemo so we start off at The Living Seas with Nemo & Friends. Its a very relaxing ride and helps digest your breakfast nicely. We love getting our pictures taken with Bruce and checking out all the sea life. If you have little ones with you be sure to stop by and do Turtle Talk with Crush.

Quick Tip – Have your child sit on the very front row to interact with Crush, also something identifiable like a hat seems to get Crush’s attention. Teach your kids the word “Dude” before you go and have them use it for an additional laugh.

Off to The Land

Next door to the seas is “The Land” and our next stop “Soarin.” I suggest riding Soarin twice in a row cause later in the day you will see some of the longest lines for this ride. Avoid Living with the Land for now and when your done head up to Imagination.

Quick Tip – Use Fastpass for Soarin as your first of the day. Return time should be around lunch time.

Journey to Imagination

I am one of the few fans of the Journey to Imagination ride so its a must for us. Some people dislike that ride and avoid it at all cost. That I leave up to you. Again avoid Captain Eo (Honey I shrunk the Audience) for now. Also I would wait on the games outside of Imagination at this time. You can come back later in the day for a quick cool off.

Extreme Rides

At this point most of the Rope Drop people will have been on Test Track once maybe twice so now is your chance to get in there. Your food should be well digested and ready for some excitement. Hit Test Track up first and then if your ok with spinning rides visit Mission Space next. If your still full from breakfast head down to Universe of Energy and check out your first show. Be prepared its a LONG show.

Quick Tip – There are restrooms on your way to Test Track if you look on your park map for the exact location.

World Showcase Opens

If you timed it right World Showcase is now open, and it should be warming up in Epcot. Now is a good time for a pitstop before heading out to World Showcase. Club Cool is a great place to sample free Pop from around the world. Check out my article Epcot’s Club Cool is to HOT to pass up here.

If your a little early still or skipped a few rides head to Spaceship Earth or get some Autographs/Pictures at the Disney Character Meet & Greet. Tooling around in Innoventions is fun but we usually do that later in the day.

Once World Showcase opens head directly to Norway first. The Maelstrom is another ride that is going to have some seriously long lines. We skip the Norway show after the ride like most people do. When are they going to upgrade that thing? Seriously..

Around the World

After Norway we double back and visit one of my favorite places in Epcot..Mexico. Grand Fiesta Tour is a great boat ride and hardly ever busy. If your hungry stop off at San Angel Inn for lunch or if you have little ones stop by the Kidcot Station and start your fun journey around the world.

Quick Tip – Kidcot is free and is a lot of fun for little ones. Our daughters mask is still up on her wall minus the paint stick of course 🙂 There is a Kidcot station in every pavilion.

Take off Eh

We like to double back to Canada and go counter clockwise around the World Showcase. You can leave Mexico and go clockwise if you want. The choice is yours. I feel that most people go Clockwise for some reason and I am a rebel when I go backwards.

Take your time and enjoy the stroll

The World Showcase is a place you want to relax and enjoy. There is no need to rush, just take your time and explore everything you can. The food in each of the pavilions are some of the best at Walt Disney World. It usually takes us the better part of the day to walk all the way around Epcot. We make sure to stop at all the shows, attractions, and little shops that are available. For more on the Food around the World Showcase checkout our Guide to Walt Disney World Section here.

Quick Tip – Another great stop for little ones is in Japan. Our little one loved Miyuki the Japanese Candy Artist. Be sure to stand near her so she can ask your favorite animal. Check out this article for more.

Take a boat ride

As your feet get sore from walking around Epcot we find a riding the boat from Epcot to Hollywood Studios and back again is great for relaxing or letting little ones nap. I myself have fallen asleep a few times on board for a few minutes. We are staying at the Boardwalk Villas on our next trip so this might be a good time to head back to the room for a quick nap. Here are some tips on re-energizing.

Quick Tip – If you are a late eater you will want to skip the boat ride and move onto Fast Pass Time area.

Refreshed and ready to go

After the boat ride and a recharging of our batteries we are ready to go again. At this point it is getting close to dinner. We like to have an early dinner to avoid the crowds. There are some Good Eats in Epcot so depending on what kinda of food your in the mood for its just a short walk away.

If you are a drinker I suggest trying out our Drink Around the World Showcase or DAWS. It is a lot of fun and something you will want to try once in your lifetime!

Fast Pass Time

Depending on what your feel like riding this is where some strategy comes into play. This late in the day there is going to be lines for everything. Pick a ride that has a long line and go get a fast pass for it. Now with Fast Pass in hand go back to The Land and take in the Living with the Land, Captain EO, and any other shows you might have missed. You can head over to Innoventions and play with all the cool exhibits they have there. Basically you are killing time till your fast pass is ready.

Do some shopping or Pin Trading near the rotary in the center of the plaza. Its a great inexpensive hobby and perfect souvenirs to take home with you. For on Pin Trading check this article out.

Illuminations

Around this time it should be getting dark and the last thing you will want to do is watch Illuminations. Seating is up to you as there really is no bad seat. Check out this article for Best Fireworks locations.

Quick Tip – Depending on which way the wind is blowing be sure to sit up wind so the smoke doesn’t blow on you from the fireworks.

Time to head home

Wow that was a busy day now go back to your room and relax. Your earned it!

Well that is our attack plan for Epcot. How do you tour Epcot? Have any tips or tricks to share? Let us know in the comment section below.
