Top 5 Snacks for Small Children at Walt Disney World

Top 5 Snacks for Small Children at Walt Disney World

Everybody loves snacks at Walt Disney World, but I don’t think anyone can top the love of snacks like little kids can!  There is something special about a salty, sticky, sweet, gooey treat just for them!  My daughters eyes light up every time we pass by a popcorn stand at Walt Disney World, like we don’t have popcorn at home!  There are so many snacks at Walt Disney World, you really could eat a full meal and never sit down at a restaurant!  Here are my (and my daughters) Top 5 Snacks for Small Children at Walt Disney World:

  • Popcorn – As soon as you enter Magic Kingdom the aroma of popcorn hits you like a ton of bricks! My daughters absolute favorite snack anywhere is popcorn so Walt Disney World is no different!  But popcorn from Magic Kingdom is special, it tastes better and can come in some really cute souvenir containers!  I like getting her popcorn as a treat early in the day because she can munch on it for quite some time and it does not make a mess!  There is nothing worse than having a cute outfit for pictures and having the first snack of the day stain it!
  • Goofy’s Glaciers (frozen cokes) – At Goofy’s Candy Co. in the Marketplace they sell a fun drink called Goofy’s Glaciers.  It is essentially frozen coke, but comes in a variety of flavors.  You can get them in a souvenir cup and get refills throughout your trip for a cheaper price!  We visit Downtown Disney quite a bit on our vacations so it is nice to get a discounted treat each time!  They are great on a hot summer day for little ones sitting in the stroller! The souvenir cup has a very secure lid and bendy straw and we have never had a problem with spilling!
  • Mickey’s Premium Ice Cream Bar – This treat is a staple on any Walt Disney World vacation!  This is probably the most iconic Walt Disney World treat!  I suggest enjoying one with your family for breakfast, what a fun memory!  For my daughters birthday a few years ago we started the day with Mickey ice creams all around and had the best time!  Since then it has become a breakfast staple one day each trip!
  • Chocolate Covered Marshmallows – These can also be found at Goofy’s Candy Co.  The great thing about these little treats are that they come on a Mickey Silly Straw.  So once you eat the tasty treat you also have a fun take home too!
  • Cupcakes – I don’t think I have ever seen my child’s face light up as much as when she is presented with a Walt Disney World cupcake.  And good reason! They are beautiful creations hiding a wonderful cake inside! Not to mention they are overwhelmingly huge, especially for a little girl.   And who doesn’t love Mickey sprinkles?! Starring Rolls has the best cupcakes according to Chip so make sure to stop by and check them out!

These are just some of the wonderful snacks to be found at Walt Disney World, but happen to be my little girls favorites!  Do your kids have favorite treats at Walt Disney World?

Houston joins Toronto FC, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, the Montreal Impact, FC Dallas and Sweden’s B.K. Hacken in the eight-team field that also includes Orlando City Soccer and Sporting KC. In all, the 2012 field boasts six MLS squads – twice as many as a year ago.

‘This is unquestionably the best Disney Pro Soccer Classic field we’ve had so far. This will be a rare opportunity for fans to see so many marquee pro soccer teams in one place and experience the game in an intimate, family-friendly atmosphere.’

Defending Disney Pro Soccer Classic Champion FC Dallas, led by star Brek Shea, is back at Disney after reaching the MLS playoffs this season. And Toronto FC will be playing for the third straight year at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, which is the team’s official pre-season home.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC, which joined MLS in 2009, and Sweden’s B.K. Hacken will be making their Disney Pro Soccer Classic debuts.

The Classic begins with a week of pool play Feb. 24-March 1, followed by the championship game March 3. The tournament will offer fans unique interaction with players, such as the Orlando City Soccer “Fan Fest” on Feb. 25 when fans can meet players and pose for photos with the team’s trophies.

Single session tickets for the Disney Pro Soccer Classic, which include entry into two games, go on sale for $15.50 Dec. 1 through Ticketmaster (800/745-3000 and ticketmaster.com) and at the sports complex box office. All-tournament passes are $69.

The 10 Commandments of Walt Disney World Trips

The 10 Commandments of Walt Disney World Trips

There are some things that you just should not… SHOULD NOT do when you’re at Walt Disney World. They are major time pitfalls!  Think of them as being the 10 Commandments of Walt Disney World trips! Commit them to memory, recite them daily if you have to.

Just follow them, or risk a disaster of a trip! You wont wander Egypt, but WDW will feel just as big!

1) KNOW THY MAP- Before you even leave you should study Disney World maps like you were about to pick a college! Knowing WHERE things are in relativity to one another is KEY to using time wisely.  “Map readers”  waste precious moments of Disney time. Study!!! Buzz Lightyear is no-where near Haunted Mansion. Know this, and know it well. (Ps. my 8 year old son can actually close his eyes and visually walk you around the parks, so I know you can learn it too!) You can get FREE customized maps at http://customizedmaps.disney.go.com/

2) WAKE THYSELF EARLY – Prime time is park openings peeps! Be there for park openings and truck it to the rides that get insanely long FIRST. (those are listed in another commandment). Take a nap (like the Disney Diva has told you half a million times) in the middle of the day then it will be significantly easier to drag yourself up and out of your resort in time for the opening ceremony. Getting their early and staying late is the BEST way to do Disney. Get out during the time when everybody and their mama’s there (ie. heat of the day).

3) BOOK THYSELF CHARACTER MEALS– Major time pitfall…. standing in character lines. This can be easily avoided by doing 2-3 meals. (two for us because our kids dont like Pooh characters). All you really need is Chef Mickeys, Akershus, & Crystal Palace. At Chef Mickey’s you will get the “Fab 5” Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Donald, & Goofy. At Akershus you get Belle, Ariel, Cinderella, Snow White, or Jasmine. Crystal Palace knocks out Pooh, Piglet, Tigger & Eeyore. Hello, thats almost your whole autograph book full already! Schedule these early in your trip so you can just walk by and wave without your kids going into utter melt-down at you not stopping to get MORE of the same. Either way, don’t stand in those crazy long lines unless its your child’s most favorite character in the world.

4) BOOK THY CHARACTER MEALS AT GOOD TIMES – (online and 6 months in advance)We always do Chef Mickey breakfast first full-day 1 (about 7:45 if the magic kingdom opens at 9). This makes it possible to be at Magic Kingdom for park open. Akershus FOR SURE as a breakfast (the rest of the food wont be touched by the majority of Americanized kids) again 7:45am if park opens at 9. Crystal Palace is yummy at lunch and good at breakfast too. Crystal Palace gets you in early if you go for breakfast and there for rope drop (Rope drop makes it possible for you to get in to the actual lands), but I’m telling you that their Ratatouille is sooooo delicious at lunch!

5) DON’T BOOK THY TRIP HOLIDAY WEEKENDS – Yes, you’re off work… but SO IS EVERYBODY ELSE. If you really want shorter lines, less congestion and more fun think about those “random” times to go. For example, SEPTEMBER rocks at Disney, January, February (but not on MLK, Presidents Day, etc) and the first two weeks of May is usually pretty good as well. The months that have “spring break” and “fall break” are also bound to be more crowded. You have to be 32 flavors of CRAZY to do the 4th of July weekend and the week between Christmas and New Years is also INSANE. I know, some of you are going to go anyway, but you need to step up your planning game if you do, because its going to be VERY CROWDED.

6) USE THY CELL PHONE APPS THAT TELL PARK TIMES- If you have web access on your phone it will be your saving grace!! I have a droid and paid the subscription to the touringplans.com “Lines” app because, in my personal opinion, it is the best. It has it where you can update line waits as you see them and see other peoples wait updates (and how long ago they posted the wait). There are other ones. Droid has a free one that’s done by Undercover tourist called Disney World Times Lite. There are many other ones too. Its worth it. USE IT!

7) KNOW THY “LONG LINED” RIDES- There are rides that get crazy lines… CRAZY long lines which (I cannot understand WHY sometimes to be honest), but  its vitally important that you know WHICH ones those are in each park. You plan to go to those first. What I have noticed is that 1 hour after park opens these lines are going to be LONG for these rides. So if you don’t get them done in that first hour start using fast passes and move on or save them for another morning.
Magic Kingdom – DUMBO (has no fast pass), Peter Pan, Splash Mt., Big Thunder Mt., Space Mt., Buzz Lightyear, Pirates can get long (USE LEFT LANE IT IS SHORTER), and Jungle Cruise (which I cannot understand why the heck it gets long).
Epcot – RUN to Soarin’, Test Track, Mission Space can get long in summer, Spaceship Earth goes through shifts of busy and empty only go when its empty.
Hollywood Studios – RUN in a semi-psychotic way to Toy Story Mania (get the stroller later, rental/parking only takes time), Rockin Rollercoaster, Tower of Terror, Star Tours.
Animal Kingdom – Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Dinosaur (comes and goes in length)

8) DO THY LITTLE RIDES WHILE WAITING FOR FAST PASSES – As I mentioned before you do not go wait in one long line while waiting for a fast pass to come up. You do the smaller rides around it while waiting for your fast passes. Usually fast passes “come due” 1-2 hours after you get the actual ticket. So lets do a little scenario here.
FAST PASS- Splash Mountain.
WHILE WAITING – ride Aladdin’s Magic Carpets, Tiki Room, Pirates (if lines not long), , Country Bear Jamboree, Haunted Mansion, Liberty Bell.
EAT – Pecos Bill if you knock out all those rides quickly.
*If it’s an insanely long fast pass time (example Soarin’ you pick up fast-pass at 10:30 and its not coming up till 2) then normally it will give you a TIME when you can get another fp. Send someone to go and get another fp for a “long wait line” as soon as you can. For more help understanding fast passes read THIS post.

9) MARK THY STROLLER- I don’t know about you, but I’m spoiled now. When I park my car and walk in to a store on my cell phone, paying little to NO attention to where the heck I parked and not realizing it until I come back out, I hit the little button on my car that flashes the lights and makes a noise (over and over and over again). Unfortunately your stroller will not come with such a button. And they all look 100% identical. Let me highly recommend you go and buy some brightly colored ribbons. Think florescent orange or hot pink or lime green and wrap it around your stroller handle each day. People waste A LOT of time hunting for their strollers and some cast members seem to get their jollies by continuously re-arranging “stroller parking lots” so don’t expect it to be the same place you put it originally. Mark your stroller (and a balloon is not a good idea b/c there’s a billion of other people with them).

10) KNOW THY PARKING SPACE – At the end of the evening, lets face it, most people are cranky. Especially the people who did not choose to stay “on property”. You’ve not seen people CRAZY though until they cannot find their car. Super easy solution to this… whenever you park, as you are leaving to go to the tram take a picture with either your camera or your cell phone of the parking lot name and number. DO NOT FORGET TO DO THIS. It will save you a lot of drama and meltdowns later on. If you rent a car tie one of those brightly colored ribbons around your antenna (works the same as with your stroller). You might recognize your own car but not a rental car and pay for the GPS, it will save you major drama! (great present for those of you driving to disney this year).

Touring the Disney Vacation Club

Touring the Disney Vacation Club

On June 16,2010, Cindy, Sophie, my niece Stephanie, and myself checked into our hotel at Port Orleans French Quarter.  This was Stephanie’s first big trip to Walt Disney World, so we were extremely excited to share everything with her.  On the day of our arrival, I started up a conversation with the person in POFQ working for DVC.  She asked us what our plans were, and then told us that if we went for a tour of the facility, they would give us free fast passes for the four of us.  If I remember correctly, these were instant fast passes, and each card had something like three fast passes per day per person.  So we had twelve instant fast passes per person with those cards!

Since the only thing we really had to be at the park for was a dinner engagement at The Crystal Palace, we decided to take the tour.  What would it hurt to see what the best kept secret was all about?  The folks at Disney Vacation Development (DVD) certainly have all their ducks in a row!  The DVC Sales Center is located at the Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, and they bring a van over to take you and your family — and just you and your family — to the sales center to begin the tour.

Touring the Disney Vacation Club
One of the wall murals in the welcome center

Once you get there, you are put into the big welcome center where you can get a light refreshment.  Also at this time, you are invited to let your children play in the Kids Center, where they can play all sorts of games under the watchful eye of staff.  Sophie did that and had a great time!  In the meantime, our sales person Johanna Padilla introduced herself, and started talking about the concept of the Disney Vacation Club.  While she was talking, we were looking at a lot of the things that they have on display at the center — such as the locations around the world where DVC is in place.  We also got a small tour of the Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa while we were walking to the models.  But in reality, the exciting part of the tour for me was when we looked at the models.  To me, that was so cool!  Here is a picture I took during the tour.

Touring the Disney Vacation Club
The tilework at the Animal Kingdom Master Bathroom

After the tour, which showed us both the models for Animal Kingdom and Bay Lake Tower, plus a small scale model of the treehouse villas, we sat down with Johanna to talk about the plan itself.  Really, when we found out how  much of our vacation club ownership we could have paid had we paid on that instead of the vacations we took, it about made my wife and I sick to our stomachs!  In the end, the cost of the plan was such that it really made sense to us to take the plunge!

After all of the paperwork was completed — and I’ll be honest, it took probably about 2 1/2 hours instead of the hour that we had been told — we were finally able to finish up and visit the ice cream parlor!  Sophie was in cloud nine as she was able to make her own sundae, and then the van took us to the Magic Kingdom so we could make our dinner reservation!

When we agreed to take the tour, we had no idea that we were going to actually purchase a DVC ownership.  It certainly is a family decision to make together, and each families decision may very well be different, but even if you don’t purchase, don’t be afraid to take the tour!  You’ll get something for your time, and you’ll see a side of Disney that not many other people see!  If you are interested in buying, please mention me as a referral!  Just check out this image for more details!

Teenage girls and their moms flock to her mall when the gorgeous winner of the contest becomes a local hero, sending sales through the roof. She counted on this new Santa to win her a promotion – not win her heart, complicate her life and question everything she ever wanted. In addition, ABC Family is proud to bring the wooftastic holiday movie “The Search for Santa Paws” to television for the first time on Monday, November 21 (9:00 – 11:00 PM ET/PT).

Premiering Sunday, December 11 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), “12 Dates of Christmas” follows a young woman who re-lives the same first date on Christmas Eve over and over again until she learns to open up her world to new things and stop living in the past.

25 Days of Christmas” also brings the basic cable premiere of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” (Sunday, December 4, 8:30 PM – 12:00 AM ET/PT), which headlines the network’s annual “Harry Potter” movie marathon running on Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4. The marathon also includes the first five installments of the “Harry Potter” film franchise.

Viewers can also ring in the holidays with the television premiere of the Pink Panther animated short “A Very Pink Christmas,” on Wednesday, December 7 (6:00 – 6:30 PM ET/PT) and the network premiere broadcasts of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” on Wednesday, December 7 (9:00 – 11:00 PM ET/PT), and Disney∙Pixar’s “Up” on Friday, December 16 (9:00 – 11:00 PM ET/PT).

Triple platinum artists, The Band Perry, who are currently nominated for three AMA and a total of five CMA Awards, have written and recorded an original holiday song for “25 Days of Christmas” and will shoot a music video for the song, which will be part of the network’s on-air and online campaign. Viewers will get an exclusive 60-second sneak peek of the music video during the November 20 (8:00 – 10:00 PM ET/PT) airing of “Holiday in Handcuffs,” and the entire video will be available immediately afterward online at ABCFamily.com/25Days.

Capturing Disney in Pictures: Ceremonial House Waterfall at The Polynesian Resort

Capturing Disney in Pictures: Ceremonial House Waterfall at The Polynesian Resort

Every photo has a story.

Back on October 1, 1971, when Walt Disney World first opened, there were only two operational resorts: The Contemporary and The Polynesian.  Few people realize that while these deluxe hotels appear as fairly opposite buildings at first glance, they are almost identical in terms of structure.  These two iconic vacation havens were designed by the architectural firm Welton Becket & Associates.  Both manufactured for Disney by the U.S. Steel Corporation, they were engineered using a modular construction system that was highly innovative in the early ’70’s.

On one of the Disney vacation days when you find yourself without park tickets, hop a monorail and take a tour of the South Pacific themed Polynesian Resort.

Picture this…8,500 plants are used at the Polynesian each year.  They do more interior planting than any other Disney resort.  All these plants are amassed from over 3,000 different species, showcasing a plant species from every continent in the world except Antarctica.

If you haven’t exhausted your feet walking down Main Street, you can view the  magnificent landscaping, both interior and exterior, by walking to the Polynesian Resort via a sidewalk from the Ticket and Transportation Center.  There is also a 1.5 mile walking trail that starts at the Polynesian and continues on to the Shades of Green Resort.  You’ll feel like you’ve taken a magical journey onto the South Pacific islands, far from roller coaster lines and noisy crowds.  What’s more, this walking  journey is absolutely free!

Before you begin your walking tour, spend some time inside the Great Ceremonial House, because the centerpiece waterfall is an amazing artwork of 75 different plant varities cascading off volcanic stone.

Thanks for stopping by for a photographical Disney ride!
