Conquering the New Fast Pass Enforcement System

Note how it now says "will not accommodate late arrivals"

“will not accommodate late arrivals” now on ALL fast passes handed out at Disney World

My family and I just came back from a week in Disney World with the Spring Break crowds. The parks were crowded and we had to test out some new touring strategies due to them enforcing the fast pass returns.

Here are some tips for you:

-It is more important than ever to get to the park at rope drop with the new enforcements in place. We were able to ride a lot of the popular rides without having to waste a fast pass opportunity by getting there early.

-The fast passes for the REALLY popular rides had very late return times. For example by 10:30 a.m. the return time for Toy Story Mania was around dinner time which would cause a problem for most people because they would miss their dining reservations AND it prevents you from getting another fast pass until that time.

-Be very certain to look at the RETURN time for the fast passes before you go sticking your pass into the fast pass slot. There were many times when we would realize that attractions like Buzz Light Year and Test Track had quicker return times than Soarin’ or Toy Story Mania so we tried to hit those popular ones early on in the day without fast passing them and fast pass the attractions like Buzz Light Year and Tower of Terror that had return times about an hour later, allowing us to have more fast pass opportunities throughout the day.

Cast Members Mean Business:

Don’t approach your vacation thinking you will find a CM who will let you slide, they are being very clear when you are getting the fast passes that there are no exceptions. When we were getting fast passes for Rockin’ Roller Coaster the CM was loudly announcing to everyone “if you do not come back within the time stated on your Fast Pass it is as if you do not have a fast pass at all for this ride”. I did test the return time window and as allowed to ride 10 minutes after a printed fast pass time but I wouldn’t push it beyond that.

Changing How You Tour The Park:

I know I will be revamping the touring plans that I do for my clients based on this experience and the new fast pass limitations. It did not hinder our vacation at all and we still had a Magical time in Disney, but it changes the way you do things for sure. I did notice that the fast pass lines were much shorter now that they were enforcing return times which was great.

How will this change your park touring style? What do you think of the changes?

Celebrities, Details and Tips Announced for Star Wars Weekends 2012

“Actor

Following the post earlier in the week about the return of James Arnold Taylor (voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi – Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Ashley Eckstein (voice of Ahsoka Tano – Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Celebrity Hosts for Star Wars Weekends, we received a new transmission from an R2 unit that reveals more Star Wars celebrities scheduled to appear this year at Disney’s Hollywood Studios park. The annual event takes place each Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 18-June 10, 2012.

With Donald Duck doing his best Darth Maul impression in the 2012 event logo, seen here, Star Wars Weekends 2012 will welcome several celebrities from Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace for the Force-filled fun. In fact, Donald will have the chance to meet Ray Park, the action star who portrayed Darth Maul, during an extended engagement. Ray (pictured below) is scheduled to appear in both Weekends I and II.

Another 2012 highlight: keep a sharp eye during Weekend IV when bounty hunters — a favorite among many fans — take center stage in their very own weekend (doesn’t that seem appropriate, considering Star Wars bounty hunters generally work on their own anyway?). As an added surprise, Weekend IV will be a “Bonus Boba” weekend! Both actors who portrayed laconic enforcer Boba Fett in the saga — Jeremy Bulloch and Daniel Logan — will appear during the event’s closing weekend.

Each weekend will also feature a visiting celebrity voice actor from the popular animated TV series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Here’s the scheduled celebrity lineup for Star Wars Weekends 2012 (subject to change):

Weekend I (May 18 – 20)

  • Ray Park – (Darth Maul – Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace)
  • Jerome Blake (Rune Haako/Mas Amedda – Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace)
  • Dee Bradley Baker (voice of Clone Captain Rex and Clone Commander Cody – Star Wars: The Clone Wars)

Weekend II (May 25- 27)

  • Andy Secombe (Watto – Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace)
  • Ray Park (Darth Maul – Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace)
  • Tom Kane (voice of Yoda – Star Wars: The Clone Wars)

Weekend III (June 1 -3)

  • Jake Lloyd (Anakin Skywalker – Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace)
  • Silas Carson (Nute Gunray/Ki-Adi-Mundi – Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace)
  • (Star Wars: The Clone Wars voice talent – currently TBD)

Weekend IV (June 8- 10)

  • Michonne Bourriague (Aurra Sing – Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace)
  • Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett – Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi)
  • Daniel Logan (Boba Fett – Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones)
  • Nika Futterman (voice of Asajj Ventress – Star Wars: The Clone Wars)

While most daily events are still being scheduled, we have received a few additional news of note and tips for Star Wars Weekends 2012 (all activities & entertainment subject to change):

  • “Hyperspace Hoopla”: This high-energy, one-of-a-kind show is a chance to see some of the famed Star Wars characters performing like never before. It will take place on a stage in front of the Sorcerer Mickey hat on Hollywood Blvd., and is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. each event evening.
  • Autograph Opportunities: As always, there is no additional charge for the celebrity autograph sessions at Star Wars Weekends. The autograph lines will once again be handled via a FASTPASS-type system. The meet-and-greet session/autograph opportunities are extremely limited, so guests need to arrive early to receive a FASTPASS. Please refer to this link, which will take you to the official Star Wars Weekends event page on DisneyWorld.com. There, you’ll find more detailed information under “Celebrity Autographs.”
  • Star-Studded Event: Keep in mind, autograph opportunities are not the only place to see the celebrities. Star Wars stars take part in fun throughout the day in Star Wars-themed talk shows, behind-the-scenes presentations, the gala “Legends of the Force” parade and more.

That’s the latest for now. Keep checking back as we confirm more scheduled activities for Star Wars Weekends 2012. Do you have any special memories of past Star Wars Weekends or of any of the celebrities that will attend this year? If so, please share in the comments.

First Look at New Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar in Italy at Epcot

“The

With an opening set for early May, here’s a sneak peek at Tutto Gusto, the new wine bar adjacent to Tutto Italia Ristorante in the Italy Pavilion at Epcot that’s sure to be a new World Showcase hot spot.

Gusto takes over the former lobby space of Tutto Italia and extends back toward Via Napoli. The 96-seat Tutto Gusto will be a more intimate space, with décor inspired by an Italian wine cellar with stone walls and floors, and vaulted ceilings and a fireplace in the dining room. Hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The chefs have created a small-plate menu that takes guests on a fabulous culinary tour of Italy. There are six sections and all sorts of wonderful tastes: Affettati (cured, sliced meats); Formaggi (Italian cheeses); Panini (sandwiches); Piccoli Piatti (small plates); Cavatappi (a type of pasta), and Dolci (sweets).

With more than two dozen small plates with everything from a taste of prosciutto de Parma to creamy burrata cheese and mussels with white wine, we can’t wait for a taste. The pasta dishes all are made with cavatappi, a corkscrew-shaped pasta, and include three versions: tomato and bufala mozzarella; shrimp, chilis, garlic and tomato; and arugula, potato, pancetta, tomatoes and asiago cheese. Classic Italian!

More than 200 Italian wines, including sparkling, reds and whites, and beers such as La Rossa, Moretti and Menabrea will be offered. Grappas – a distilled drink made from what remains of grapes after they have been pressed for winemaking – will be another specialty, or just sip an espresso or cappuccino.

Tutto Gusto is part of the Disney Dining Plan.

Accessible Ride Vehicles at the Magic Kingdom

Accessible Ride Vehicles at the Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney World has made it possible for people with all kinds of abilities to visit and experience the magic. One of the things that makes my visits easier is that Disney has implemented ways for you to stay in your wheelchair to experience certain attractions if you are unable to transfer.

I have found the accessible ride vehicles very easy to use with minimal assistance. Below is a rundown of these attractions at the Magic Kingdom.

The Walt Disney World Railroad is accessible through either the Main Street or Frontierland stations. Just let the cast members know you need to use the ramp to board the train and they will lead you to the wheelchair seating. I love riding the train because you get to sit up front near the conductor.

The Magic Carpets of Aladdin has an accessible vehicle, just enter through the standard queue and let the cast members know you would like to stay in your wheelchair.

The Jungle Cruise has a boat with a ramp and a lift. Loading is really easy and you will have a great view since the lift keeps you higher than the other guests that are seated around you.

To ride the Liberty Square Riverboat enter through the exit. Once you are at the boat the cast members will place a ramp down for you to ride. We rode up at the front of the boat. Just be aware that its not flat so make sure your brakes are working properly.

It’s a small world has a separate wheelchair entrance and a boat that is just for wheelchairs. They place rubber bumpers in front of and behind your tires so you stay secure. Sometimes there is a wait for the wheelchair boat to cycle through but we are usually rewarded with a solo cruise through the attraction.

The Many Adventures of Winne the Pooh accessible vehicle lets you roll right in. You can also choose whether or not to bounce with Tigger, which moves the vehicle slightly but there are no major bumps or jerks.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has a special ride vehicle with a ramp that you and one guest in your party can use. If the cast members are fast enough getting the ramp down the ride doesn’t even stop. And if you are lucky and there are no other wheelchairs waiting, you may even get to ride again.

Stitch’s Great Escape has special wheelchair seating in the back and you can still experience everything. Whether or not that is a good thing is up for debate but the cast members will help you lower the shoulder harness so you can hear and smell it all.

Shows like The Country Bear Jamboree, Monster’s Inc Laugh Floor, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, Mickey’s Philharmagic, The Hall of Presidents, and the Enchanted Tiki Room have special wheelchair seating. Just alert a cast member when you arrive. There is also special wheelchair seating at the Magic Kingdom parades. You can view my tips for parade viewing in a wheelchair here.

For more information for you can visit the Walt Disney World site for Guests with Mobility Disabilities and view the Guide for Guests with Disabilities for the Magic Kingdom online. You can also e-mail me at [email protected]

Disney Epic Mickey Paints Its Way To The Nintendo 3DS with Epic Mickey Power Of Illusion

Disney Epic Mickey Paints Its Way To The Nintendo 3DS with Epic Mickey Power Of Illusion

Disney Interactive Media Group today announced the development of “Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion,” the first Nintendo 3DS™ title in the “Disney Epic Mickey” franchise. The title features an interactive combination of painting, dual screen integration and 3D transformation capabilities designed to give players the unique ability to create objects and even characters they can place in the world of Wasteland.

In “Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion,” Reality is What You Paint of It.  The game offers a special drawing and painting function that allows players to create rough versions of objects that magically transform into classic Disney-style 2D illustrations.  Utilizing the game’s unparalleled dual screen integration, players then move their creations to the top screen where they are further transformed into full-color, fully-rendered 3D visuals.

Paying tribute to the classic Sega Genesis title “Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse,” “Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion” focuses on the fabled Castle of Illusion, which has fallen into Wasteland, an alternate world filled with 80 years of forgotten Disney characters and theme park attractions – and now forgotten video games.  The evil witch Mizrabel, villainess from the classic “Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse,” finds herself an unwilling inhabitant of Wasteland, and unleashes a plot to escape using the Castle of Illusion to imprison and drain the cartoon essence from currently famous Toons.  Players will take on the role of Mickey Mouse as he utilizes his magical brush to wield paint and thinner to confront Mizrabel and save the Toons.

“The original ‘Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse’ changed the face of video gaming by allowing players to play as Mickey Mouse in a side-scrolling adventure full of dynamic environments,” said Warren Spector, vice president and creative director, Junction Point. “We’re honored to be able to pay tribute to this classic video game by creating a title that  truly takes advantage of the unique capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS, putting the magic of Disney and the historic Castle of Illusion in the palm of your hands.”

“Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion” is being created by critically acclaimed DS developer DreamRift, in collaboration with Disney Interactive’s Junction Point.
