Five Things EVERY Adult has the Right to do at Disney World!

Five Things EVERY Adult has the Right to do at Disney World!

There is just something about Disney World!  Business people become bear hugging, camera toting, firework loving, Disney guests.  As a smile forces its way onto the straight face of a serious adult, the magic begins!  Today I am giving you permission to embrace Disney World for what it is!  In fact in this post, I’m reading you your “Disney as an adult” rights.  Take a moment to soak in these rights and apply them to your Disney trip.

Right #1:  You have the right to dance in the street!

What better place is there to dance in the street than Disney World? With interactive street shows like Move it!  Shake it!  Celebrate it! and Disney Channel Rocks!, you are guaranteed to find a way to let loose and dance in the streets.

Quick tip – Hit up club 626 at the Magic Kingdom.  This is a character filled spot made just for dancing like nobody is watching.  Nestled in Tomorrowland between Space Mountain and The Carousel of Progress, this spot often features dancing characters and a DJ to help get the party started!  This party doesn’t happen every day so check your Times  Guide (or app if you are tech savy).

Right #2: You have the right to take pictures with characters!

This might seem like common sense. At any rate, I am stating this as a right to every adult.  You absolutely do have the right to take as many photos as you want.  It is totally cool for you to geek out over characters.  Take it from me, an adult who talks with college aged girls dressed as princesses, as if they are real, true, royalty.  No lie!  Next time you get the urge, get out your camera and ham it up with your favorite character!

Quick tip – There are a lot of spots where you can ensure tons of characters.  My favorite is the Character Spot in Epcot.  Mickey and his gang hang out in this photo opp dream come true!  You can bring your own camera or have a Disney photographer snap shots of you to put on your Photo Pass card.  Hey, and even on a crowded day this wait isn’t too bad and on the plus side…the wait is air conditioned.

Right #3:  You have the right to eat ice cream every day!

In Disney, there are no such things as calories.  Okay, that was a small lie.  But, I say when you are on vacation at Disney World, you are required to eat as much ice cream as possible.  My poison?  Totally a Mickey’s Premium Ice Cream Bar.  But, I would like to add to this right that any and all calories are okay at Disney World.  Now, I know this is completely falsified information, but in my defense, I like to think that all that walking creates a balance (girl math).  So, while you are there, get an ice cream or sweet treat of your choice EVERY DAY!!!

Quick tip – Ice cream is availible throughout every park at carts.  There are many options for “quick” ice cream.  As I said earlier, I am a fan of the Mickey’s Premium Bar.  The best part is, you can pay with cash or credit and if you are on the dining plan, this counts as a snack!

Right #4:  You have the right to wear funny things!

At Disney World, it is perfectly acceptable to wear funny things.  Hats with ears, shirts with characters, I even saw these really weird looking Grumpy (as in the dwarf) hat/beard combos on my last trip in March.  I say go for the goofy stuff.  Just remember, the likelyhood of you seeing someone in the parks in your daily life is slim.  I say go for the pirate themed Mickey Ears sir, you have earned them!

Quick tip – Hat’s can be purchased in various gift shops throughout the parks.  My favorite (in park) location to buy and personalize those famous ears is found in the Magic Kingdom.  The Chapeau is located on Main Street USA and boasts hats to meet your heart’s desire!  Plus, you can pick your thread and font to personalize your hat with your name!

Right #5:  You have the right to ride what you want!

I am a firm believer that you can ride whatever you want to ride when you are in Disney World.  From the scariest of rides like Expedition Everest to rides made for tots like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, there is no ride that is off limits.  With the freedom of height requirements behind us,  adulthood sometimes makes people think they shouldn’t ride this or sit through that.  There are no age limit requirments.  You can fly the Magic Carpets of Aladdin, you can spin to your little heart’s content on the tea cups, and yes, you may sit through as many shows of Disney Jr. Live on Stage as you can stomach (good luck).  The World is yours, savor it.

Quick tip – some of my favorite rides and attractions are the ones I remember from my childhood.  I can’t pass up goofy childhood favorites like The Country Bears Jamboree.  If you you have been to Disney World in the past, ride those favorites with no shame.  If this is your first trip, remember, everyone is a kid at Disney World and ride on!!!

Do you have another right that you’d like to add to the list?  Write it below in the comments section.  Thanks for reading!

Top 5 Animal Kingdom Traditions

Top 5 Animal Kingdom Traditions

If you have been bitten by the Disney bug, then chances are you try to visit Walt Disney World as often as you can. If so, then you probably have some traditions that you must embrace each time you visit to make your trip complete. I have some Animal Kingdom traditions that I would like to share with you, and they just might be some of your traditions too!

5. Walk Through Asia-One of my favorite places at Animal Kingdom is Asia. For me, Disney is at its best in this part of the park in regards to detail, story, and experience! As I make my way towards Expedition Everest, it’s a tradition of mine to study the signs, the ruins and remains of the old village, as well as the construction projects going on and the references to the mythical yeti as I make my way towards Expedition Everest!

4. Tree of Life Picture-No matter how many times I’ve seen it, the Tree of Life never ceases to amaze. Once I walk out of the Oasis, I am awestruck every time; and it’s a tradition for me to snap a picture of the tree no matter how many times I’ve done it before!

3. Kilimanjaro Safaris-This attraction is one of Disney’s greatest attractions of all time and one of its most unique in that it’s actually alive! Not only do you get to see free roaming African wildlife, you also get to experience a taste of African and an African safari!  So for a complete Animal Kingdom experience, this attraction is one of my Animal Kingdom traditions!

2. Mickey Premium Bar-Disney regulars would agree that Animal Kingdom seems hotter than other parks; and since there is a lot to see and a lot of ground to cover, one of my traditions in order to keep cool is to snack on a Mickey Premium Bar!

1. Expedition Everest-One of my favorite WDW attractions, this Expedition Everst has two things that I really enjoy in a ride: a great story and great thrills! I even enjoy waiting in Expedition Everest‘s queue which seeminly transports me to a village in Nepal and is chock full of details! Naturally, it’s a tradition for me to throroughly study all I can in this attraction’s line and then enjoy a pulse-pounding ride forwards (and  backwards) down the mountain! It’s a must-do during my trips to Animal Kingdom.

Now it’s your turn! I want to hear your own Animal Kingdom traditions so be sure to leave a comment and share them with us!

Disney VoluntEARS Build Playground for Lakeland Area Kids

Disney VoluntEARS Build Playground for Lakeland Area Kids

The spirit of volunteerism filled the Boys & Girls Club of Lakeland on April 28, as Orlando and Tampa-based Disney VoluntEARS converged to build a playground at the facility with the help of the KaBOOM! organization and Girls, Inc.

Entertainment and diversions kept the energy high with Radio Disney playing music, and hosting interactive games, raffles and dances. Disney Cast Members from Animal Science and Environment participated on the Youth Activities Team which was comprised of volunteers age 17 years and younger. The Cast shared Earth Month initiatives and staffed an outdoor activities station on “Bugs You Can Find in Your Own Back Yard”.

The event was covered by Lakeland’s newspaper, The Ledger, and Gow Fields, Mayor, City of Lakeland, volunteered during the entire building process. Rex Perry, Executive Director of Boys & Girls Club of Lakeland and Kay Fields, President/CEO of Girls, Inc. were overcome with joy at the completion of the build. Perry made it a point to speak to all the Disney VoluntEARS on their buses as they departed to thank them for their exceptional efforts to making this come true for Lakeland. He shared with them his motto of the day “this is all for the kids.”

Visiting Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter Resort – Why It’s Worth The Trip

Visiting Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort - Why It's Worth The Trip
Port Orleans French Quarter is one of Disney’s Moderate Resorts, and it’s modeled after New Orlean’s historic French Quarter. It’s a great Resort to stay at, and it’s also a great Resort to visit, even if you aren’t staying there!

So why should you go out of your way to visit this quaint little resort?

Well, there are many reasons:

Visiting Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort - Why It's Worth The Trip

Atmosphere (and Romance!) – it is a quiet, laid back resort that really encompasses the New Orleans “big easy” style. When you walk in through the lobby, you enter a big open courtyard area where there are palm trees and cobblestone streets and smooth jazz music playing in the background (when we went, it was the holidays, so the jazz was Christmas themed!)

Visiting Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort - Why It's Worth The Trip

I recommend taking a leisurely, romantic walk around the resort and breathe in the smell of the magnolia blossoms and check out the landscaping – there are several beautiful courtyards with benches in them, where you can sit and relax (and it’s very peaceful!). There is a trail along the Sassagoula River that connects Port Orleans French Quarter to Port Orleans Riverside, and this scenic stroll really makes you feel like you’ve been transported to the Big Easy! This is an especially romantic thing to do at sunset, and if you decide to walk to Port Orleans Riverside, you can take an old fashioned horse and carriage ride through the beautiful woodlands of both Port Orleans Resorts (Here is some more information on the Carriage Rides)

Entertainment – The Resort offers live entertainment at it’s bar, Scat Cat’s Lounge every Wednesday through Sunday from 8:30pm-Midnight by Elliot Dyson, a New-Orleans style pianist who also plays the saxophone, sings, and has been known to play the guitar and steel drums on occasion too. And as if that weren’t enough, he is also hilarious (Here’s some more info on Elliot Dyson)

If you happen to miss Elliot, you can still stop in at Scat Cat’s for one of their specialty drinks, including the Southern Hurricane (Southern Comfort, orange juice, pineapple juice and grenadine), Sassagoula Swamp water (A blend of rum, gin, tequila and a secret touch!), or the Banana Cabana (Bacardi Spiced Rum and Creme de Banana liquor with coconut and pineapple juice served frozen). The Hurricane drink actually originated in New Orleans, which is why these are the house specialty here and are a definite must try!

If you have kids in your group, Port Orleans French Quarter has them covered too – they have a playground, as well as a video game arcade, and every night the Resort hosts an outdoor movie as well as a campfire (complete with s’mores!)

I also recommend that you stop in at Jackson Square Gifts and Desires for a little shopping and pick up a souvenir to commemorate your fun trip to Port Orleans French Quarter!

Visiting Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort - Why It's Worth The Trip

Specialty Food – Should you happen to get hungry after your walk, head on over to the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory for some New Orleans style cuisine – gumbo, po’boys, and beignets are all on the menu here, and the dining area is decorated with huge festive Mardi Gras decor that is sure to put you in a party mood!

So now that you’re ready to visit Port Orleans French Quarter, you might be wondering, “How can I get there?”. You can travel by bus from any of the 4 Theme Parks, and if you happen to be at Downtown Disney, you can take a boat to Port Orleans French Quarter, its a nice scenic ride over to the Resort!

Visiting Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort - Why It's Worth The Trip

Personally, I love Port Orleans French Quarter, I stayed there last year and can’t say enough good things about it (check out some of my pics here, and check out this post for more info on what makes it such a great place to stay!), and if you can’t stay here, then I highly recommend you stop by for a visit. So take some time and escape the busy Parks for a leisurely afternoon full of New Orleans charm at Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter Resort!

‘Her Universe’ Star Wars Spring/Summer Apparel Line to Debut at Disney’s Star Wars Weekends

'Her Universe' Star Wars Spring/Summer Apparel Line to Debut at Disney’s Star Wars Weekends

It’s a good time to be a fangirl of the Star Wars saga as Her Universe™, the female sci-fi genre line of fashionable apparel and accessories, revealed today its new Spring/Summer line to debut at Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida on May 18th (running each weekend till June 10th) and online at http://www.Heruniverse.com on May 21st.

'Her Universe' Star Wars Spring/Summer Apparel Line to Debut at Disney’s Star Wars Weekends

Created by actress Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the current seasonal offering from Her Universe Includes a racer back tank top and fashion tops featuring such beloved characters as Princess Leia, R2-D2 and Darth Vader as well as a unique Princess Leia zip-hoodie and a fun Ahsoka Tano youth tunic created to help young girls feel just like Anakin’s Padawan learner on The Clone Wars. To accentuate the new Star Wars apparel, Eckstein and Her Universe are offering two new charms – a Boba Fett design and a Japor Snippet replica, the good luck charm given as a gift to Padme from a young Anakin Skywalker. All of this Star Wars treasure can be carried in the new cotton canvas Star Wars tote bag featuring the Star Wars symbols. Several new apparel pieces are also being introduced for the younger “Jedi-in-training” including several Star Wars youth designs and, for the first time, a Jedi onesie for the tiniest followers of the Force featuring the adorable art of popular Star Wars illustrator Katie Cook.

'Her Universe' Star Wars Spring/Summer Apparel Line to Debut at Disney’s Star Wars Weekends

“I was very excited when Ashley approached me to do kids’ designs for Her Universe,” said Cook. “She’s doing a wonderful thing for the female fan community already… and she’s doing those of us with little girls an even bigger favor by giving the littlest fangirls nerdy gear of their own!”

'Her Universe' Star Wars Spring/Summer Apparel Line to Debut at Disney’s Star Wars Weekends

In addition to the new product line being available at Disney’s Star Wars Weekends, Eckstein will also, for the fourth year in a row, be co-hosting the Behind The Force live stage show and signing autographs each weekend of the event.

'Her Universe' Star Wars Spring/Summer Apparel Line to Debut at Disney’s Star Wars Weekends

“Disney’s Star Wars Weekends is one of my favorite events of the year,” said Ashley Eckstein. “I truly enjoy meeting Star Wars fans of all ages and that’s why I am so excited to be offering merchandise for women, girls and now babies! As the voice of Ahsoka Tano, I cannot wait to see baby girls in an Ahsoka ‘Jedi in Training’ onesie or little girls running around in Ahsoka’s new costume top!”

Her Universe was launched in 2009 by Eckstein, and her partner, The Araca Group, known as one of the most innovative theatrical production and merchandise companies in the world. Her Universe was created to directly address the expanding market of female fans by entering into its first agreement with Lucas Licensing to develop and produce a line of female-centered Star Wars apparel and accessories. The success of that line was followed up with a collection for the Syfy network including such shows as Battlestar Galactica. Visit http://www.Heruniverse.com to purchase the new Star Wars collection or visit a Hot Topic store near you to find select Her Universe items. You can also learn more about Her Universe by following Eckstein on Twitter at https://twitter.com/HerUniverse and visiting the Her Universe Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/HerUniverse.

Star Wars Droid Factory Now Open at Disney Hollywood Studios

Star Wars Droid Factory Now Open at Disney Hollywood Studios

The “Droid Factory” experience, a new attraction where you can build and name your own R-series astromech droid action figures, is now open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

“We began discussing the Droid Factory in 2009,” says product developer Cody Hampton. “We know that personalization is an important aspect of the popular build-your-own lightsaber experience. We felt the same thing could be done with action figures but on a much larger scale.”

Located at the park’s Tatooine Traders location, the Droid Factory has 71 different pieces to create the 3 3/4-inch scale astromech figures. To get started, guests choose a dome, a body and legs offered in a variety of colors and styles (availability of various parts and colors may change). There are optional third legs and novelty hats that can be added as well.

“We wanted lots of options for [the Droid Factory],” continues Cody. “There are literally thousands of combinations making each droid unique. Guests can also name their droids with sticker sheets provided at checkout.”

Three domes — R6, R8 and R9 — were created exclusively for this experience at Disney Parks. The multi-colored ear hats, which are inspired by Jedi Mickey’s astromech droid, R2-MK, will be joined by four additional hats later this summer including a Goofy hat, a pirate hat, a fedora (very Agent P) and a Yoda cap.

Droids will be sold either in single or dual packs (the latter has a value price). They can also be used with playsets like the Starspeeder 1000.

I’m looking forward to building a few astromech’s myself as I head down to DHS for this year’s Star Wars Weekends. Be sure to follow me on Twitter and listen to my reports for the Sorcerer Radio Network and the WDW After Dark vidcast LIVE this Friday May 18, 2012!

Disney & LeSportsac Launch It’s A Small World Collection

Disney & LeSportsac Launch It's A Small World Collection

LeSportsac and Disney Consumer Products announced today the launch of the Disney It’s a Small World by LeSportsac collection featuring handbags, totes and accessories that combine the bright aesthetic of LeSportsac with inspiration from the mid-century artwork of Disney artist Mary Blair who created the whimsical look of the beloved Disney theme park attraction “it’s a small world.”

Disney It’s a Small World by LeSportsac collection includes five seasonal deliveries, each inspired by a specific country. In addition to celebrating a country, each delivery will be anchored with a Signature Tote and a colorful print that pays tribute to the unique facades and architectural works of Disney’s “it’s a small world” Theme park attraction. The collection kicks off with a celebration of Tahiti that includes two graphic totes and a range of 12 styles in two vibrant prints.

“We are so inspired by Blair’s original art and the “it’s a small world” theme of global awareness,” said D’Arcy Jensen, Vice President, Global Creative Director, LeSportsac. “Each collectible design we are creating is a colorful narrative that is sure to delight fans of Disney, Mary Blair and LeSportsac alike.”

The “it’s a small world” attraction, which debuted at the New York World’s Fair in 1964, was created by Walt Disney both as a salute to UNICEF and his belief that everyone is united in their love of children and dreams of a better tomorrow. In keeping with the original philanthropic message of “it’s a small world,” Disney will make a donation to UNICEF in honor of “it’s a small world” and all product in the Disney It’s a Small World by LeSportsac collection will include a special hangtag sharing the history of the original attraction and the connection to UNICEF.

“Our collaboration with LeSportsac pays homage to the magical experience of “it’s a small world” while continuing the legacy of the message behind one of Disney’s most beloved theme park attractions,” said Robert Oberschelp, director, Disney Collections, DCP. “Walt Disney’s vision is as powerful and true today as it was when he first shared it with the world.”

The Disney It’s a Small World by LeSportsac Collection is available online at LeSportsac.com and at all LeSportsac flagship boutiques worldwide. LeSportsac is also available at better department stores and select specialty stores.
