'Marvel's The Avengers' is Coming to Blu-ray and DVD September 25, 2012

With ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ still dominating the box office in it’s third consecutive weekend, and showing no signs of slowing down, Disney and Marvel have announced a release date for the superhero epic to hit home video of September 25, 2012. There will be three different releases, including a 4 disc 3D combo back, 2 Disc blu-ray combo pack, and a 2 disc DVD combo pack. Featuring a great selection of special features including deleted scenes, an alternate opening and ending, a new Marvel One Shot short film, and an audio commentary with Joss Whedon, these are just the tip of the iceberg of what will be a very exciting set to pick up. ‘The Avengers’ is my favorite film of the year, so I definitely can’t wait to pick this one up.  There is also a rumor that we’ll be seeing a ten disc Marvel box set that will encompass the entire first phase of the Marvel cinematic universe.

I hope that’s true, because I’d love to get my hands on it! Are you excited to add ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ to your blu-ray and DVD collection? And what special features are you most looking forward to?

Top Five Animal Kingdom Attractions For Adults

Top Five Animal Kingdom Attractions For Adults

Let me start this off by saying that I didn’t used to like Disney’s Animal Kingdom, I thought it was just a big zoo and found it to honestly be a little boring. I had only been once before, right after it had opened when all the attractions weren’t even completed, so I got to thinking, maybe I didn’t give it enough of a chance. So when I visited Walt Disney World last month, I vowed to visit Animal Kingdom with open eyes and an open mind.

We started our day with breakfast at Tusker House – which was really delicious, they offered the typical disney breakfast buffet, and had some more traditional African choices as well, including bobotie (a quiche-like beef pie with egg, curry and other spices), mealie pap (similar to cream of wheat, and other delicious choices. It is a character meal, where Donald greets you upon arrival, and Daisy (whom we really enjoyed seeing, can you tell??), Goofy, Mickey and Minnie circulate the dining room while you eat. It’s loud and full of children and families, and we had a great time there. Once we were nice and full, it was time to give Animal Kingdom a second chance…

Navigating Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe

Navigating Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe

A burger joint, is a burger joint, is a burger joint.  Right???   Well…sometimes!  But, other times, it takes a little know how.  My favorite burger joint at Disney World  is more than just that!  The Magic Kingdom’s Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe takes a little jedi skill!  Today I am sharing some tips for ordering from this out of the world quick service restaurant.  Hopefully, it will take you to infinity and beyond!

Launch (Logistics of the location)

Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe can be found in the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland.  With a location central to Tomorrowland, Cosmic Ray’s has entrances facing the castle (near the Tea Cups) as well as on the Tomorrowland side (doors lead to the hub of Tomorrowland, the PeopleMover).  Cosmic Ray’s offers something in the line of quick service for everyone in your party.  There are burgers, sandwiches, salads, and chicken.  There’s plenty of great seating.  Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, you find out that there are wonderful views of the castle and even a little show to go with dinner.  As a child, my favorite parts of this restaurant were a.) Sonny Eclipse and the Earth Angels (he’s an animatronic lounge singer from somewhere out there…in space) b.) the condiment bar (think accouterments for your food). Now that you know where to go, let the mission begin!

Disney to Raise Walt Disney World Ticket Prices

Disney to Raise Walt Disney World Ticket Prices

According to WDW Magic, ticket prices will soon be increasing at the Walt Disney World Resort. One day tickets could increase from the current price of $85 to $89. Prices for Anual Passes will likely increase as well. Disney has already increased the price of the Premier Passport, which allows you to visit both Disneyland and Walt Disney World from $749 to $849.

This news comes on the heels of price increases at the Disneyland Resort. There was an increase in all regular and park hopper ticket options as well as Annual Passes. While no official announcement has been made concerning Walt Disney World, Disney usually increases ticket prices on an annual  basis. Last year this happened in June.

Will Disney’s price increases affect your Disney travel plans?

‘The Secret World of Arrietty’ Blu-ray Review

'The Secret World of Arrietty' Blu-ray Review

There are few tales as timeless as ‘The Borrowers’, the acclaimed book series by Mary Norton. I remember growing up watching a live action adaptation starring John Goodman, Jim Broadbent, and Tom Felton, just a few years before he would become Draco Malfoy. I’ve always enjoyed the books, so I was really excited when I heard that Studio Ghibli had decided to take a swing at the stories. And let me say, they did not disappoint. ‘The Secret World of Arrietty’ is not only one of the studios best films to date, but one of the best films of the year. It’s a truly great film with an adventurous spirit, but one that also has some emotional heft that really knocks the wind out of you. With a great voice cast including Will Arnett, Bridgit Mendler, Amy Poehler, Moises Arias, David Henrie, and Carol Burnett, this movie has the chance to be my favorite animated movie of the year, and I’m wondering if anything can top this.

The Borrowers live in secret under the floor boards, never disturbing the world around them. They do what they have to do to get by, often borrowing things from the human hosts around them. Arrietty (Mendler) is an adventurous spirit and can’t wait to go on her first borrowing with her father, against her mother’s wishes. But during her first borrowing, David (Henrie), a young boy who has just moved into the house to be taken care of by his aunt, discovers Arrietty and her father. Having heard stories of the little people before, David decides to befriend Arrietty, something Arrietty’s parents don’t agree with. But when the housekeeper, Hara (Burnett), begins to take notice of David’s actions, she begins a hunt to find the little people she’s always heard rumors of.

Disney Launches "Where's My Water?" Merchandise Line

Disney Mobile and Disney Consumer Products (DCP) today announced the first line of merchandise based on Disney’s hit mobile game, “Where’s My Water?”. The new line extends the story of Swampy the Alligator, Disney’s first original character for mobile, and includes an impressive line-up of licensees and retailers including, Hasbro, Inc., JAKKS Pacific/CDI, and Toys”R”Us. The “Where’s My Water?” merchandise line also features Cranky, Swampy’s reluctant friend and the alpha-male of the group, and Allie, the female alligator who humors Swampy’s attempts to bring human culture to alligators.

Designed to resonate with fans of the popular game, the first wave of “Where’s My Water?” product will be available at mass retailers nationwide in June, with select items available now at Disney Store locations and DisneyStore.com. The line features: plush and novelty toys, consumer electronics accessories, and apparel and accessories. The second wave of product coming this fall will expand to include a face-to-face game, consumer electronics, stationery, home accessories, and Halloween costumes.

“‘Where’s My Water?’ has quickly become one of the most popular titles in mobile gaming history, making Swampy one of the most beloved characters ever born from a mobile franchise,” said Disney Mobile Bart Decrem, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Mobile. “Launching a line of Disney merchandise just seven months after hitting the App Store is a testament to the cultural relevance Swampy and his friends have already achieved.”

Epcot’s Coral Reef Resturant Review

Epcot's Coral Reef Resturant Review

I remember in the 80’s when Epcot opened, my family visited the Living Seas. I remember thinking that it was one really huge aquarium as I descended in my hydrolater and then rode my seacab (does anybody remember those things?) to “Seabase Alpha”. In fact, the Living Seas IS a huge aquarium filled with 5.7 million gallons of salt-water and over 6,000 sea creatures.

The Coral Reef Restaurant actually opened in 1986 at the same time as the rest of the Pavilion. In the 26 years that it opened and all the many times we have visited Epcot in those 26 years, I have never made an ADR (Advanced Dining Reservation) at the Coral Reef.

However, on the “girls leg” of my trip in February, my daughter said she’d like to eat somewhere different. So I went on my smart phone to the mobile Disney Dining Reservations site and booked a table for two, for later that day so we could “eat with the fish“!

We arrived at the Restaurant and checked in. There was actually a bit of drama all around us, as a large family was trying to get themselves coordinated to celebrate their parents anniversary. They took up, I kid you not, most of the dining room. I stood and waited significantly longer than I thought I would.

Pixar’s Brave Merida Meet and Greet at Magic Kingdom Park

Pixar's Brave Merida Meet and Greet at Magic Kingdom Park

Merida, the adventurous heroine from Disney•Pixar’s upcoming feature film, “Brave,” has begun making special appearances at Fairytale Garden in Magic Kingdom Park. In this setting, young guests are invited to engage in archery practice and other activities, in addition to meeting Merida and mischievous bear cubs from the film. Take a look.

My little boys can hardly wait to see “Brave,” and they’re definitely going to want to meet Merida. They’re excited to try out the bows and arrows, and they’ve already fallen for the bear cubs, after just glimpsing them in trailers for the movie.

For guests at Disneyland park, Merida’s bringing some of this Scottish fun to you too, in an area across from “it’s a small world,” and everyone will discover more about Merida’s epic story when “Brave” opens in theaters June 22.

Top 5 Ideas For Going Beyond the Attractions

Top 5 Ideas For Going Beyond the Attractions

Walt Disney World is one of those vacation spots we feel like we can visit again and again. Not everyone understands that, of course, and we Disney addicts get questions along the lines of “But weren’t you just there?” all the time. What those people fail to understand, and what we Disney addicts love so much, is how different the Disney parks are from other theme parks. Sure Disney has great rides and shows, there is something for everyone, from Expedition Everest to It’s A Small World, but the parks offer a lot beyond the attractions. This fall our family is headed to Walt Disney World for an 8-day trip, our longest in quite a while. Our son will be almost 13 and a Disney veteran. We are of course looking forward to all our favorite attractions, but this year and on future trips we will take the time to explore the parks a little deeper. Here are our Top 5 Ideas For Going Beyond the Attractions.

Imagineering –There are tons of books about Disney Imagineering. I’m working my way through the four Imagineering Field Guides, one for each park, and can’t wait to try to spot all the little details these books point out. The Disney parks were built to be immersive experiences and to tell stories. The imagineering team takes a lot of tricks from cinema to pull this off, such as using forced perspective (building the top of a structure smaller in scale than the bottom) to make structures seem taller than they actually are. They designed the transition areas between the “lands” of the Magic Kingdom to be smooth and not jarring to visitors. They use landscaping and architecture and art and technology in subtle ways to make the guests at Disney parks feel like they are inside another world. These things are meant to be unobtrusive, but we are planning to seek them out and learn a little about what makes the magic work

Hidden Mickeys — These are perhaps the worst kept “secret” in Disney world.  There are books and web sites devoted to the search for these sets of three circles resembling in various degrees the familiar head and ears of Mickey Mouse. They can be found all over the place, from the attractions to the restaurants to the resorts. Most are intentional and some are coincidence, but the search is fun either way.

Disney Benchmarks — Surveyors and architects use certain fixed points of reference to help in their design and construction work. Many times, these are brass disks a few inches in diameter set in sidewalks and walls. Disney’s designers use these benchmarks as well, but in true Disney style, theirs are just a bit cooler. There are benchmark disks all throughout the Disney property featuring a stylized globe with Mickey ears and the words “Walt Disney World Survey Marker.” Finding these little disks is tricky as they tend to be in seemingly random places and crowds are usually walking right over them, but there are a few websites that can help. Patty Winter’s Disney Benchmark Pages offers either a latitude and longitude for the benchmarks she and her readers have discovered, or sometimes just a general description of the location. We plan to bring our handheld GPS unit loaded with the coordinates, but most smart phones have a working GPS feature which will make hunting these benchmarks much easier. And we hope to find some not on the page so we can add to the list.

Funky Photography — Everyone gets the obligatory shot of the family at the end of Main Street in front of the Cinderella Castle, right? But the Disney parks offer so much more to even the most amateur photographer if you look hard. Disney is all about detail, the names of imagineers and others on the windows of shops on Main Street and the funny tombstones in the Haunted Mansion queue are just a couple ideas. There’s a lot to see and to photograph in about all the queues for Disney attractions, actually. How about the topiary, or the flowers or the fountains? Looking around you with a careful eye instead of rushing from one ride to the next can be a lot of fun, and who knows, you could end up with some new artwork for the living room to remind you of your trip.

Behind The Scenes Tours — Sure it’s fun to research the hidden side of Disney and then go look for it yourself, but for a true look at what goes on “behind the curtain” you’ll want to try one of Disney’s behind the scenes tours. Disney offers a wide range of tour experiences, allowing you to do everything from get a glimpse into the utilidors under the Magic Kingdom to swim in the dolphin tank at Living Seas. There’s a tour that explores the steam trains, one that focuses on the gardens, one that takes you across a rope bridge over crocodiles and one that takes you behind the scenes at all four theme parks in one day. Some of these tours require park admission and some don’t. Some have age requirements as well. We are looking forward to the big behind the scenes tour ourselves, but need to wait a few years as guests must be at least 16 to participate and our son is only 12.
