List of 2013 Holiday Events at Disneyland & California Adventure

viva

Holidays at the Disneyland Resort are filled with an abundance of merriment, tradition and new experiences this year, including the debut of “World of Color − Winter Dreams.” The all-new version of “World of Color” in Disney California Adventure Park brings the spirit of the holidays to life with music, humor and the joy of the season.

Hosted by Olaf the snowman, from the upcoming Walt Disney Pictures animated feature “Frozen,” the “World of Color − Winter Dreams” show combines new animation with classic winter scenes from beloved Disney and Disney•Pixar films, such as “Bambi,” “Fantasia” and “Toy Story.” The show includes new music and special effects, including new methods for utilizing the massive “stage” of water, color and light that comes to life with the power of nearly 1,200 fountains.

Also new in Disney California Adventure, “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!” takes over Paradise Gardens with a daily celebration inspired by the warmth and joyous spirit of Latino culture and holiday traditions. From Nov. 15 through Jan. 6, 2014, “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!” offers special activities such as live Latino music, dance lessons, crafts and face painting for children and a “Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Street Party.” The festivities also include traditional holiday foods and appearances by some popular Disney characters. The grand finale of “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!” will be the special celebration of Three Kings Day (Dia de los Reyes) Jan. 3 through 6, 2014 in Paradise Garden.

These new experiences join a merry lineup of Disneyland Resort holiday traditions that begin Nov. 12, including “A Christmas Fantasy” parade, “Believe…in Holiday Magic” fireworks and snowfall on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland Park, plus special seasonal décor on Buena Vista Street, along with whimsical décor in Cars Land and a bug’s land in Disney California Adventure. Characters also make holiday appearances and the skippers of Jingle Cruise add some new holiday fun.

At Disney California Adventure Park:

In addition to all the holiday cheer in “World of Color – Winter Dreams” and “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!,” Disney California Adventure gets a spectacular seasonal makeover:

  • A whimsical “snowcar” (the Radiator Springs version of a snowman) stands at the entrance to Cars Land, and each address along Route 66 – Flo’s V-8 Café, Fillmore’s, Cozy Cone Motel, Luigi’s Casa della Tires and more – features holiday décor that reflects the personality of the “Cars” character who lives there.
  • A dazzling, 50-foot Christmas tree adorns Carthay Circle along Buena Vista Street. The tree and surrounding buildings, inspired by Los Angeles as it appeared when Walt Disney arrived in the 1920s, are decorated with vintage-style ornaments.
  • Children of all ages may visit a classic department store Santa at Elias & Co., the main department store along Buena Vista Street.
  • Wintertime fun rocks the night at “Mad T Party” as Alice and the Mad Hatter add their own brand of off-kilter holiday spirit to the nighttime celebration in Hollywood Land.
  • “A bug’s land” transforms as Flik and his bug buddies spread giant Christmas lights and oversized ornaments throughout their realm.
  • A Holiday edition of the street show, “Phineas and Ferb’s Rockin’ Rollin’ Dance Party,” includes festive décor, costumes and holiday tunes. The show invites guests of all ages to “seize the day,” dancing and singing on Paradise Pier with the Disney Channel’s inventive animated boy geniuses.

At Disneyland Park:

Two new experiences come to life in Disneyland this November, revealing the worlds of exciting new films, the comedy adventure “Frozen” and the epic adventure “Thor: The Dark World.” In Tomorrowland, Thor: Treasures of Asgard invites guests into a column of light and color which magically transports them from Disneyland to the home world of Thor, the Mighty Avenger. In Fantasyland, guests meet the enchanting sisters from “Frozen” – the fearless and optimistic Anna, and Elsa, who has the power to control snow and ice.

Also new, the popular Jungle Cruise attraction dashes through the holiday season as Jingle Cruise. The adventurous skippers in Adventureland celebrate the holidays by decorating their dock and boathouse with ornaments sent from home, augmented with their own plants, flowers, rope and items from their jungle surroundings. Passengers aboard the Jingle Cruise are treated to a stocking full of new Yuletide patter as they sail past familiar jungle scenes: “All those baby elephants want is their two trunk teeth.”

Many long-standing holiday traditions delight Disneyland guests throughout the season, including:

  • Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle – A sensational holiday lighting and special-effects show carries the magic of the holidays from the castle all the way to the 60-foot tall Disneyland Christmas tree in Town Square. The finale of the show includes the legendary “Believe … in Holiday Magic” fireworks show, ending with a touching rendition of “White Christmas,” along with a climactic snowfall swirling upon Main Street, U.S.A., “it’s a small world” Mall and New Orleans Square.
  • “A Christmas Fantasy” Parade – On Main Street, U.S.A., Disney characters celebrate the magic of the season, wrapping gifts, baking holiday treats and preparing for the arrival of Santa Claus, who shouts a jolly greeting to spectators along the parade route. New for 2013, winter skiers (on roller skis) glide around a frost-covered pine tree, Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen from “The Princess and the Frog” join the Candlelight Costume Ball, and a corps of Finale Dancers in gorgeous Dickens-era costumes lead the way for Santa and his reindeer.
  • “It’s a small world” Holiday becomes a worldwide celebration of the season, boasting more than 300,000 glittering lights on its façade and, inside, the children of many nations in their holiday attire. New for 2013, the smiling clock at the front of “it’s a small world” reveals a sparkling, new projection show. After dark, on every quarter hour, the façade of the attraction is transformed into an enormous clockwork mechanism with advanced 3D-projection technology. The gears and springs pull back to reveal a world of holiday wonders hidden behind the clock.
  • Haunted Mansion Holiday presents a madcap celebration as the traditions of Halloween and Christmas collide. The ghoulish but well-meaning Jack Skellington from the film “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” has come to Haunted Mansion to transform it with his skewed vision of the holidays.
  • Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus greet Disneyland guests at Jingle Jangle Jamboree in Big Thunder Ranch, in Frontierland. Children and families can chat with St. Nick, meet Disney characters, and enjoy games, music, crafts and seasonal entertainment

Guests may book the seasonal favorite “Holiday Time at the Disneyland Resort” guided tour which provides entry into “it’s a small world” Holiday and Haunted Mansion Holiday along with reserved seating and a holiday treat while enjoying “A Christmas Fantasy” parade. The tour also includes a view of the holiday décor in Disney California Adventure, a keepsake remembrance and entertaining information about Disneyland holiday traditions.

Holiday Magic throughout Disneyland Resort:

Guests in the Downtown Disney district get into the holiday spirit at the Downtown Disney Winter Village, visiting the quaint cottages, browsing for gifts in the “shopping chalets” and enjoying a 30-foot Christmas tree. Guests also lace up their skates to make spirits bright along the newly themed Olaf’s Frozen Ice Rink. The rink hours are scheduled for 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Disneyland Resort hotels join in the holiday festivities with twinkling lights and ornaments, special entertainment and holiday dining with themed menus. Expanded hours at both Disneyland Resort theme parks extend the family fun and offer more time for guests to enjoy all there is to see and do at the Disneyland Resort.

Club 33 Disneyland Video Tour – Come See this Exclusive Disneyland Club

club 33 disneyland

If you are a big Disney fan, you probably have Club 33 Disneyland on your bucket list.  This was certainly something on my bucket list.  I was excited to get the opportunity recently to go to Club 33 Disneyland with one of our agents.  It was certainly a magical moment for me!

For fellow Disney fans that have not heard of Club 33, this is a private club located inside Disneyland Park in California.  It is very similar to a “country club” where you join and pay for membership.  This exclusive club usually hosts Disney execs and celebrities.  This is also the only place at Disneyland where you can purchase and drink alcohol.  Club 33 is located in New Orleans Square of Disneyland Park.  The entrance to this restaurant is right next to the Blue Bayou Restaurant.  Many times I have stood by the Club 33 Disneyland sign (above), but this time I actually got to ring the bell and go inside.  Come join me at Club 33 at Disneyland Park.

Top 10 Quick Service Restaurants/Meals Under $15 at Disney World

Because we travel to Walt Disney World from NC several times a year and are a single-income household, we have to maintain a strict (and cheap) budget to afford that many trips happen in one year. That means that more often than not, we’re eating quick service meals if we eat in the parks instead of a table service meal. After the first few trips we learned that you don’t have to stick with the mundane burgers and fries for every meal. Disney World actually has quite an array of quick service food options that satisfy the taste buds and wallet. One thing to note is that we usually opt for water instead of buying a soft drink, so that also cuts down on the costs, but we don’t always skimp out on a good dessert. So, here are my Top 10 Quick Service Restaurants/Meals Under $15 at Walt Disney World.

10. Captain Cook’s (Polynesian Resort) – This is a popular place, not because of lunch, but because of the Tonga Toast you can get at breakfast. But, I have to ashamedly admit that I’ve never been there to try it. I know, I know, what is wrong with me? I didn’t know about it for a while, then kept seeing it pop up on everyone’s ‘Must Eat’ lists, so we are for sure going to stop at the Polynesian before heading to Magic Kingdom one day soon to enjoy this fan favorite, especially since it’s under $6.

9. Cosmic Rays Starlight Café (Magic Kingdom) – While the food isn’t anything to write home about really (burgers, sandwiches, rotisserie chicken, etc., all under $10 for the most part), the atmosphere here in the late evenings is great. We love finding a seat near “Sonny Eclipse” who will entertain you with some songs while you eat. Another great thing about this restaurant is that you can sit out on the patio and overlook the water and Cinderella’s castle. If you’re attending Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party this year, be sure to stop in for a cool dance party with characters as well.

8. Sunshine Seasons (EPCOT) – While I’ve never really eaten anything other than breakfast here, this always comes up as a top place to eat from others I know. You can find rotisserie chicken, Asian entrees and sandwiches. The desserts aren’t half bad either (we like the chocolate mousse cake and often eat it for a 10AM snack…). And at about $11 for the most expensive option, you can easily get one of those desserts and keep your meal under $15.

7. Les Halles Boulangerie & Patisserie (EPCOT – France Pavilion) – Just hearing the name makes me think of their Chocolate Mousse, a traditional dessert for us. But they have so many great entrees as well, including hot sandwiches and quiches. This is definitely a budget friendly quick service restaurant with the most expensive entree being just over $9. Your hardest choice will probably be picking which dessert you want with your meal from the plethora of choices.

6. La Cantina de San Angel (EPCOT – Mexico Pavilion) – This isn’t always the favorite quick service counter of a lot of people, but we really enjoyed it. We grabbed a great table overlooking the water and enjoyed the Tacos de Pollo and the yummy Churritos with caramel sauce. The nachos are always plentiful and look yummy as well. We actually shared the entrée/dessert the last time we ate there, so you get quite a bit of food and dessert for the price. The entrees are just under $12 for the most expensive option, so depending on which one you get, you could hit the $16 mark for your entree and dessert.

5. Pecos Bills (Magic Kingdom) – We love Pecos Bills because of two words – Toppings Bar! We can never eat an entire adult burger meal when in the parks, so we typically opt for the $6 Kid’s Cheeseburger Meal instead, as that is enough food for us at lunch. The toppings bar is awesome and you can find typical things like lettuce and tomato, but even better are the grilled onions and the melted cheese. I tend to grab a couple extra cups of the cheese to dip my fries into. Definitely not the healthiest meal, but two adults can eat for under $15 and that’s a winner in my book! Of if you really want to eat an adult size burger, then you’re looking at $10 for the entree at most. The desserts are never really anything to write home about in these types of burger quick service restaurants, so we usually opt-out for dessert here.

4. Flame Tree Barbecue (Animal Kingdom) – If you ask anyone what the best quick service meal is in Animal Kingdom, you will probably hear it’s Flame Tree BBQ. I’m from NC, so I love my BBQ (the vinegar based Eastern NC kind) and even though this isn’t exactly the type I normally eat, this BBQ has a great smoky flavor that I love. My favorite entree is the BBQ Sandwich that costs $9, but my husband loves the ribs & chicken. which will run you about $12. Much like Pecos Bills, the dessert options here are limited to the standard dessert options.

3. Yorkshire County Fish Shop (EPCOT) – I am not a fan of seafood at all, so I tend to avoid eating it at all costs. However, I love the fish and chips here and it’s my weakness when I visit EPCOT. The beer-battered fish is so flavorful and the chips are awesome as well. You can’t go wrong here. Beware though, it is a bit greasy, so grab some extra napkins to soak up the grease. A basket of 2 fish strips with chips will cost you $9 and they keep raising the price nearly ever time we visit it seems. They only have one dessert option here, so we just skip getting dessert with our entree and instead walk over to France afterwards for an awesome dessert.

2. Earl of Sandwich (Downtown Disney) – this is the cheapest and best sandwich you will find on property. Forget those other popular sandwich shops, once you have an Earl of Sandwich meal, every other sandwich will seem mediocre. Their warm toasted bread really makes the sandwich in my opinion. And don’t let the long lines deter you away from trying it – they are really fast and efficient at moving the lines and getting your order up quickly. At only $6 for the sandwich, we can both easily eat for under $15 total.

1. Be Our Guest (Magic Kingdom) – This is by far our favorite location to grab a quick service meal, so much so that we’re eating there at least twice during our next trip. We were actually there for the official opening day back in 2012 and quickly fell in love with both the atmosphere and the food. The braised pork is the most expensive menu option at $12, but it is absolutely mouth-watering (think of it as a pot roast, only made with pork). The cupcakes are heavenly and can beat any other Disney cupcake in a heartbeat, especially with their $2.99 price.  Because the food is so great at lunch, we don’t feel the need to spend the extra money for the table service dinner option…

You probably noticed that I didn’t list anything from Hollywood Studios here and there’s a reason why – we’ve yet to really find any great quick service meal there. We usually end up leaving the parks before lunch and grabbing something to eat elsewhere. This seems to be the consensus among others who have visited as well.

Did I miss another great Under $15/meal Quick Service location? What are some of your favorite Quick Service meals?

Disney Dining News – Spice Road Table Coming to Morocco Pavilion at Epcot World Showcase

MOROCCAN SOUK COLOR ILLUSTRATION FNL 1024x472
MOROCCAN SOUK COLOR ILLUSTRATION FNL 1024x472

SR

Spice Road Table is coming soon to Epcot’s Morocco Pavilion at Walt Disney World Resort, offering a variety of Moroccan small plates and specialty drinks.  While we don’t have official word on the exact opening date, we know it’s coming soon! I took the photo below just last month, and things appear to be coming along quickly.

Spice Road Table

So what can we look forward to at Spice Road Table?

Regional flavors from the Mediterranean will be highlighted. Small plates are always great because you get to try a variety of new dishes, and Spice Road Table will offer these for sure. Items on the menu will include zesty harissa chicken drumettes; a Mediterranean omelet with sausage, potatoes and caramelized onion; mussels with preserved lemons and tomato sauce baked in an earthenware tagine pot; Moroccan merguez sausage with a fresh tomato salad; garlicky jumbo shrimp in a spicy chile pepper sauce. Guests can wash it all down with what is sure to be a fabulous menu of unique Moroccan cocktails.  They are sure to be very creative and different!

Spice Road Table will also offer another perfect location to view “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” in the evenings. With 120 outdoor terrace seats outside and 60 cozy booths inside, this restaurant will help accommodate the overwhelming number of guests who prefer dining during this show at Epcot, which is always an amazing experience. During the day, we can look out onto the beautiful World Showcase lagoon, which in itself is wonderful and relaxing. Also featured inside will be Moroccan light fixtures, tilework, tapestries and art representing Morocco’s indigenous Berber tribes.

On the outside of the restaurant there will be a whitewashed facade that is accented in icy shades of blue. These beautiful blues are inspired by the famous “Blue City of Chefchaouen in Morocco’s Rif Mountains. As with all the Pavilions in World Showcase, authenticity is key! A collection of shops in the colorful style of a Moroccan “souk,” or marketplace, will stretch along the front of the building. You can see the concept art at the top of this post to get an idea of what’s to come. To top it all off – there will even be a  a henna tattoo artist nearby to create temporary body art for a fee. The henna tattoo artist will offer  both traditional and modern designs.

Spice Road Table is the third eatery in the Morocco pavilion, joining The Tangierine Café, which features a variety of Moroccan sandwiches and specialty pastries, and Restaurant Marrakesh, where savory dishes, Moroccan music and belly dancers showcase the authentic charm of the North African country.
