Five Manatees Successfully Rehabilitated at Two Ohio Zoos
A significant milestone has been achieved as five manatees, rehabilitated over two years by four zoological and marine institutions, were flown back to Florida to continue their recovery journey.
The manatees, all orphans, were transported in custom-built containers from Cincinnati International Airport to their temporary homes in Florida. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, ZooTampa at Lowry Park, and SeaWorld Orlando have been collaborating on their rehabilitation.
Dr. Joseph Gaspard, Vice President of Zoological Operations at SeaWorld Orlando, emphasized the importance of manatee conservation and the partnership’s role in rescuing, rehabilitating, and returning these animals to their natural habitat. SeaWorld Orlando’s critical care facility is equipped to handle up to 60 manatees simultaneously, ensuring ample space for rehabilitation.
Two male manatees, Nighthawk and Mr. Dobak, were transferred from the Columbus Zoo to SeaWorld Orlando. They were rescued as orphaned calves in Charlotte County, Florida, in January 2023 and have made significant progress in their rehabilitation.
Three female manatees, Nolia, Amethyst, and Waffles, were moved from the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden to ZooTampa’s David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center. They were rescued earlier this year and received intensive care before being transferred to Cincinnati for continued rehabilitation.
DHL Express played a crucial role in transporting the manatees, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the flight. The manatees were monitored closely by care specialists and provided with a comfortable environment during the journey.
While the manatees prepare to return to their native waters, the conservation efforts to protect this species continue. Six additional manatees were transported from Florida to Ohio for further rehabilitation.
The Columbus Zoo received three orphaned manatees, including Cobble, Clawford, and Sabal. They will join Stubby, a long-term resident who is unable to return to the wild due to injuries. The Cincinnati Zoo welcomed three new manatees, Lilypad, Orchid, and Vora, from SeaWorld Orlando.
The manatees were rescued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP). The MRP is a collaborative effort involving various organizations working to conserve manatees.
ZooTampa and SeaWorld Orlando provide critical care to injured manatees in Florida, while the Columbus and Cincinnati zoos serve as second-stage rehabilitation facilities. These zoos have a successful track record of rehabilitating and returning manatees to their natural habitat. Sounds like a happy ending to for these amazing creatures!
A New Sumatran Tiger Cub is Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is celebrating the arrival of a new and adorable Sumatran tiger cub! Born to proud mom Sohni, the little tiger is named Bakso. This tiny bundle of joy represents a significant milestone in conservation efforts for this critically endangered species.
Tiger births are a rare occurrence in managed care, making Bakso’s arrival even more special. Dr. Natalie, one of the veterinarians involved in Sohni’s care, expressed her excitement, stating, “Tigers are in steep decline in the wild, so it is very special to welcome a new baby here at Disney.”
Bakso’s birth offers a glimmer of hope for the survival of Sumatran tigers. With fewer than 600 individuals left in the wild, every new cub is crucial to preserving the species’ genetic diversity.
Disney has a long history of working with organizations like the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the Species Survival Plan (SSP) to protect endangered species. The birth of Bakso is a testament to their dedication to conservation efforts.
The animal care team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom closely monitored Sohni’s pregnancy using advanced technology. Regular blood tests and ultrasounds ensured the health and well-being of both mother and cub. Bakso will spend the next 18-24 months under his mother’s watchful eye. Guests can expect to see the adorable cub and his mom exploring Maharajah Jungle Trek in the near future.
Beyond the care of animals in their parks, Disney is actively involved in protecting tigers in the wild. The Disney Conservation Fund supports organizations working to conserve tiger habitats and combat poaching.

Disney Reveals Pricing for New Lightning Lane Premier Pass — and It’s Not Cheap
Disney World is rolling out a new offering for those willing to splurge: the Lightning Lane Premier Pass. Starting October 30, 2024, guests staying at Disney Deluxe Resorts, Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts, and select hotels can purchase this pass to skip standby lines at top attractions. But be ready to open your wallet—the price ranges from $129 to a jaw-dropping $449 per pass (plus tax), depending on the date and park, with the rollout information noting those highest prices will be reserved for a limited number of peak holiday periods.
The Premier Pass comes with some added convenience. Unlike other Lightning Lane options, it lets you access each available Lightning Lane attraction in one park for the day without having to book specific time slots. It also includes perks like digital downloads of ride photos and videos via Disney PhotoPass. However, it’s worth noting that the pass is limited to one park per day, and quantities are very limited, so not everyone will be able to grab one.
For comparison, Universal Orlando’s Express Pass—which also lets you skip lines at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure costs less, ranging from $89.99 to $289.99, depending on the time of year (a park to park option is also available for an increased price). Plus, guests staying at Universal’s Premier Resorts receive Express Pass Unlimited for free, giving them unlimited access to shorter lines for the duration of their stay. When you stack up the two options, Disney’s Lightning Lane Premier Pass comes with a much higher price tag, and it’s only available for one park per day.
For Disney die-hards staying at deluxe resorts, the Lightning Lane Premier Pass might be tempting, but it’s definitely an investment—and far from a budget-friendly way to enjoy the parks. Work is set to begin on ‘The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure’ marquee
Although fans will have to wait until 2025 for the debut of The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, exciting progress is already underway. Disney Imagineering recently filed a permit to install a marquee for the all-new show, signaling that work is beginning on the exterior of the former Voyage of the Little Mermaidtheater.
The permit lists the installation site as 755 Stage Lane, Bay Lake, FL, just behind the long-closed theater. The project has been assigned to Design Communications Ltd., a company with a long history of working on Disney projects. While no expiration date is listed for the permit, this filing marks an important step in transforming the theater into a home for the new Little Mermaid production.
The original Voyage of the Little Mermaid never reopened following the COVID-19 park closures, leaving the theater vacant for years. However, this reimagined show promises to breathe new life into the space with a blend of classic storytelling and state-of-the-art technology. Earlier this week, Disney announced that the show’s opening would be delayed to summer 2025, giving Imagineers extra time to perfect this ambitious production.
Set to feature live performers, puppets, physical sets, and stunning digital imagery, The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure is shaping up to be an innovative experience.
