Frozen Musical coming to Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure park

The new musical adaptation which is based on Disney’s movie Frozen will be opening in Disney California Adventure starting May 27, 2016. The new show is called “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion”.

Frozen – Live at the Hyperion,” a new musical based on Disney’s animated blockbuster film, will open at the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure Park on May 27, 2016.  Audiences will be immersed in the emotional journey of Anna and Elsa with all of the excitement of live theater, in an entertaining musical adaptation that includes elaborate costumes and sets, stunning special effects, show-stopping production numbers and unique theatrical surprises.

Disney Creative Entertainment, the arm of Walt Disney Imagineering responsible for live theatrical entertainment at Disney Parks, is producing “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” with all of the creativity and resources of its predecessor “Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” which ran for a remarkable 13 years, with a total of 14,000 performances to 13 million park guests at the Hyperion Theater.

The 1,873-seat Hyperion is equipped with a backstage facility to support a production of the kind that plays in any venue of that size in the world, as well as the full creativity of Walt Disney Imagineering.

“Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” is based on the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ film “Frozen,” which is the No. 1 animated feature of all time and among the most critically acclaimed animated films. It is the winner of two Academy Awards (2014), for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.

“While our production of ‘Frozen’ will stay true to the heart and soul of the film, we have adapted it for the stage so it’s truly a musical theatre production that befits our beautiful Hyperion Theater,” said Dana Harrel, creative entertainment executive with Walt Disney Imagineering.  “The goal of this creative team is to take all audiences – including those that know the film, and those new to these characters – on this exciting and touching adventure with Anna and Elsa.

“We know that for many in the audience — adults and children alike – this production will be a first or rare theatergoing experience.  We undertake this responsibility with seriousness as we adapt the film to the stage.”

The new musical features music and lyrics by the creators of the film score, Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“In Transit,” “Up Here”) and Robert Lopez (“Avenue Q,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Up Here”), and is adapted from the screenplay by four-time Tony® nominee Chad Beguelin (“Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” at Hyperion Theater; Broadway: “Gotta Dance,” “Aladdin,” “The Wedding Singer,” “Elf”).

Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” is directed by Liesl Tommy, who is currently represented on Broadway with “Eclipsed,” starring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o. The choreographer is Christopher Windom and this is his seventh collaboration with Tommy.  The musical supervisor/arranger/adaptor is Jason Michael Webb, whose Broadway credits include “The Color Purple,” “Motown: The Musical,” “Violet,” and “Memphis.”

A great variety of creative energies has been employed to bring “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” to the stage.  Harrel and Tommy have assembled a team of creative talent from both Broadway and Walt Disney Imagineering to create this production. The principal designers are Robert Brill (scenery), Clint Ramos (costumes), Charles Lapointe (wigs) David Weiner (lighting), Aaron Rhyne (projections) and Broken Chord (audio).

As the audience anticipates the rise of the curtain, guests will find that the interior of the Hyperion Theater is entirely wrapped, immediately immersing the audience in the world of “Frozen.”  As part of the scenic design, large set elements will move the action in a cinematic way, allowing the production a great forward narrative energy, accompanied by state-of the-art projections that allow the actors to have a greater sense of movement and a sound design that completely envelops the audience in the story.

And of course there will be snow throughout the interior of the theater – on stage and over the audience.

And as would be expected from Walt Disney Imagineering and Disney Parks, new technologies – especially with projections, fabrics and special effects – will delight audiences in new and unique ways.

The challenge of bringing Olaf and the Trolls to the stage has been assigned to master puppet designer Michael Curry, who co-designed with director Julie Taymor the puppets of “The Lion King” on Broadway, the magic mirror in “Snow White” at Fantasyland Theatre, and many other Disney parades, shows and projects, as well as projects for the Olympics, Cirque du Soleil and the Metropolitan Opera.

An entirely separate Broadway production of “Frozen” is currently being prepared by Disney Theatrical Productions and is slated to join Disney Theatrical’s New York productions of “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” for spring 2018 at a theater to be announced. It will have a pre-Broadway engagement starting in summer 2017 in Denver.

Are you going to miss Aladdin? Or do you think a change to Frozen is a good thing?

B Resort & Spa --- exterior -- Disney Springs Resort Area Hotels

Next week I have the opportunity to check out the B Resort & Spa at Disney Springs! I have heard nothing but wonderful things about this resort and I am looking forward to staying here while we are at Disney World for our wedding planning. The B Resort and Spa is one of the 7 Disney Springs Resort Area Hotels.

Here is a little information about the B Resort & Spa:

B Resort and Spa, an Official Walt Disney World Hotel, is a new lifestyle resort near the Disney Springs area. The resort features 394-newly renovated guest rooms and suites that showcase stylish, yet playful, décor and are equipped with the most desirable amenities.

Guests are invited to enjoy incredible onsite amenities, such as the zero-entry pool; creative culinary concepts, FreeB WiFi and the B Indulged by AVEDA full-service spa. Guests can ride the complimentary shuttle to all Walt Disney World Theme Parks and the Disney Springs area, receive preferred tee times at Disney championship golf courses, and explore the nearby, expansive retail outlets.

Whether planning a fun-filled vacation or attending the corporate event of the season, B Resort & Spa, located in the Walt Disney World Resort, is where you’ll want to B.

B Resort & Spa -- Night Exterior (1600x1021)

I first noticed the B Resort & Spa while driving by one night. It really stands out among all the other Disney Springs Resorts. My writer Courtney was able to visit the American Kitchen Bar & Grill for Octoberfest last year and she raved on how good the food was! They serve classic “Comfort Foods” with contemporary ingredients, sounds very promising.

B Resort & Spa --- guest room --- Disney Springs Resort Area Hotels

I have only seen photos of the rooms but look at that interior, so modern and stylish.

B Resort and Spa_Guest Room_2 (2500x1572)

Before you think this resort is only for adults here is a photo of one of their family suites. Love the bunk beds!

I will be checking into the B Resort & Spa on Monday and will be posting photos on the Chip and Co Instagram from Monday to Thursday. When I get back I will write up a full review of this beautiful resort and let you know if it lives up to the glowing reviews from all of my friends.

Star-Wars-Land_Full_26856

It was announced Thursday at the Walt Disney Co.’s annual shareholder meeting that ground will be broken on both Disneyland and Walt Disney World‘s Star Wars Land next month. Bob Iger, CEO of Disney hasn’t given any official dates but did mention the 14 acre sites in California and Florida will be fantastic.

Iger said at the shareholders meeting;

“We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that will transport guests into the ‘Star Wars’ story”

A lot of attractions have been closed down in Hollywood Studios recently to make room for Star Wars Land. While we wait for Star Wars Land to open Hollywood Studios has opened Star Wars attractions such as Star Wars Launch Bay, with movie memorabilia and props; also a short film which looks at the franchise’s history and future. There is also a meet-and-greet opportunities with characters and the Jedi Training Academy has received an updated.

Even with all this Star Wars we still can’t wait for Star Wars Land to open!

If EPCOT has been looking especially lovely lately, then the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival must have begun!

The EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival is an annual celebration of the beauty of flowers, gardening, delicious food and family fun. This year the festival opened on March 2nd and will run through May 30th – a full 90 days!

This is the 23rd year for the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival and boy has it grown! This year’s theme is “Fresh Food, Fun & Flowers” and features:

  • 30 million blooms, 500,000 plants, trees and shrubs, 700 container gardens, 200 floating mini-gardens, and 40 orange-and-green sunburst “flower towers”.
  • 13 outdoor kitchens offering over 30 tasting-sized entrees and over 50 beverage selections.
  • A beautiful Floral Sun topiary in golden colors (located behind Spaceship Earth).
  • Character topiaries throughout the park, including Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Prince Charming, Winnie the Pooh and Friends, and Frozen favorites Anna and Elsa!
  • Play areas for children such as the Cactus Road Rally (near Test Track) and the Music Garden Melodies play area featuring playground equipment for younger and older children, music-themed topiaries and interactive music-making features (walkway near Imagination!).
  • Gardens including Butterflies on the Go butterfly house with nearly 1,000 native butterflies and 2 dozen nectar plants, English Tea Garden, Japanese Mini Garden, and the all new Ranger Mickey & Friends.

Special Fun Fresh Weekends events are offered Friday through Sunday (10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and include complimentary gardening and horticulture demonstrations offered by specialists and the Garden Rocks concert series with well-known music acts such as Starship, the Little River Band, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Night Ranger and the Spinners.  Some weekends have a special theme such as the Outdoor Family Fun Weekend (April 8-10), Earth Day Weekend (April 22-24) and Florida Fresh Weekend (April 29 – May 1).

If you are looking for a more in-depth experience, then you might want to check out one of the special tours being offered during the festival.  The Gardens of the World Tour takes you behind the scenes at EPCOT with a Disney horticulturist where you will learn all about the landscaping at Walt Disney World, and how you can use some of their techniques at home ($69.00 per person, ages 12 and up, reservations recommended).  The complimentary English Tea Garden tour presented by Twinings of London is a 20 minute tour focused on growing and blending herbs.  The Behind the Seeds Tour is an hour-long tour through the indoor gardens and fish and alligator farming areas of The Land pavilion where you will learn about innovative gardening techniques such as hydroponics.  The Behind the Seeds Tour is offered year-round for a modest fee of $20.00 for adults and $16.00 for children.

The EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival is also a family friendly way to learn about conservation. The Disney Conservation Fund’s core goal is to get kids and families to spend more time outdoors. Many of the gardens throughout the festival were made possible by grants awarded by The Disney Conservation Fund.  If you can, spend a little extra time enjoying the Purple Martins, Backyard Habitat, and Nature Works Everywhere enjoying the beauty and connecting with your family.

Touring Tip!  Pick up a wearable EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival gift card (available at all festival merchandise locations).  You can load the card with any amount of money your like ($15.00 minimum).  The card has a stretchy band attached so you can wear it around your wrist or on a belt loop to keep it handy for quick and easy purchases of festival snacks, beverages and merchandise without having to use to MagicBand and PIN or fish money out of your wallet.  It’s a great budgeting tool, too!

Don’t forget to grab a complimentary passport Garden Passport.  This is a great way to keep track of what you want to see and do, and what you might have missed.  You can also have your passport stamped at each attraction and outdoor kitchen – it makes a great souvenir!  You can find these at festival merchandise locations, also.

Want to see these blooms up close? It’s not too late to plan a visit to Walt Disney World to experience all of the beautiful, educational, and tasty events that the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival has to offer. Contact me at [email protected] to start planning your visit.

Big Thunder Mountain Refurbishment is back on the schedule

2016 01 20 11.11.08
2016 01 20 11.11.08

BTMR

Originally Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was scheduled to be refurbished April 4th through July 15th; we are now being told the refurbishment will take place August 8th through November 18th, reopening on November 19th.

Big thunder mountain has not had a major refurbishment since 2012 although there have been some smaller refurbishments since.

We are hopefully that this long refurbishment will lead to some new great enhancements. Possibly some high tech advancements like what was done in Disneyland.

Check out our current list of Disney World Closures and Refurbishments for the month of March here.

Are you going to miss out on BTMR this fall? Let us know in the comment box below.
