Celebrate National Soup Month with Some of These Amazing Offerings at Disneyland and Disney World

Disney Soups

If there’s a time of year to indulge in a nice warm bowl of soup, its definitely January.  For those traversing the parks in Early 2018, both Disneyland and Disney World have delicious soup options which are perfect for refuelling before heading out for your next FastPass booking.  In celebration of National Soup Month here’s a list of tasty offering on both coasts that you’ll want to try during your next Disney visit.

Disney Soup

We’ll start with our personal favorite, the famous Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup that you’ll find at Le Cellier Steakhouse in Epcot.  It’s made with Moosehead Beer and applewood-smoked bacon.  It pairs perfectly with pretzel bread.  Fans of this soup that don’t want to splash out for a meal at this Fine/Signature Dining eatery are in luck as there’s also a scaled-down version at Refreshment Port which is equally as delicious.

Other favorites at Epcot include the hot-and-sour soup at Nine Dragons Restaurant in the China Pavilion or the beef chili, pumpkin squash soup or roasted tomato soup on offer at Sunshine Seasons.

Moving over to Magic Kingdom, we love the New England clam chowder and the vegetarian chili at Columbia Harbour House in Liberty Square.  Be Our Guest in New Fantasyland also offers an incredible French onion soup topped with a crouton and Gruyère cheese for both the lunch and dinner periods, also vegetarian! For lunch, they also serve up a  Potato Leak Soup and for dinner a delicious a lobster bisque served with crème fraîche.

Guests can also hop the monorail over to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa to try the traditional French onion soup at the Grand Floridian Cafe. Its called the Carmelized Onion Soup Gratinee and trust us when we say it as delicious as it sounds!

Other noteworthy Disney World Soup spots include The Turf Club Bar and Grill at Saratoga Springs which offers a creamy forest mushroom soups with herb oil and shiitake mushrooms.  The Hollywood Brown Derby in Hollywood Studios offers a pretty impressive Florida Tomato Soup served with a Cotswold cheddar fritter.

For those visiting Animal Kingdom, be sure to stop by Tiffins to try their butternut squash soup with coconut-curry poached Key West Pink shrimp or head out to Animal Kingdom Lodge where Boma offers 13 different authentic African soups including the Ghanian Oxtail Stew and the spicy Nigerian peanut-soup.

Heading over to the other coast, we’ll start with a delicious chicken gumbo at Cafe Orleans in New Orleans Square.  Another of our favorites is the classic cheddar broccoli soup or clam chowder served in sourdough bread bowls.

Sourdough bread bowls are pretty popular at Disneyland and you can also find them at Pacific Wharf Cafe in California Adventure which serves up clam chowder, broccoli and cheese and loaded baked potato soups. Carnation Cafe is also offering a baked potato soup with bacon, cheddar, Monterey Jack, sour cream and chives.  And finally, those dining at Carthay Circle Restaurant will want to treat yourself to the roasted parsnip soup accented with winter pears, dried cranberries and rosemary ham.

We promise that none of these delicious dishes will disappoint so be sure to add one to your must-try list during your next Disney visit.

Coronado Springs Las Ventanas Restaurant Lunch Review

Coronado Springs Las Ventanas Restaurant Lunch Review

Even with all of the construction going on at Coronado Springs, Las Ventanas Restaurant is serving up food daily in its magically serene setting.  During a recent stay at Walt Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort, we enjoyed a lovely lunch at this venue.  Here is our Lunch Review of the atmosphere, food, and service we experienced at Las Ventanas.

Las Ventanas Restaurant is located in the main check-in building at Coronado Springs Resort.  You can find this quaint restaurant beyond The Pepper Market as you head towards the Convention Center.  We arrived, on a cool and brisk Wednesday morning, at 11:30 am for Lunch and there was only one other family in the restaurant at this time.   We absolutely loved the feeling of Serenity we felt upon entering this restaurant.  The space is small, giving a sense of a more intimate experience.   For those seeking a quiet and relaxed meal, along with an atmosphere conducive to holding a conversation, Las Ventanas offers all of this and more.

The Lunch Menu has some amazing choices and we had difficulty deciding!

We settled on the Ventanas Burger with Jicama Slaw and the Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Sweet Potato Fries.  The Burger comes with Vermont  Cheddar Cheese and Peppercorn Bacon.  This combination is incredibly delicious.  We also enjoyed the fresh and cooling flavor of the Jicama Slaw.  If you have never tried this type of Slaw before, Las Ventanas Restaurant is definitely the place to give it a try.  The Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwich was exquisite!  We cannot wait to visit again as this dish, along with the beautifully seasoned Sweet Potato Fries, are a must-try.  The combination of Cheeses, on the Sourdough Bread of the Gourmet Grilled Cheese, provides an amazing flavor that is sure to please even the most discerning taste palate.  The Sweet Potato Fries were better than any we have tasted before and we will not likely be able to duplicate them elsewhere.

Coronado Springs Las Ventanas Restaurant Lunch Review

Nelson was our Server and he was wonderful.  He suggested we try the Sweet Potato Fries as we were hesitant about ordering them.  Nelson assured us that they are unlike any other Sweet Potato Fries we have ever had before.   His recommendation was perfectly spot-on as we loved them.   Nelson was attentive, answered all of our questions, was patient and very well-versed on the menu items.

Coronado Springs Las Ventanas Restaurant Lunch Review

The desserts on the menu looked fabulous but we were just too full from our meals.  My Mom and I are planning to head back again as Coronado Springs is now her favorite Walt Disney World Resort.  Lunch at Las Ventanas is at the top of our list and next time we will order the dessert!  If you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere for breakfast,  lunch, or dinner then you will certainly want to try a meal at Las Ventanas Restaurant.  The Disney Dining Plan is accepted here and will use one sit-down meal entitlement per person.  Las Ventanas is open daily from 7:00 am-10:00 pm.  Reservations are suggested, but not required.

Refurbished Room at Pop Century

One of my favorite features in the new Pop Century rooms is the “Pop Art” above the beds. We can expect to see this in the new All-Star Movies Resort rooms too. However, we are not certain if the artwork will be the same as what is at Pop or a bit different!

Once renovations at All-Star Movies are complete, All-Star Music will be next, followed by All-Star Sports.

Room renovations at All-Star Movies are scheduled to begin in late February and be completed in by Winter 2018. We are also hearing renovation at Pop Century will be completed sometime this Summer.

Disney Springs AMC Movie Theater Will No Longer Accept MoviePass

AMC

MoviePass pulled support from some of the chain’s most high-profile locations. One of those locations being the AMC movie theater is Disney Springs. They will no longer be supporting ticket purchases through the MoviePass app or by using a card.

It’s not AMC turning off the spigot, rather it appears to be coming from the MoviePass side. AMC and MoviePass have been publicly at odds since the subscription service drastically cut its monthly subscription price in August 2017. AMC responded by threatening to drop out of MoviePass’ deal, and potentially even file a lawsuit. AMC thinks that by cutting subscription costs, that will result in a situation where theatrical exhibitors wouldn’t be able to charge enough to keep their own businesses afloat.

The MoviePass service is no longer supporting ticket purchases at theaters like the AMC Empire 25 in New York, Universal City Walk near Los Angeles, and the AMC Loews Boston Common.

Mickey Spam Musubi at Disney's Aulani Resort

Leave it to Disney to give Hawaiian comfort food its own magical twist. Aulani resort’s Disney-fied take on Spam musubi is proof!

Spam musubi is a tasty snack typically comprised of sticky rice, fried Spam, soy sauce, and a nori (seaweed) wrap all rolled into a square or rectangular handheld shape. But at Aulani, the musubi come in a different form — they look like Mickey Mouse! Available at Ulu Cafe in limited quantities (they only make one batch per day), the mouse-shaped snack is a perfect grab-and-go option for a day at the pool.

The Egg-stravaganza is Coming Back to Epcot PLUS a New Honey Bee Hunt Added!

Epcot

Epcot

I know it might be freezing cold out there but here’s some news that might warm you up! It’s time to start thinking Spring and Easter. I am happy to report that Epcot’s Egg-stravaganza is back for another year! In addition, a NEW Spike the Honey Bee scavenger hunt has been added!

Epcot

From March 16 through April 1, guests visiting the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival can participate in our Egg-stravaganza scavenger hunt – hunting high and low in World Showcase for “eggs” that portray favorite Disney characters.

As you find the hidden Disney Character-themed “eggs” in the park, you record your discoveries by placing a corresponding sticker on a specially themed Egg-stravaganza map. Maps and stickers can be purchased for $5.99, plus tax at the following parks and locations:

  • Disney Trader
  • Pin Central
  • World Traveler

When you find all of the “eggs” and complete your scavenger hunt map, you then return it to Disney Traders for a sp-egg-tacular surprise.

Epcot Epcot

Also, along with our egg-cellent adventure, we’re featuring a new springtime scavenger hunt called Spike’s Pollen Nation Exploration. In this hunt, Disney’s favorite honey bee, Spike, has been pollinating his way around the festival, giving gardeners of any age the chance to follow his pollination trail around World Showcase at Epcot.

It’s easy to start this new scavenger hunt. Just pick up a garden map and stickers at Port of Entry. Then, it’s time to look for Spike!

As you explore the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, be on the lookout for Spike as he pollinates Epcot’s gardens. In each garden, you’ll have to search for the plant Spike has pollinated, identifiable by Spike himself and a Spike’s Pollen Nation Exploration plant stake. Once you find him, add the corresponding sticker to your map.

After your journey is complete, return your map for a springtime surprise.

Maps and stickers for Spike’s Pollen Nation Exploration can be purchased for $5.99, plus tax at Port of Entry.

Capt. Cook's Polynesian

Capt. Cook's Polynesian

What is your favorite Quick Service Restaurant at Walt Disney World? Mine is Capt. Cook’s at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort mainly because of the Aloha Pork Sandwich! It’s so amazing!

The Aloha Pork Sandwich consists of pulled pork on a Brioche Bun. It is topped with cheddar cheese, Asian slaw, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Of course, it is served with those amazing Capt. Cook’s chips! My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

If you would like to try one for yourself, hop on the Monorail over to the Polynesian Village and go out back to Capt. Cook’s. The Aloha Pork Sandwich is just $10.99 or a Quick Service credit on the Dining Plan.

Passenger Aboard Disney Dream Med-Evaced Due To Medical Complication

Yesterday evening, January 25, The Coast Guard medevaced a 46-year-old man due to medical complications from the Disney Dream 78 miles southeast of West Palm Beach.

Watchstanders with Coast Guard 7th District Command Center received a medevac request from the cruise ship reporting one of their passengers was experiencing medical complications and needed higher care than was available aboard the ship. The watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to assist.

“This was one of those times where every second counted, and I’m very grateful for the professionalism of the Disney crew and the hospital staff in their efforts to transport the patient as safely and efficiently as possible,” said Lt. Michael Wightman, MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircraft commander. “The entire flight crew wishes for the patient’s speedy recovery and a safe return home.”

The helicopter crew arrived on scene with the vessel, hoisted the patient and flew him to Saint Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach for further medical care.

No updates at this time on who the man was or what he was suffering from.
