Tonight is the first night of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and with it, we have a first look at the all-new Theme Park Map from the Magic Kingdom.
Walt Disney Company Fourth Quarter Earnings of 2022
The Walt Disney Company has just released its Fourth Quarter Earnings for 2022 which ended on October 1st, 2022. Disney CEO Bob Chapek had this to say about Disney’s final quarter of 2022.
“2022 was a strong year for Disney, with some of our best storytelling yet, record results at our Parks, Experiences, and Products segment, and outstanding subscriber growth at our direct-to-consumer services, which added nearly 57 million subscriptions this year for a total of more than 235 million,” said Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company.
“Our fourth quarter saw strong subscription growth with the addition of 14.6 million total subscriptions, including 12.1 million Disney+ subscribers. The rapid growth ofDisney+ in just three years since its launch is a direct result of our strategic decision to invest heavily in creating incredible content and rolling out the service internationally, and we expect our DTC operating losses to narrow going forward and that Disney+ will still achieve profitability in fiscal 2024, assuming we do not see a meaningful shift in the economic climate.
By realigning our costs and realizing the benefits of price increases and our Disney+ ad-supported tier coming December 8, we believe we will be on the path to achieving a profitable streaming business that will drive continued growth and generate shareholder value long into the future. And as we embark on Disney’s second century in 2023, I am filled with optimism that this iconic company’s best days still lie ahead.”
Total segment operating income increased 56%, or $4.4 billion, to $12.1 billion, due to higher operating income at Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, partially offset by lower operating income at Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. Results at Disney Parks, Experiences and Products in the current year reflected the benefit from the comparison to the closures/reduced operating capacity in the prior year as a result of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The decrease at Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution was due to lower operating results at Direct-to-Consumer and Content Sales/ Licensing, partially offset by growth at Linear Networks. The decrease at Direct-to-Consumer was due to higher losses at Disney+ and, to a lesser extent, lower results at Hulu and higher losses at ESPN+.
Lower results at Content Sales/Licensing were due to a decrease in TV/SVOD distribution results, higher film cost impairments and decreases in home entertainment and theatrical distribution results, partially offset by an increase at our stage play business, as productions were generally shut down in the prior year due to COVID-19. Growth at Linear Networks reflected higher domestic Broadcasting and Cable results, partially offset by lower results internationally.
Disney Parks, Experiences and Products
Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products revenues for the quarter increased to $7.4 billion compared to $5.5 billion in the prior-year quarter. Segment operating income increased $0.9 billion to $1.5 billion compared to $0.6 billion in the prior-year quarter. Higher operating results for the quarter reflected increases at our domestic and international parks and experiences businesses and, to a lesser extent, our merchandise licensing business.
Operating income growth at our domestic parks and experiences was due to higher volumes and increased guest spending, partially offset by cost inflation, higher operations support costs and costs for new guest offerings. Higher volumes were due to increases in attendance, cruise ship sailings, which 7 included a benefit from the July 2022 launch of the Disney Wish, and occupied room nights. Cruise ships were operating during the entire current quarter while sailings resumed during the prior-year quarter and operated at reduced capacities. Guest spending growth was due to an increase in average per capita ticket revenue driven by the introduction of Genie+ and Lightning Lane in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.
Improved results at our international parks and resorts were due to growth at Disneyland Paris, partially offset by a decrease at Shanghai Disney Resort. Higher operating results at Disneyland Paris were due to an increase in volumes and higher average ticket prices, partially offset by higher operations support costs. Higher volumes were due to increases in attendance and occupied room nights. The decrease at Shanghai Disney Resort was due to lower average ticket prices driven by a higher mix of annual pass-holder attendees in the current quarter as a result of COVID-19-related travel restrictions.
Growth in our merchandise licensing business was primarily due to higher sales of merchandise based on Mickey and Friends, Encanto and Toy Story.

Here is the latest on Tropical Storm Nicole from the National Weather Service:
NICOLE IS STRENGTHENING AS IT MOVES TOWARD THE NORTHWESTERN BAHAMAS…
At 100 PM EST (1800 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Nicole was about 310 miles (500 km) northeast of the northwestern Bahamas. Nicole is moving toward the west near 9 mph (15 km/h). A west-southwest motion is expected through early Wednesday. A west-northwest motion is forecast to begin on Wednesday night, followed by a turn toward the northwest and north-northwest on Thursday and Thursday night. On the forecast track, the center of Nicole will approach the northwestern Bahamas today and tonight, move near or over those islands on Wednesday, and approach the east coast of Florida within the hurricane warning area Wednesday night. Nicole’s center is then expected to move across central and northern Florida into southern Georgia Thursday and Thursday night.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Strengthening is expected during the next day or so, and Nicole is forecast to a hurricane on Wednesday when it is near the northwestern Bahamas, and remain a hurricane when it approaches the east coast of Florida. Nicole is a large tropical cyclone. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 380 miles (610 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 992 mb (29.29 inches).

New Trailer and Images for Disney+ Original Series Zootopia+
Disney+ has released a new trailer for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ new series “Zootopia+.” All six episodes launch on the streaming service this Wednesday, Nov. 9.
“Zootopia+” heads back to the fast-paced mammal metropolis of Zootopia in a short-form series that dives deeper into the lives of some of the Oscar®-winning feature film’s most intriguing residents, including Fru Fru, the fashion-forward arctic shrew; ZPD dispatcher Clawhauser, the sweet-toothed cheetah; and Flash, the smiling sloth who’s full of surprises. The series is directed by Josie Trinidad (Co-Head of Story, “Zootopia”; Head of Story, “Ralph Breaks the Internet”) and Trent Correy (Director, “Once Upon a Snowman” and “Drop”), and produced by Nathan Curtis (Associate Producer, “Encanto” and “Raya and the Last Dragon”).
1. Hopp on Board – When Judy boards the train from Bunny Burrow to Zootopia to begin her life as the big city’s first bunny cop, Stu and Bonnie’s youngest daughter, Molly, hitches a ride atop the train, forcing the down-to-earth duo out of their comfort zone and into an action-packed rescue mission.

Taking guests back in time to his days as Mr. Small, a new immigrant to Zootopia, he imparts the wisdom he gained then about the importance of friends, family and community.
5. So You Think You Can Prance – ZPD dispatcher Clawhauser persuades his boss, Chief Bogo, to audition for “So You Think You Can Prance.” The stakes are high as the ultimate prize is a dream-come-true opportunity to dance on stage with megastar pop sensation Gazelle.
6. Dinner Rush – As super server Sam urgently tries to finish her restaurant shift to make a once-in-a-lifetime Gazelle concert, Flash and Priscilla show up at the last minute with hopes of a once-in-a-lifetime dinner.
