Major League Baseball is coming back to Walt Disney World Resort in 2023. Disney and the Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to host a portion of the team’s spring training at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
After Hurricane Ian damaged the Rays’ facilities in Port Charlotte, Florida in September, Walt Disney World Resort is looking forward to providing professional-grade facilities and world-famous hospitality to the players and coaches.
“We are thankful for Disney’s willingness and ability to accommodate our unexpected Spring Training needs,” said Rays team president Matt Silverman. “ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex will provide our players and coaches with first-class facilities for their annual ramp-up to the season.”
As part of the agreement, the Rays’ major leaguers and minor leaguers will work out at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex this spring. Major League Spring Training workouts run from February 6 through March 1st with early arrivals reporting on February 6. Pitchers and catchers will report the following week on February 14.
“We are thrilled to be bringing Major League Baseball back to Walt Disney World Resort,” said Faron Kelley, vice president of Disney Sports. “We’re always looking for top tier events, like the Rays’ Spring Training for our guests to enjoy at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.”
ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex has a rich history of hosting professional baseball. The sports complex was the Atlanta Braves spring training home for two decades (1998-2019) and was a host site for the inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic, which features major-league players.
Even the Rays have called ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex home in past years. In 2007 the Rays played three regular-season games at The Stadium, winning all three against the Texas Rangers. A year later, the Rays swept a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, improving their record to 6-0 all-time at Walt Disney World Resort.
Tampa Bay is entering 2023 with high expectations after making it to the playoffs for the last four seasons. This year they will once again be led by pitching ace Shane McClanahan, who was named the starting pitcher for the American League All-Star team in 2022, and shortstop Wander Franco, who is expected to anchor the Tampa Bay offense as the team goes for the AL East division title for the third time in four years.

James Cameron Reacts to Avatar Almost Starring Matt Damon
The history of Hollywood is filled with hypotheticals and what-ifs. Scores of actors turned down famous roles to work on other projects. Avatar director James Cameron recently sat down with BBC Radio 1 to discuss Avatar: The Way of Water. In the interview, Cameron discusses the film’s many technological and cinematic challenges and triumphs. In the middle of the segment, the interviewer turns to Cameron and asks, “When was the last time you had a conversation with Matt Damon?”
At the time Damon didn’t want to leave the Bourne franchise in the lurch and chose instead to stick out his commitment to those films and that character, having turned down perhaps the biggest Hollywood payday of all time. In the interview with BBC, Cameron spoke again of Damon’s choice by saying, “…he’s beating himself up over this and I really think you know Matt you know, you’re one of the biggest movie stars in the world, get over it…”
Cameron hasn’t ruled out working with Damon on Pandora in the near future. The interviewer pressed, “If I crossed my fingers, could we have a Matt Damon cameo, just at the very end…” Cameron replied, …”Must do it, have to do it, so that the world is in equilibrium again, but he doesn’t get 10%, f— that.”
Cameron and Jon Landau have given Matt Damon plenty of opportunity to join the world of Pandora with three more films written. You can however see the latest film, sans Matt Damon as Avatar: The Way of Water is now in theaters worldwide.
The Haunted Mansion in Disneyland Closing for Refurbishment in January
The Haunted Mansion in Disneyland is currently operating as Haunted Mansion Holiday for the holiday season. The ride typically closes in early January to be switched back to the regular Haunted Mansion. This year, however, that won’t be the case.
Haunted Mansion Holiday will remain open for guests to enjoy through January 29, 2023. The attraction will then close for a refurbishment and be returned to the regular version of the ride.
Haunted Mansion Holiday is described as:
“Pumpkin King Jack Skellington has been busy decorating the Haunted Mansion with frightfully festive touches inspired by Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Experience thrilling sights and seasonal surprises created by the citizens of Halloween Town. Sally, Oogie Boogie and other Nightmare nasties will be on hand to wish you ‘Season’s Screamings!'”

Disney Cruise Line Brings Holiday Cheer to Children in The Bahamas
Disney Cruise Line brings holiday cheer to residents of the Ranfurly Homes for Children in the Bahamas. Disney Cruise Line crew members recently visited foster children at the Ranfurly Homes for Children in Nassau, The Bahamas, to help bring holiday cheer. The Ranfurly Homes for Children is a local non-profit foster care organization that provides comprehensive childcare services for displaced children in The Bahamas. Disney Cruise Line crew members spent the day with the children creating holiday ornaments, delivering gifts and surprising the kids with a special visit from Captain Mickey Mouse.
Among the crew members who visited the Ranfurly Homes for Children were LJM Maritime Academy Cadets Christina Adderley, from Eleuthera, and Emily Bain and Summer Lightbourn, from New Providence. In 2019, they were awarded a Disney Cruise Line maritime scholarship, which included two years of study at LJM Maritime Academy in Nassau and one year of service aboard Disney ships. The maritime scholarship program is part of a larger collection of initiatives Disney Cruise Line has implemented to inspire future maritime professionals and support communities across The Bahamas.
“It’s heartwarming to see the impact Disney is making here in my community of Nassau,” said Lightbourn. “The Disney Cruise Line team made so many children smile today. This was an experience I will never forget,” Lightbourn added.
In addition to visiting with the children, Disney Cruise Line also donated $25,000 to the Ranfurly Homes for Children and gifted tablet devices and Bluetooth headphones to each child. “Disney Cruise Line is committed to giving back to the ports we call home,” said Joey Gaskins, Public Affairs Director, Disney Cruise Line. “We hope this donation can help make an impact and, in partnership with the team at the Ranfurly Homes for Children, help provide the kids with tools they need to succeed,” Gaskins added.
“The work of the Ranfurly Homes for Children is great, and the need for support is even greater. The children who live here, they deserve so much love,” said Ingrid Deveaux, Administrator, Ranfurly Homes for Children. “This support from Disney will help us tremendously as we continue to provide care for these incredible children,” added Deveaux.
This special visit to the Ranfurly Homes for Children is a continuation of Disney Cruise Line’s ‘Wishes Set Sail’ campaign, an all-new initiative developed to support various youth activities in key port communities in celebration of the Disney Wish’s inaugural season. The visit is one of many ways the cruise line is spreading holiday cheer this season throughout The Bahamas. Earlier this month, Disney Cruise Line donated Disney plush toys and books to more than 650 students in Abaco, near where Castaway Cay, a Disney destination, is located, as well as in Eleuthera, where Disney Cruise Line is developing a new experience at Lighthouse Point. Crew members also read to the students to share the gift of storytelling and encourage reading. These initiatives further Disney’s commitment to empower Bahamian students to be successful in school and in life.

Tokyo Disney has updated its “Theme Park Usage Agreement” to ban merchandise resellers. Purchasing merchandise with the intent to resell is now listed under the resort’s “Prohibited Acts”.
“[TDR Official Website] We have established the “Theme Park Usage Agreement” that summarizes the rules and precautions for using the park. It will be applied from December 21, 2022 (Wednesday).”
Tokyo Disney Resort’s website lists many prohibited acts. The one we are focusing on is “Purchasing products or souvenirs for the purpose of resale”. Guests who do can be removed from the park or even permanently banned from the property.
This update goes into effect on Wednesday, December 21, 2022.
Merchandise reselling is a big problem at all Disney theme parks. Some parks limit how many of one item each guest can purchase but Tokyo Disney Resort seems to be the first to officially ban the practice.
What do you think of this new policy at Tokyo Disneyland?
