Peter Pan & Wendy is a visually stunning film that is worth a watch
The exploits of Peter Pan and his band of Lost Boys have captivated generations of Disney audiences for generations. Disney’s 1953 animated film Peter Pan, an enduring fan favorite, was based off of characters created by J. M Barrie in the early 1900’s. Myriad fresh takes on the Pan story taking placed over the past 70 years, with the 1991 film Hook arguably being the most memorable. The Disney+ live-action film Peter Pan & Wendy (2023) seeks to reboot this classic tale for a 21st-century audience.

Peter Pan & Wendy, like the original film, follows the adventures of Peter Pan, the mischievous boy who never grows up, and Wendy Darling, a young girl who attempts to cling to her childhood by agreeing to join Peter Pan in Neverland. Together with Tinkerbell and Wendy’s brothers, John and Michael, they embark on a journey filled with excitement, danger, and self-discovery.
Alexander Molony’s portrayal of the courageous and ever-youthful Peter Pan effectively captures the boundless energy and seemingly endless sense of adventure that defines the character. His take on Pan embodies the mischievous spirit and determination that has resulted in Peter Pan becoming a beloved figure for generations.
Ever Anderson shines as the spirited and courageous Wendy Darling, embodying the character’s determination and longing for adventure. Anderson’s performance brings depth and relatability to Wendy as she navigates the tension between a desire to avoid growing up and accepting responsibility with a propensity to watch over and protect her brothers.
Tinkerbell, the iconic fairy and loyal companion of Peter Pan, is brought to life by the talented actress Yara Shahidi. Shahidi’s portrayal of Tinkerbell is nuanced and energetic, and highlights Tinkerbell’s loyalty and her capacity for love and friendship.
One of the highlights of “Peter Pan & Wendy” is its breathtaking visuals. The filmmakers have crafted a vibrant and immersive Neverland, brought to life through stunning cinematography. Newfoundland and Labrador shine as the locations for Neverland, providing the natural beauty and awe-inspiring wonder that bring the fabled land to life.
While “Peter Pan and Wendy” excels in its visual presentation, the films storyline does suffer a bit at times from a sense of imbalance. The character of Hook is deeply explored and well done in the film, but this heavy Hook focus tends to detract from the development of the other main characters (especially Pan) and some of the important supporting characters, such as Alyssa Wapanatâhk’s Tiger Lilly.
Jude Law’s portrayal of Hook is admittedly excellent. He brings a commanding presence and nuanced performance to his portrayal of the infamous villain, transforming Hook into a captivating and multifaceted antagonist that some adults may find themselves relating to by the time the credits start to roll.
Overall, the strong performances of the young leads, Law’s gripping performance as Captain Hook, the mesmerizing visuals, and the timeless magic of Neverland make “Peter Pan and Wendy” a film worth seeing. The film will especially appeal to a younger audience who is less familiar with the classic 1953 film.
