Ohio-Based Artist Adds Movie Characters to Discarded Landscape Paintings. David Sherill of Canton, OH runs Arrowhead Vintage & Handmade Goods shop and had noticed an old landscape painting had been sitting around his shop for quite some time. Looking to get rid of the painting, but not wholeheartedly wanting to toss out the piece of artwork he got the clever idea to add a few Ewok’s from Star Wars into the painting and in a short matter of time was able to sell the painting that previously had been collecting dust in the shop.
Soon after, Sherill realized there was a market for these reworks and began making even more paintings with characters from movies and legends such as: Star Trek, Alien, Lord of the Rings, Godzilla, Star Wars, and more. David even shares that he no longer has to go searching for many of his latest works because clients will bring artwork to him to have commissioned.
“The response was rough very early on,” Sherrill shared with Insider. “Some people were very offended that I was taking a piece of art which, to some person who created it, might’ve been a sacred piece of art to them.” To appease critics, David shared how he tried to capture the essence of the painting before making additions or revisions. “Sometimes I repaint the entire thing on a different canvas, just to really get a taste of that artist, the way they were moving their paints, and the way they assembled their art.”
“I used to knock out the paintings in three or four hours and then it was like, ‘okay, it’s done. I’m going to sell this thing. Now, it almost becomes a labor of love. I tell myself if it looks bad, it’s just not finished yet.”
