The Imagineering Story Is Returning for Season 2 on Disney+

Disney fans are getting another look behind the curtain at Walt Disney Imagineering. During the Horizons: A Carousel of Progress presentation at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, filmmaker Leslie Iwerks joined Walt Disney Imagineering President and Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn to announce that a second season of The Imagineering Story is officially in production for Disney+.

The original six-part series debuted in 2019 and explored the history of Walt Disney Imagineering, from the creation of Disneyland through decades of theme park expansion around the world. Season 2 will turn the camera toward the future, following Imagineers during what Disney is calling one of the most ambitious periods in the history of Disney Experiences. Iwerks has already been documenting projects as they move from early concepts into actual construction, giving viewers a chance to see how some of Disney’s biggest upcoming additions take shape.

The announcement also celebrated the Imagineers who helped build that legacy. Disney Legends Tony Baxter, Wing Chao, Robert Coltrin, Bob Gurr, Joe Rohde, and Kim Irvine joined Vaughn onstage during the presentation. Iwerks has her own deep connection to Disney history as the granddaughter of Disney Legend Ub Iwerks and daughter of Disney Legend Don Iwerks. She told the D23 audience that she was essentially “raised by Imagineers,” making her return to the series a fitting continuation of the story.

Disney says Iwerks has received extensive behind-the-scenes access as dozens of projects move forward around the world. That could make this season especially exciting for theme park fans, with major projects currently taking shape across Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Disney’s international resorts. One interesting wrinkle in Disney’s announcement is the timing. The post initially says the first few episodes will debut on Disney+ “next year,” which would mean 2027, but later states that The Imagineering Story Season 2 debuts in 2028. We will be watching for Disney to clarify that release window.
