Disney Patents New Drone Technology That Can Adjust Theme Park Shows in Real Time
Disney has received a new patent for technology that could make future drone shows at its theme parks even more immersive, responsive, and reliable. The patent covers a “themed aerial vehicle entertainment platform” designed to let drones adjust their performance in real time rather than relying entirely on a fixed, pre-programmed flight plan.

Traditional drone shows follow carefully timed routes, but wind and other outside conditions can cause individual drones to drift slightly out of position. Disney’s newly patented system would allow drones to monitor their locations and timing throughout a performance, then make adjustments on the fly to help keep the entire show synchronized. The system could even switch to an alternate “B show” sequence if conditions make the original performance difficult to complete as planned.
The patent also goes beyond the glowing dots we usually see filling the sky. Disney describes placing themed shells or coverings around the drones so they could appear to be spacecraft, ships, flying characters, or other objects. That opens the door to aerial effects that feel more like actual characters and vehicles soaring over the audience instead of traditional drones simply forming images in the sky.

Disney specifically notes that the technology could be used at theme parks, stadiums, and even aboard cruise ships. There is no guarantee that a patent will become an actual attraction or nighttime spectacular, but the concept offers an interesting look at how Disney could continue blending drones, physical props, lighting, and live show technology in the future.
