“Lilo & Stitch” Smashes Memorial Day Box Office Records
Hollywood is buzzing this Memorial Day weekend as Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” remake has not only met, but gloriously exceeded expectations, fueling the largest Memorial Day holiday in box office history! Families flocked to theaters across the country, propelling the beloved Hawaiian adventure to an astonishing $145.5 million in its opening three days, with an estimated $183 million through the extended Monday holiday. These stellar numbers weren’t just impressive; they’ve set an astonishing new Memorial Day opening weekend record.

The magic of “Lilo & Stitch” wasn’t confined to domestic shores. The film also ignited the international box office, pulling in a staggering $158.7 million for a jaw-dropping global start of $341.7 million. This phenomenal performance is a clear victory for Disney, who invested $100 million in production and an additional $100 million in marketing for the kid-friendly film about a chaotic alien adopted by a young girl and her older sister.

Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, “Lilo & Stitch” is clearly benefiting from a powerful generation-spanning appeal, just two decades after the original 2002 animated classic captivated audiences. The film’s ability to resonate with both nostalgic adults and new young viewers has proven to be a winning formula.

“Lilo & Stitch” now proudly ranks among the top debuts for Disney’s live-action remakes, slotting in just behind 2019’s “The Lion King” ($191 million over three days) and 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” ($174 million over three days). This robust opening marks an encouraging reversal for Disney, especially after the March release of “Snow White” flatlined with a global total of $204 million against a $250 million budget. In a telling comparison, “Lilo & Stitch” earned more in four days than “Snow White” did during its entire theatrical run.

Further cementing its success, “Lilo & Stitch” was enthusiastically embraced by moviegoers, earning a coveted “A” grade on CinemaScore exit polls. “This is a sensational opening,” lauded David A. Gross of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “It’s a crowd-pleaser, and the audience score is outstanding.”
Will you be heading to the theaters this weekend to experience the charm and chaos of “Lilo & Stitch”?!
