Disney’s Animal Kingdom Celebrates a Major Milestone for Lilly the Gorilla

There is a major milestone celebration happening over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and the guest of honor is looking particularly regal! Lilly, one of the beloved western lowland gorillas at the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, has officially turned 16.

Lilly’s journey has been an inspiring one for both guests and the Animals, Science and Environment team. Born on February 19, 2010, to mother Kashata and father Gino, Lilly’s early years were closely watched by experts worldwide. As a baby, she faced developmental challenges that required pioneering new care protocols, including specialized physical therapy disguised as play to help her grow strong and active.

Fast forward to today, and Lilly is a thriving, social member of her troop. Reaching her Sweet 16 is not just a birthday; it’s a testament to the world-class care provided by Disney’s dedicated animal keepers and veterinarians.

To celebrate the big 1-6, the animal care team pulled out all the stops with a birthday bash fit for a jungle queen. The celebration included:

• Custom Birthday “Cake”: In partnership with the Disney Animal Nutrition Center, keepers crafted a multi-tiered “cake” using Lilly’s favorite healthy treats, including frozen fruit, berries, and sweet potatoes.
• Enrichment Surprises: The habitat was decorated with colorful, gorilla-safe enrichment items—like cardboard boxes and streamers—to pique Lilly’s curiosity and encourage natural foraging behaviors.
• A Family Affair: Lilly enjoyed her treats alongside her family troop, providing guests with a heartwarming look at the social bonds that make gorillas so fascinating to watch.
