Universal and Illuminations are Close to a Deal for a Legend of Zelda Movie
The studio and minds behind Univsal’s 1.3 Billion dollar box office behemoth Super Mario movie are trading the mushroom kingdom for Hyrule. Reports have the studio close to a deal with the gaming developer for a future Legend of Zelda film. This animated Zelda film will become the “next big Illumination-Nintendo franchise” as the studio seeks to capitalize on the success of Nintendo’s IP. The Super Mario film was the highest-grossing film of 2023 and is the highest-grossing video game film of all time.
Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto told a Japanese media outlet that Nintendo would surely make future films following the success of Super Mario. Miyamoto helped produce Mario alongside Illumination’s Chris Meledandri. Miyamoto was closely involved in the Super Mario production to ensure the beloved characters were done just right.

The Legend of Zelda is a popular video game franchise created by Nintendo, which began in 1986 with the Nintendo Entertainment System. The games revolve around the adventures of a hero named Link, who embarks on a quest to rescue Princess Zelda and save the fantasy kingdom of Hyrule from various threats, primarily the antagonist known as Ganon or Ganondorf.
