Disney CEO Bob Iger Praises The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Yesterday in the Walt Disney Company Q2 Earnings Call CEO Bob Iger Acknowledged the Success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Highlighting the Revitalized Theater Experience.

Despite being released by a competing studio, Disney joins in celebrating the recent triumph of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Gaming has risen as a popular entertainment medium over the past few decades, prompting Hollywood to venture into film adaptations of various franchises. Notably, an ill-fated live-action attempt at Mario in the late 80s left a lasting impression on Nintendo, discouraging further adaptations. However, after over 30 years, Universal Studios and Illumination Entertainment took on the challenge, delivering a faithful animated Mario film to rectify past mistakes.

While the film received mixed reviews, The Super Mario Bros. has emerged as a resounding success, surpassing a billion dollars at the box office and displaying enduring popularity. It stands as one of the few billion-dollar movies since the pandemic, showcasing audiences’ willingness to return to theaters despite the prevalence of streaming platforms. Disney CEO Bob Iger even championed this during the recent earnings call, commending the film’s triumph and emphasizing the renewed optimism it brings to the movie industry.

During the call, Iger expressed his congratulations to Universal for the tremendous success of Super Mario Bros. He stated, “It certainly proves that people worldwide still have a deep appreciation for theatrical entertainment, giving us a reason to be optimistic about the movie business.”

Bob Iger also announced yesterday that Disney+ Subscription Update: Price Increase Coming to Ad-Free Premium Tier and Disney will launch a combined app for Disney+ and Hulu this year.
