Judge Awards Johnny Depp Permission to Move Forward in $50 Million Defamation Lawsuit Against Ex-Wife Amber Heard. The battle between Johnny Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard rages on as a Virginia judge approved Depp’s motion to carry out a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard and UK-based tabloid, The Sun.

To sum up years worth of legal issues, after Depp and Heard’s divorce, The Sun ran an article claiming Depp to be a ‘wife-beater” and helping Heard’s career by allowing her to claim victimhood due to their tremulous relationship. Heard later went on the write an Op-Ed Article with The Washington Post besmirching Depp’s name and making accusatory claims against the actor further tarnishing his career and causing him to be dropped from several large franchise opportunities including Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts. Now, Depp’s luck seems to be turning as he just won a suit against Heard forcing her to prove donations after their divorce in 2016 and the approval of defamation lawsuit.

Fairfax County Chief Judge Penney Azcarate summed up the reasoning for his approval, sharing: “[Heard] argues she was in privity with The Sun because they both had the same interest in the case. However, for privity to exist, [Heard’s] interest in the case must be so identical with The Sun’s interest such that The Sun’s representation of its interest is also a representation of [Heard’s] legal right,” Azcarate said in the ruling. “The Sun’s interests were based on whether the statements the newspaper published were false. [Heard’s] interests relate to whether the statements she published were false.”
