The 80’s cult classic film Dirty Dancing is getting a sequel and Jennifer Grey will reprise her role as Frances “Baby” Houseman. The news of the sequel and Grey’s return was shared during the Lionsgate segment at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. A video announcement shared during the panel stated: “Jennifer Grey returns to Kellerman’s in the next chapter.” along with footage of the original film.
The original movie starred Jennifer Grey and the late Patrick Swayze, and followed the story of “Baby” (Grey) who is only one listless summer away from the Peace Corps. Hoping to enjoy her youth while it lasts, she’s disappointed when her summer plans deposit her at a sleepy resort in the Catskills with her parents. Her luck turns around, however, when the resort’s dance instructor, Johnny (Swayze), enlists Baby as his new partner, and the two fall in love. Baby’s father forbids her from seeing Johnny, but she’s determined to help him perform the last big dance of the summer.
Chief Executive of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., Jon Feltheimer previously shared, ”It will be exactly the kind of romantic nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history.” Jennifer Grey will also act as an executive producer for the film, with Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) is set to direct the sequel.
Reportedly, the film will take place in the 90’s. No additional casting or story details have been revealed at this time. This is a developing story, so be sure to check back here at Chip and Company for updates and all things entertainment!
