Last month, rumors began circulating that James Gunn was in talks to direct Marvel Studios’ newest Phase 2 film, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. I reported at the time why I was so excited for the possibility of Gunn directing the film, the places it would probably go, and exactly how it would tie into Marvel’s ever growing universe and ‘The Avengers 2’. Well, it looks like those rumors turned out to be true, because Gunn has now officially confirmed he will be writing and directing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. I couldn’t be happier about this news, and it seems he can’t be either. Hit the jump for his full statement.
Gunn released his official statement through his Facebook page:
For a month or so there’s been a lot of Internet speculation about my involvement with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Until now I haven’t said anything, because I’m trying to be less expulsive about this project than I am about the rest of my life. But last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing Guardians of the Galaxy. As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin, Joss, and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and we’re committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful, and unique. I am incredibly excited. I am also incredibly grateful to the fans and the press for all their words of encouragement and support regarding my involvement with this project since the news first leaked. Thanks – you have, honestly, touched and overwhelmed me. And that’s it for now. Other than the occasional photos of my dog and cat here on Facebook, I’ll talk to you again in August 2014 when Guardians is released!
I really can’t wait for this one, and Gunn’s enthusiasm for the project is really evident. Marvel couldn’t have made a better choice to direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, and I for one am excited to see how he handles the property. As I theorized before, I have a feeling that we’ll be seeing a story line that involves the Guardians facing off with Thanos, who cameoed at the end of ‘The Avengers’, and will probably be the villain in ‘Avengers 2’. This will be most likely be the film that sets him up, much like ‘Thor’ did for Loki, and it will also most likely introduce the Infinity Gauntlet, which is one of the most powerful and devastating items in the Marvel universe. Marvel’s phase 2 is looking really sharp, and I can’t wait to see how this all turns out. It’ll be the fourth of possibly five Phase 2 films leading up to ‘The Avengers 2’, including ‘Iron Man 3’, ‘Thor: The Dark World’, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, and the rumored ‘Ant Man’. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is set for release on August 1, 2014.
