Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto is coming to Morimoto Asia Next Week

Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto will be visiting Morimoto Asia on Sunday, August 14th, and Monday, August 15th, during dinner. He’ll be mingling with guests while lending a hand in the kitchen and the sushi bar, and will be available for meet and greet opportunities.

Chef Morimoto will be in town to celebrate two exciting promotions on Morimoto Asia’s culinary team — Chef Yuhi Fujinaga, who has been promoted to Culinary Director for all of Patina Restaurant Group’s Orlando concepts, and Chef Takeshi Ikeuchi, who has been promoted from Executive Sous Chef to serve as the Executive Chef of Morimoto Asia. Chef Fujinaga will continue to oversee Morimoto Asia in his new role, where he will bring his experience in creating unique and innovative dishes and flavors to all Patina concepts across Orlando.

When finding out this news about his visit we reached out to Chef Masaharu Morimoto and were able to ask him a few questions.

Being a world-renowned Iron Chef do any of the recipes you make from the show ever make their way to your restaurants like Morimoto Asia?

The experiences I had in those competitions helped to inspire a new level of creativity with my dishes, and some of the flavors and innovations from those shows have definitely made it to my restaurants. I am very grateful that I got to be on both Iron Chef and Iron Chef America years ago.

What is your favorite food on the menu at Morimoto Asia?

The Morimoto “Buri-Bop” is one of my personal favorite dishes on the menu. It’s a Korean-Style rice bowl with a yellowtail, served in a hot clay pot and finished with egg yolk. I also very much enjoy the Morimoto Peking Duck, it is one of the dishes we are known for and can be seen being prepared in our kitchen each day. The roasted whole duck is served with steamed flour tortillas, apricot sweet chili, hoisin miso, and rice.

Rice can easily shine as the center of a dish, as long as it is of high quality and cooked to perfection. If I could only take three ingredients to a deserted island, it would be rice, soy sauce, and sake to drink.

Do you have a favorite American Food?

My favorite American foods are fresh oysters, a nice prime ribeye steak, and beet salad.

Do you have any tips for ordering and eating sushi?

I do, here are just some of my tips:

  • Just because a certain style of sushi isn’t “authentic” doesn’t mean it’s not worth eating. Sushi in America is different from what you’ll find in Japan. Just like many other cultural elements, food travels from its birthplace to another part of the world. Then it evolves, changes, and eventually sets down.
  • The tradition actually dictates eating sushi with your hands vs. chopsticks, but chopsticks are acceptable.
  • Do not automatically dip your sushi in soy sauce. Taste the fish first as you want to experience the sushi’s flavor first.
  • Do not mix wasabi and soy sauce together into a murky, soup mess. This is a no-no.
  • Never eat sushi with cold rice. It will lose its sweetness, killing the layers of sushi.

Have you ever visited the Disney Theme Parks around the world?

I have, but if I had to choose, I’d still have to say that my favorite ride is at Walt Disney World and its Test Track. It’s great!

What do you have on the horizon for your restaurants?

We are always trying to stay ahead of the latest culinary trends, and introduce seasonal and limited-time offerings for special occasions, such as the holidays. Guests should check out Morimoto Asia’s website and social media to see the latest offerings we’re cooking up.

Special thanks to Chef Masaharu Morimoto for taking a moment to chat with us via email.
