“In the Works” Sequel to ‘TRON: Legacy’ Scrapped by Disney

"In the Works" Sequel to 'TRON: Legacy' Scrapped by Disney

“In the Works” Sequel to ‘TRON: Legacy‘ Scrapped by Disney. You may be thinking, “Wait, TRON: Legacy was supposed to get a sequel? The answer is: Yes! A little known fact by fans of the 2010 hit film was that it was intended to get a sequel that would explore Quorra’s ability to affect the real world as the first digital-human hybrid, at least according to Director Joseph Kosinski.

“The [sequel] was called, ‘TRON: Ascension‘… What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a ‘Stranger in a Strange Land,’ trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.”

Producer Justin Springer is still interested in developing a sequel to the film and is just waiting for the studio to change its mind about shelving the project.

“Look, I will never stop being interested in making a TRON movie,” Springer shared. “I love the opportunity to do it. It’s a title that never really goes away internally. There’s always people around the company who like it a whole lot. And so, we’ll see what happens. It would be great to get the opportunity to do it again. It’s interesting – what I will say is that I think it continues to be relevant both in its ideas and also just the visual iconography of it. I think people are still are interested in it and it still feels contemporary to me. So it’s just about finding the right time, right script, and the right people at the studio saying “yes.” You know, just the usual.”

With the release of Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+ many fans believe the film, or potentially a series, would do well on the streaming platform that is in need of some new content to get fans excited about all over again. Disney has not commented on the potential usage of the streaming service for a Tron sequel, but they have noticeably began to explore releasing previously shelved projects on Disney+ that have been well received by subscribers.

Only time will tell if Disney will relaunch the Tron project and we certainly hope they do! Especially with the new Tron Coaster coming to The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in 2021. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for all things Disney!
