‘Hamilton’ Boosts Disney+ Downloads Over Independence Day Weekend
‘Hamilton,’ the 2020 musical film compiled of a live recording of the 2015 Broadway Musical, was added to the Disney+ library this past Friday, July 3. The release of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s reimagining of the history of America was timed perfectly with Independence Day weekend, boosting Disney+ app downloads 72% from Friday to Sunday.
The musical film was originally planned for theatrical release on October 15, 2021. Though, with the COVID-19 pandemic, it was released much earlier.
According to the Chicago Tribune, over the weekend, the Disney+ app was downloaded 513,323 times globally, including 266,084 times in the U.S. (Analytics Firm Apptopia)
Disney+ stopped offering seven-day free trials in June, gaining more paying customers with the release of ‘Hamilton.’ According to the Chicago Tribune, as of early May, Disney+ had signed up 54.5 million subscribers worldwide just six months after its launch, gaining many more over this weekend.
