When you hear someone went camping at Walt Disney World, you would assume they meant the campgrounds at Disney’s Fort Wilderness. But one Florida man decided to try a different approach for camping at Disney.
Richard McGuire was found camping at Discovery Island while inside Walt Disney World property. Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office were called on Thursday, April 30, 2020. They went to investigate 4301 N. World Drive after Richard was first spotted there. The Orange County deputies spent time looking for him by using a variety of methods. They required the usage of a helicopter and boat in addition to searching on foot.
The deputies finally found him after using a loud speaker to draw him out of hiding. Richard McGuire claims he didn’t hear the deputies at first because he was sleeping inside one of the old buildings on Discovery Island.
Richard McGuire is now facing trespassing charges after being processed by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. He claims he didn’t know Discovery Island was off limits to visitors. He planned to camp there for several days and called Discovery Island a “tropical paradise” in the police report.
According to the police report, Richard McGuire is ordered not to return to any Walt Disney World properties.
