First Look at Ming-Na Wen in 'The Mandalorian' Revealed

First Look at Ming-Na Wen in ‘The Mandalorian‘ Revealed. During a new trailer for the highly anticipated Star Wars series, exclusively streaming on Disney+, we got our first look at Ming-Na Wen’s new character, assassin Fennec Shand.

Wen is best known by Disney fans as the voice of Disney Princess, Mulan, and Agent Melinda May in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Ming-Na recently sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss the new role and what inspired the creation of the character.

“We got our inspiration really from the name. The idea of a fennec fox came to mind,” Wen told Vanity Fair. “She’s tricky, and yet she’s able to maneuver and survive, and be stealthy—so very graceful and agile. I just love that whole image with the name.”

Vanity Fair went on to ask: “Is she the light side or the dark side? Good guy or bad? Or does her allegiance lie somewhere in the middle?”

“Thinking that she’s a mercenary, it can go either way,” Wen said. “I think it remains to be seen.” Wen believes Fennec most closely resembles Han Solo in A New Hope, at least in where she stands in the galaxy. “She is definitely someone who’s loyal to herself,” Wen shared. With her background though, it’s safer to say that Fennec is more willing to work with shady figures within the galaxy, and will more than likely trend to the dark side in her actions. I mean, she is an assassin after all.

“It will evolve, it will change. I mean, I think that’s what’s so wonderful about creating a new character,” Wen said. “I think she has a good sense of humor about it all as well, which is also fun. You can’t really pinpoint which direction she’s going to go.”

It came as an unexpected surprise that Ming-Na would make her Star Wars debut in The Mandalorian, since she was heavily involved with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC. The first casting announcement about Wen came from Disney CEO Bob Iger, during his speech before Ming-Na Wen’s induction in the Disney Legends Awards at the 2019 D23 Expo. It was clear at the time Wen did not expect the announcement, but she managed to play it cool during her acceptance speech and was all smiles the rest of the event.
