Fans Are Enjoying the New ‘Star Wars’ Series Over the Entire Sequel Trilogy. It is a great time to be a Star Wars fan and now that we will be getting even more content at the press of a button in the coming years we can’t help but get even more excited to visit a galaxy far far away. Currently, Disney and Lucasfilm have new titles such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, Rangers of the New Republic, Andor, The Mandalorian Season 3, and more. The big question and debate is “Are these series better than the Star Wars Prequels?” Many fans say: “YES!”
There is no contesting the popularity of The Mandalorian since its initial release on Disney+, garnishing millions of subscribers to the streaming platform who wanted to see new Star Wars stories through a new lens. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have proven to be a dynamite duo for Lucasfilm, with fans clamoring for more each and every week after a new episode is released. I mean, it’s been a year and the world over is collectively still obsessed with Grogu, aka Baby Yoda.
So what makes The Mandalorian such a great series and leaves Star Wars fans both satisfied and yet hungry for even more shows to come? Even further, does the compelling storytelling and slow burn pace cause the series to be arguably better than the latest Star Wars trilogy? Some fans are so upset with the sequel films there are been petitions started to have Disney and Lucasfilm retcon the trilogy and replace it with a new cast and content.
Objectively, many fans believe The Mandalorian “returns Star Wars to its roots” and gives more of the original trilogy cinematic feeling that made fans fall in love a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. The incorporation of beloved, but previously unrepresented as live-action, characters from the animated series has also left fans intrigued and excited for the stories yet to be told. With high praises over Katie Sackhoff and Rosario Dawson’s performances as Bo-Katan Kryze and Ahsoka Tano and with the unexpected return of Temuera Morrison to the franchise, Star Wars fans are eager for more, unlike the response to the new Star Wars trilogy.
Though the new trilogy introduced many new and now loved characters in their own right, the stories where lackluster and for some, paralleled too closely to other characters well established stories, primarily Luke Skywalker and Rey in The Force Awakens. Another chief complaint was the lack of connection and fluidity between the stories featured in the new trilogy and how primary characters were pushed to the back burner story wise when they should have remained front and center. Even Actor John Boyega hasn’t shied away from sharing that he feels Finn was left out of the stories as a character and felt sidetracked in the films when many argue in his favor that Finn should have been a more prominent character alongside Rey in the films. Regardless of how the movies were handled, it’s common knowledge that though they may be entertaining, the new movies left something to be desired for those compelled by the Star Wars stories and that popular source material was wasted by not being used in the films.
This is where The Mandalorian gets it right. There are dozens of books, hundreds of comics, and so many more Star Wars stories to be told. All of them with hundreds of untapped characters or ones that we have barely scratched the surface of in the movies. The Mandalorian tells its own tale with familiar faces now and again while still giving fans a boost of nostalgia for the original stories. The series also allows for deeper exploration into these characters which is one of the many reasons we are so happy that Lucasfilm cancelled their Star Wars film projects and have opted for the series platform instead for the incredible stories to come.
What are your thoughts? Were you disappointed by the new trilogy? Have you found The Mandalorian refreshing? Do you feel the series is better than the latest films? Which new shows are you the most excited to see? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments, but please do so with courtesy in mind for other fans.
