ESPN 101 High School Career Panel Kicks-Off 7th Annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge Presented By Disney on Sept. 1

On Thursday, Sept. 1, hundreds of students from Jones High School will have the opportunity to hear real-world advice directly from sports professionals during the ESPN 101 Career Panel. The 8 a.m. presentation kicks-off several days of events culminating in the 7th annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney that matches-up two Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) football teams at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium Labor Day Weekend.

More than 450 high school juniors and seniors will hear inspiring stories about careers in the sports business and related athletics industry from a former Olympian, other athletes, sports personalities and successful executives.  The panel includes Jay Harris, an ESPN television personality; Lucas Boyce, director of community relations, multicultural insights and government affairs for the Orlando Magic; Obadelle Thompson, a former Olympian and motivational speaker; Patricia Porter, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) director of media relations; and Jamele Hill, columnist and ESPN television personality.

A regular member of the annual ESPN 101 Career Panel, Harris brings more than 14 years of experience in sports broadcasting and radio news to the group of teens, along with strong advice on what it takes to get on the right track and stay there.

“When I was first starting my career, I was never afraid to ask for advice or opportunities,” Harris said recently when sharing some sound advice with student athletes. “Being bold is what will make you stand out from the rest of your peers.”

This year, the 7th annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney, presents Bethune-Cookman Wildcats of the MEAC squaring-off against the Prairie View A&M Mighty Panthers of the SWAC on Sunday, Sept. 4 at noon. Scheduled to be broadcast across the networks of ESPN, this HBCU football game and associated Disney-sponsored events will bring tens of thousands of fans and a positive economic impact to Central Florida.
