Two outside companies that have employees at Disney World will soon raise their minimum hourly wage to $10.00 per hour by 2017.
The union that represents the 400 employees, Unite Here Local 737, has announced the agreement with the Palmas Services and Patina Restaurant Group. Their minimum pay will first increase to $9.00 per hour and then $9.50 the following you and then finally to $10.00 per hour in 2017. Their non tipped employees whose pay is already above minimum will get an increase of $1.50 over the same 3 years.
In case you didn’t know, Palmas Services staffs restaurants in the Mexico pavilion at Epcot and quite a few food spots in the Coronado Springs Resort. Patina Restaurant Group operates two food spots in Italy pavilion at Epcot.
“Palmas and Patina deserve a lot of credit for matching the Disney union wage rates,” union president Jeremy Cruz-Haicken said in an email. “Although they are smaller hospitality companies than Disney, they recognized that matching our union standard was the right thing to do.”
I think this is a step in the right direction. What do you think?
