DreamWorks Need for Speed Movie Review

My “Need for Speed” Movie Media Premiere tickets in hand, we arrived at the AMC Century City Theaters with plenty of time to secure excellent seats in the stadium theatre.   After reviewing the media packet, I was excited to see if the movie lived up to all the hype.   The comparison to the 60s and 70s car movies I grew up watching, including Steve McQueen’s “Bullet” and Gene Hackman’s “The French Connection” had me anxious to see what the movie had to offer.

Lights dimmed and the movie begins in the family-owned garage of Toby Marshall (Aaron Paul) who along with his crew, is working on a muscle car.   Toby is a mechanic who is struggling to keep the garage after the death of his dad.   Toby races muscle cars during his spare time and is considered the best of the best.    But winning his latest race, with a $5000 payoff, does not help Toby much with his financial problems and he is unsure what steps to take to save his business.    Along comes  Ex-NASCAR driver,  Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper), the rich, greedy and arrogant movie bad guy.  Dino and Toby have a long history of competition and jealousy (on Dino’s side).   Dino is now dating Toby’s ex-girlfriend and sister of  Little Pete (Toby’s protege and crew member) but still has a problem with the fact that Toby is a better driver.   Dino offers Toby a chance to make some quick money through the restoration and sale of the world’s fastest Mustang.  Toby accepts in the hopes of saving his garage and along with his crew builds the dream Mustang.    After finalizing the sale of the Mustang for $2.7 million, Toby, Dino and Pete celebrate by racing through town in three Koenigsegg Agera Rs.  The race results in a fatal accident caused by Dino which results in Toby being framed for manslaughter.     After a few years in jail, Toby gets out and is hungry for revenge.   Toby and his crew, manage to borrow the 2.7 million Mustang they had restored and set out on a cross country trip (NY to California) to qualify for the famous De Leon race.  Known as the Super Bowl of underground racing, the De Leon is a high stakes yearly underground race put together by The Monarch (Michael Keaton) a former racer turned billionaire.  He dictates who gets in to The De Leon and when and where it takes place.  Racing and winning this race will allow Toby to get revenge on Dino, along with claiming the prize of millions in race cars.

“Need for Speed” Movie provides edge of your seat excitement and hair raising moments as Toby and the crew, take the audience on an unforgettable driving adventure and ultimate race to the finish line.   The heart stopping driving scenes had me reaching for my imaginary seat belts and grabbing on to the arm rests to keep safe.   Along with some predictable scenes, where Toby and crew escape the cops, and the romance brewing between Toby and Julia (Imogen Potts) there were also hilarious ones too.  One of the funniest was the scene where one of Toby’s crew members, Finn,  quits his office job in the most unusual way, to join the cross country trip.  Toby’s crew, Ramon Rodriguez (Joe) , Rami Malek (Finn), Scott Mescudi (Benny) form a special bond as the Marshall Motors crew mixing humor and white knuckled thrills to the movie.

Don’t miss this action packed movie full of thrills, spills and most of all –   Muscle cars.   “Need for Speed” brings back all the fun and excitement of the chase scenes from the games to life.    The “IT” Mustang, driven by Toby and Julia is based on the 2013 Shelby GT500 designed by the American Car Racer, Carroll Shelby.   The Ford ’69 Gran Torino, “68 Chevy Camero and ’69 Pontiac GTO were also featured as were European cars such as Swedish Koenigsegg Agera R, the Lamborghini Sesto Elemnto, a GTA Spano, a Bugatti Veyron and a McLaren P1 which were all cars from the video games.  Also featured in the movie was a Saleen S7.

WARNING –  “Need for Speed” – may result in a strong NEED to buy a Mustang and drive cross country and will affect your current driving habits resulting in a collection of speeding and reckless driving tickets.

“Need for Speed” stars  Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malek, Scott Mescudi, Dakota Johnson, Harrison Gilbertson and Michael Keaton.  Produced by Patrick O’Brien, John Gatins (Oscar® nominee for “Flight”) and Mark Sourian (“Delivery Man”) and directed by Scott Waugh (“Act of Valor”). The screenplay is by George Gatins (“She’s Out of My League”).
